A Call to Fine Artists: Art in the Park Now Accepting Exhibitor Applications

Deadline is March 30, 2012

OJAI, CA — Art in the Park has enjoyed a long tradition of displaying high quality art in a lovely setting.  The Ojai Art Center, the hub of artistic expression in the community, is inviting all fine artists to apply for entry in the 35th annual juried fine art show. Accepted categories include; oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, glass, wood, photography, sculpture, ceramics, fine jewelry, and mixed media. Prizes include $500 for the Best of Show, $300 for the Award of Excellence, $200 for the Award of Distinction, and $100 each for three Honorable Mentions. Special High School Student Art Awards are added to the show this year. Application deadline is March 30^th, 2012

Nestled amongst the oaks in beautiful Libbey Park (downtown Ojai, California), a natural setting is created to showcase the rich mixture of works in a variety of mediums. The festival attracts artists and art lovers of all ages from all over California and surrounding states to enjoy fine art, food and music in a relaxed atmosphere.

Back by popular demand:

• Young Patrons Gallery – the tented gallery is devoted exclusively to children and features artwork donated by local artists. Docents help children experience the thrill of selecting their first piece of art in a gallery-like setting.
• Music Venue – fine art goes hand-in-hand with fine music, relax under the oaks while listening to some of the best musicians in the area.
• Hands-on Art Workshops and Demonstrations taught by local artists for both the young and old art lovers.

Some new activities have been added to help celebrate Art in the Park’s 35^th Anniversary:

• High School Student Exhibition Area – Art in the Park provides high school art students the opportunity to interact with the public and sell their art pieces. Students gain great real-life experience creating their displays, marketing their works and making what is often their first (of many!) sale. There will be special juried categories and awards for High School artists.
• Food Lounge – Take in the local flavor by tasting some fun and fancy culinary treats.

Make your plans now to take part in the traditional opening weekend of summer. Enjoy the beautiful, casual surroundings and mingle with patrons from all over the country who visit Ojai on Memorial Day Weekend (May 26^th and 27^th).

On Sun., Jan. 29, the Ojai Film Society will screen The Hedgehog at the Ojai Playhouse, 4:30 pm. Muriel Barbery’s 2006 bestselling novel, The Elegance of the Hedgehog, has inspired a touching story of three lives that intersect for the better. Paloma (Garance Le Guillermic), age 11, lives in a Parisian apartment building with her wealthy parents, her snooty older sister and her sister’s goldfish. For various reasons, none of the above is emotionally available to Paloma. Viewing the goldfish’s life as a metaphor for her own, she decides to commit suicide on her 12th birthday. With 165 days to go, precocious, bratty Paloma captures her world on a camcorder, narrating with acidic commentary.

Renée (Josiane Balasko), age 54, the building’s frumpy reclusive concierge, holes up in her small apartment with her cat Leo. Beneath her dowdy exterior is a real live human being—more accessible than Paloma’s family. Renée reads Tolstoy. Paloma has found someone she can relate to. Mr. Ozu (Togo Izawa), an elegant 60ish Japanese man, moves into the building. He’s a prince–kind, generous, thoughtful. With Mr. Ozu as the catalyst, Paloma and Renée are transformed.

I wrote about this in the OVN recently and then got an update from event organizer Katherine Zackham moments ago that tickets for the dinner portion of the event are almost sold out.

This is a neat, locally formed organization that brings locally grown, healthy, whole foods into school lunch programs and teaches agricultural literacy to our community youth. Your support can help promote healthy foods in schools. Check it out!

The event includes a screening of “The Greatest Game Ever Played,” followed by a Q&A with director Bill Paxton and actor James Paxton. A delicious dinner featuring locally grown produce by local chef Jeri Oshima will take place at the Ojai Womans Club afterward with a live auction featuring lots of exciting items. Including a 1960′s era Trini Lopez collectible guitar.

Tickets will be available for sale at the Ojai Farmer’s Market, and of course you can buy tickets online for Dinner & A Movie ($100) or Movie and Q&A ($20) at www.foodforthoughtojai.org.

Please consider supporting the programs in the gardens, the nutrition education and the work with the school district by buying tickets now and passing along to your friends who may be interested. Although dinner tickets are limited due to venue size, there are plenty of movie tickets still available.

This month’s Spiritual Cinema Night, sponsored by Symphony of Life Spiritual Center and Casa de la Luna Retreat, is on Friday, January 27, and will feature I AM, a documentary by Academy Award-winning director Tom Shadyac, who is better known for a series of hugely successful comedies such as Ace Ventura, Liar, Liar, The Nutty Professor, and Bruce Almighty. 

When a bike accident and brain injury caused Shadyac to question what was meaningful in life, he set off to ask some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers what was wrong with the world and what we could do about it.  I AM is the result.

The film captures Shadyac’s meetings with luminaries from the worlds of science, philosophy, academia, and faith—including David Suzuki, Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Lynne McTaggart, Ray Anderson, John Francis, Coleman Barks, and Marc Ian Barasch.  Shadyac appears on-screen as an irrepressible
“Everyman” who asks tough questions, yet thoroughly enjoys his adventures
towards enlightenment.

A discussion will follow the screening.

Doors open at 6:30 and the movie begins promptly at 7:00 p.m.  Although the event is free, donations are gratefully accepted and go to Casa de la Luna Retreat, whose
state-of-the-art multimedia studio is ideally suited to these and other gatherings.  Casa de la Luna Retreat is located at 710 S. La Luna Ave., in Ojai (between Baldwin Road and W. Lomita Ave.).  There is parking on the property.

Learn about the Inka Medicine Wheel, an ancient formula for healing and transformation, at an introductory talk at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31, at Sacred Space Studio, 410 Bryant Circle, Suite A, Ojai.  The talk will be presented by Tomas Bostrom, who is certified by the Four Winds Society to teach the Medicine Wheel program.

Each direction of the Medicine Wheel focuses on a different healing perspective.  In the South, the Way of the Hero, we shed the past as a snake sheds her skin—all in one piece.  We transform our wounds into sources of healing power.  In the West, the Way of the Peaceful Warrior, we heal our relationships with our ancestors and our
contemporaries.  In the North, the Way of the Sage, we receive the wisdom of the ages through communion with shamans in the spiritual realm.  And in the East, the
Way of the Seer, we learn to dream a new world into being.  Along the way, we receive the ancient rites of passage and initiation into the shaman’s way, becoming full mesa
carriers.

For centuries, Medicine Wheel training was only offered by shamans in Peru.
Then the Four Winds Society brought the training to the United States.  Now the Four Winds Society has certified two instructors to offer the year-long Medicine Wheel training in Ojai.  One is Tomas Bostrom, a graduate of the Light Body School, full mesa carrier in the Laika Lineage, a member of the Four Winds teaching staff and also certified by the Institute of Energy Medicine to teach Dying Consciously: The Greatest Journey.
