The future of libaries in our town and in our County

by Kenley Neufeld on August 23, 2010

I found this worthy of reposting. Rick Cole, the Ventura City Manager who blogs regularly, writes about libraries. Since this topic is about libraries in Ventura County, it is also applicable for the Ojai Library.

How do we meet the need and demand for libraries in a time when resources have shrunk?…The County Library budget was balanced with a package of deep cuts, including shutting Wright. But the future remains murky. The City of Camarillo has served official notice that they will be withdrawing from the County system by the end of the year.

In 1731, Benjamin Franklin and his friends, sometimes called “the Junto”, operated the Library Company of Philadelphia partly as a means to settle arguments and partly as a means to advance themselves through sharing information. Franklin’s subscription library allowed members to buy “shares” and combined funds were used to buy more books; in return, members could borrow books and use the library. Today, the Library Company continues to exist as a nonprofit, independent research library.
