Time for Ojai to Adopt Meatless Monday

by Suza Francina on June 14, 2010

Today is Meatless Monday, a worldwide movement officially adopted by a growing number of cities.  I hope our mayor and Ojai Valley Green Coalition Board Member, Steve Olsen, reads the President’s Proclamation below and signs a similar Ojai Meatless Monday Proclamation before he leaves office. He’ll sleep better at night knowing he’s  adopted an Initiative that challenges the powerful beef and pork people who shamelessly view living, breathing, feeling animals as “units.”  (Read the HuffingtonPost Link below to find out how the editor of Pork magazine recently blasted the Meatless Monday effort.)

All About Meatless Monday http://www.meatlessmonday.com/ Meatless Monday is a non-profit initiative of The Monday Campaigns, in association with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Our goal is to help reduce meat consumption 15% in order to improve personal health and the health of our planet. We provide the information and recipes you need to start each week with healthy, environmentally friendly meat-free alternatives.

Presidents Wilson, Truman and Roosevelt galvanized the nation with voluntary meatless days during both world wars.

By reviving this American tradition we can help address the challenges we face today. We can improve our health, reduce our carbon footprint and lead the world in the race to mitigate climate change.

Meatless Monday: The Meat People Hit Back

“You know you’re doing something right when you piss off the beef and pork people. The editor of Pork magazine recently decried the Meatless Monday effort on (wait for it) Cattlenetwork.

The pork and beef lobbies have a lot more power and money behind them than environmental organizations and health nonprofits like Meatless Monday, and the fact the editor saw fit to comment shows the plant-based effort has some punch. She’s worried we’re ganging up on her.”

“Meatout Mondays” is an excellent idea and a good start to a necessary practice. Since every single hour, ONE MILLION animals are consumed in this country, if the animals are given a break for just one day, it would save a lot of animal lives (not to mention human and planet health).
