The following Letter to the Editor is my response to an interview with Roland Takayama in the VC Reporter. The interview was part of a larger story about the Ojai Bear, published 11/5/2009.

Re: Bear death prompts formation of animal rights group (News, 11/5)
Thank you for your story on the bear, the Ojai Wildlife League and interview with Roland Takayama, the local head warden of the California Department of Fish and Game.
As someone who witnessed the bear’s death, I would like to point out several conspicuous omissions in Mr. Takayama’s version of the bear incident.

I am still appalled that something that heinous could happen in Ojai. WHO CALLED FISH AND GAME anyway??? Perhaps they should be brought to light as well as everybody that turned that into a circus, with Mr. Takayama. I once observed 2 women praying for the soul of a deer by the road near the Ojai Inn. The deer had been hit by a car. With so much sensitivity Ojai people display, how could they let this happen in their own town?? I had 5 rattlesnakes this year. The FD hauled them off to the local wash and killed one to be used as antivenom. The bear didn’t have a chance in h*ll with the circus atmosphere. My heart will always ache for that beautiful animal and the injustice caused by MAN.Man is truly the most hateful and dispicable of all animals.
