Profile

I have been living in Ojai since 1977, when I became the Director of Studies at Happy Valley School in the Upper Valley. In 1980 I was invited to be the Director of that school, and served in that capacity until 2004. I am the proud father and step-dad to five children, two of whom are teachers, and my wife, Meredy, is also a teacher and school administrator. I have spent many years as a classroom teacher (particularly in Ethics and Comparative Religions) and as a counselor to students and families. A passion for learning and for how to best teach has animated my adult life and led me to graduate work at Harvard Graduate School of Education, and an MAE in Educational Leadership from Antioch. My upbringing, my experience as Head of School, as well as my years in Ojai have given me a deep appreciation for the culture of community and I join this site in that spirit and interest.

I am an avid fly fisherman, an active reader, a skier, a reasonable cook and a “budding” gardener.

Ghosttown

I am saddened at the pending closing of Local Hero Books in the arcade. I understand that people read less these days, but I would have hoped and expected that Ojai could have supported at least one small retail bookstore. Yet, I admit to being at fault. I mostly shop…

Grey Ojai

by Dennis Rice April 8, 2008

My Mom, 94 next month, moved this past week from her one bedroom apt in T.O to St. Joseph’s Health and Retirement Center on the east end. I am probably a few years older than most of the folks on this post, but I imagine that there are a few…

A Peek at the Future

by Dennis Rice February 25, 2008

I recently attended an EdTech conference in Ohio where I was able to hear Ray Kurzweil speak. Ray is a brilliant fellow. I was introduced to him by one of my students a few years back. He is the author of three interesting books: The Age of Intelligent Machines(1989), The Age…

Exxon Mobil delivered its strongest performance ever last year, earning a record $40.6 billion in net income because of surging oil prices, the company said Friday.
The figure, a 3 percent increase from the previous year, exceeded the company’s own record for…

Farmer and the Cook

Mornings on Pratt Trail
Afternoons lost at Bart’s Books
Farmer and the Cook
A couple of weeks ago, I made an offering in the haiku contest and was particularly pleased to have birthed a haiku that had “Farmer and the Cook” as the last line. Not only did it have exactly the right…

The Schools of Ojai

by Dennis Rice September 25, 2007

When we count our blessings as a community, something that we may take for granted is that we might live in the richest educational environment anywhere in the State. To begin with, we have an above average public school system with a number of campuses which each seem to have…

Eyesores

by Dennis Rice August 27, 2007

Some of the posters have been fondly reminiscing about the OVN when Fred Volz ran it. It was indeed a charming community paper. Besides great photography, regular features on the best local hikes, good gardening techniques and a great thumb on the pulse of local politics, (and some very entertaining…

MY PARENTS WERE ALIENS

by Dennis Rice August 9, 2007

They landed on Ellis Island without an invitation.
Everyone lived together in a boarding house in Detroit and then we all moved together, aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents, to the same building in West LA.
I slept in the bathtub and liked it. I didn’t know anyone that was not Irish or…
