At the Valley Vegetarian blog you’ll find my thoughts on vegetarian lifestyle, vegetarian recipes and information on local restaurants, markets and farms that support a vegetarian lifestyle. How do I define vegetarianism? There are lacto-ovo vegetarians who eat eggs and dairy products and lacto vegetarians who eat dairy products but no eggs. There are semi and demi vegetarians that eat less meat than the average person and may eat fish. There are vegans whose diet does not include animal products at all and there are fruitarians who only eat foods that don’t kill the plant and consume mainly raw fruit, nuts and grains. A pescetarian is a vegetarian who also consumes fish.

Which one am I? I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian. My recipes are mainly lacto-ovo but many are vegan and gluten-free. Nothing fancy just good, home-style cooking. See my blog’s vegan recipes on Wednesday. Many of my recipes have been previously published in the Ojai Valley News. Look also for my Ojai Valley Vegetarian Cookbook on Amazon.com.

My hope is that all vegetarian lifestyles will benefit, if only a little, from my blog. Let me know what you think. I look forward to hearing from you! Contact me at the Valley Vegetarian.

San Buenaventura China Alley Memorial – Artist: Qi Dang Songyun Guo (2004)

A few years ago I began a process of documenting large outdoor murals. What are murals? Murals are defined as paintings or other works of art that are found on walls. With this definition in mind I concentrated…

Gruyere Soufflé

by randy January 9, 2012

Soufflés are magic and almost as important…easy to make! The word soufflé is a form of the French verb souffler which means “to blow up” or more loosely “to puff up.”

When Robin and I first met, I made this soufflé for her. That was many moons (and a few decades)…

The Getty Villa – Malibu

The Outer Peristyle

I took our son to LAX on Friday so he could fly home to Sacramento. To avoid the ’405′ I took the PCH home. Along the way I stopped at the Getty Villa in Malibu. This is one of the photos I took at the museum. Although I…

Meatless Alternative for Visiting Vegetarians!

You might very well ask whether vegetarian meatballs is an oxymoron. I would answer yes to that. I would also add that their hearty texture and rich taste are actually preferred over real meatballs by most of my meat-eating friends.

This recipe takes some planning ahead as…

Jalapeños en Escabeche

by randy September 6, 2011

Jalapeños, carrots & onions en escabeche.

Escabeche is typically a Mediterranean cuisine, which generally refers to a dish of poached or fried fish that is marinated in an acidic mixture before serving. In addition to Mediterranean countries, escabeche is common in Salvadoran, Panamanian, Peruvian, Philippine, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Guatemalan and Mexican cuisine.

And although escabeche is generally…
