We Can Do Better

by Kenley Neufeld May 26, 2013

The Ojai City Council will consider a request from Starr Market to revise the Formula Business Ordinance (Section 10.2-1713) and allow a formula business to operate within Ojai’s downtown commercial district. The only purpose for such a revision would be so Starr Market could sell the local grocery store to a…

Background on Formula Business Ordinance

by Kenley Neufeld May 26, 2013

Back in mid-2006 I created a wiki to document a community effort to restrict formula businesses (aka-chains) in Ojai, California. We were ultimately successful on November 27, 2007 with the passage of Ordinance No. 798. A few years later I shut down the wiki because it was requiring too much effort…

Ojai Chamber on Best Western Hummingbird Inn

by Tyler Suchman August 19, 2010

The following is a letter to Ojai Valley Chamber of Commerce members from CEO Scott Eicher. My personal take on this is surprise at an evaluation process where a company billing itself as the World’s Largest Hotel Chain would not have caused our interim city manager to lean towards the…

Interim City Manager Approves Best Western in Ojai

by Kenley Neufeld August 12, 2010

The Hummingbird Inn on East Ojai Ave. has applied and received a sign permit to become a Best Western Hotel. This was been done by the interim City Manager John Baker on August 5, 2010. It was done without any public input or oversight, despite previous discussions on the matter at the Ojai Planning Commission.

New York Times Gives A Nod To Shangri-La

by Robert Peake November 30, 2007

Just a quick note to say that the New York Times casts Ojai in a fairly favorable light in today’s article in their travel section. The article also includes a photo of my boss and his puppy, with some commentary from David on what makes Ojai great (no comment from the…

We Have an Ordinance (No. 798)

by Kenley Neufeld November 27, 2007

It all began in April 2006 with the impending opening of Jersey Mike’s, when many Ojai residents awoke to realize that we didn’t have an ordinance banning chain stores. Twenty months later, effective December 28, 2007, we have an ordinance on the Ojai Municipal Code regulating chain stores. The new…

There’s No Formula That Fits Ojai

by Kenley Neufeld September 16, 2007

I’ve got to admit that when I read the agenda item for the joint Planning Commission/City Council meeting scheduled for Wednesday, I was a little disappointed. The staff recommendation simply reads, “determine the specific purpose of an ordinance regulating formula businesses.”
In the most recent draft submitted by City Staff, the purpose…

Slow Growth, the Environment, Chain Stores, and Economics

by Kenley Neufeld September 16, 2007

Is Bill McKibbon correct when he argues in his new book, Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future, that the world doesn’t have enough natural resources to sustain endless economic growth? He is certainly “challenging the prevailing wisdom that the goal of economies should be unlimited growth.”…

Planning Commission Meeting Tonight

by Kenley Neufeld August 15, 2007

For the past 17 months I, with others in the community, have been working toward limiting the encroachment of chain stores into the City of Ojai. We have written letters to the editor and posted stories to the Ojai Post (see history). We have lobbied the City Council, the City…

chainchainchain……

by Steve Sprinkel August 1, 2007

File it under….Chain Stores…..report by Sprinkel
1010 PM…bumpy draft post from Ojai City Hall…crashing…good meeting, revealing, civil, appears like an ordinance against chain-stores city-wide is a real possibility. Planning Commission members earnest, intelligent, curious, not prejudiced against limiting franchise chain stores.
People need to get those last 200 signatures on the Neufeld…
