Wow, its coming down. Over 1/2 an inch in the last hour in some areas including Sulphur Mountain, Matilija Canyon and Sisar Peak. Any reports of flooding out there yet? Any photos or videos to share?

Here in downtown Ojai it’s been raining hard for four hours – probably 3 inches. We were looking out the window and talking about what a waste that all this water is piped out to the ocean instead of re-charging the groundwater basin. There is an exhibit at the Ojai Valley Museum right now that shows the Ventura River Watershed, and how we are completely dependant on rainfall for our water. The old paradigm of stormwater engineering was to collect it and pipe it away, as if it were a waste product. The new paradigm is to slow it down, spread it out and sink it in. Drop by the Ojai Museum before Feb 10 to see this and other exhibits in the Go Green Ojai! exhibition.
At times like this it’s hard to remember we live in a desert and we’re in year two of a drought. The 10 inches of rain predicted will help, but will not solve the watershed problems we face.

I heard that Vons meat department is flooded and they are thinking of closing the store until they can get it under control.

Poured over here. Brief break right now. Highly conducive to writing though. Expect some screeds later today.

If we all had rain barrels and collected this rain we wouldn’t have to worry about a water shortage.
