Even though famous and brilliant doctors like Mark Hyman, Dean Ornish, Mehmet Oz, and multitudes of others have been working for years to educate Americans about the amount of pain and disease that is caused by what we eat, most Americans still don’t get it. Additionally, when the possibility of food as a cause of sickness is brought up for the first time by a doctor, many patients turn and run in the opposite direction.
As a doctor who recognizes that food causes, or contributes to at least 90% of all illness in America, and as one who discusses food with every patient, it is a particular pleasure to interact with patients who immediately get the connection. The following quotes are from a patient who has suffered for more than a year, and is ready to get well.
“It will be interesting to make discoveries and learn about foods and how they are adversely affecting me. It can’t be denied - something certainly is.”
“Thinking about foods, what’s in them and so on, has never been something I spent time contemplating and never had knowledge there could be a food that caused my health problems. That is, as long as I wasn’t breaking out in hives, or my tongue wasn’t swelling up and choking me, and I wasn’t going into shock. I’ve always eaten what I liked and what was convenient, excluding Fast Food …”
“Also, I would like to thank you for … offering your wisdom, and knowledge and the certainty you and I can get to the bottom of what ails me. Most of all, thank you for listening. I could tell you understood how distressing, disrupted and overwhelming living is for me …”
“I can’t tell you how many times in the past year, when I’ve had a rare moment of clarity, and realize, all my actions and the thinking behind it, is nothing more than rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.”
This patient is poised for getting well!
Lest you think that I think that patients are THE problem, let me say that most doctors don’t get it either. Most of us rarely teach our patients about foods that cause pain, illness, disability and death. Funny how we bypass the cause and move immediately to the treatment that will cover the symptoms.

Around 40 years ago Dr. Henry Bieler wrote a book called “Food is your Best medicine”. He was the darling of the hip Hollywood crowd and the beginning of looking at food/body differently………He was a really weird little guy with a little dog and a pendulum and he would tell you exactly how much of what you should eat. HE WAS A GENIUS. However it doesn’t take a genius to realize that what you put in your mouth that fuels your body is either going to make you sick, or keep you relatively healthy until genetics or something else kicks in to end your time.
We are so careful with what we put in our cars, our trees, the environment – never really realizing we are the same. What is put in us, makes us function/work. From my perspective Food is your ticket to good/decent health. If you have a particular problem then take a vitamin or herb or two…….but otherwise food really is your best medicine. (It may take a little longer to permanently get rid of an infection or a problem, and it takes some discipline) but in the long run (and we all want the long run) it’s your best bet.
Ps. if it doesn’t make any difference to you and you’d rather eat what you want and not feel “great” all the time, I personally think that’s ok too. Just depends how you want to live your life, and whether that ice cream or french fries are worth it. And sometimes they just are. LOL
