It is now 5:24 pm and the Ojai black bear has been up in a pine on Alisos Street. Thanx to Deb Norton and Chris Nottili I & Brent have had a place to watch and talk to him. The Ojai Police department took a bit of time this morning to close down the street. Now a few blocks are closed around the bear. The Ojai Police do not want to injure the bear. The problem with tranquilizing the bear is that the tranquilizer stays in the bear’s system for a few days. It is bear hunting season so Fish and Game are worried about a hunter eating the tainted meat. So what to do: There has been many suggestions. But none that fish and game feel comfortable with.
[editor's note: multiple updates after the jump...TS]
So we all must visualize the bear going down Alisos to Signal Street up Signal. Right before Grand there is a field off to left. If he turns left there he can get back into an embankment that leads to the dam and to the Pratt trail. Please all visualize him doing this calmly. He must stay on the road until he gets to this area.
Bear Talk, “I am getting scared. I can feel that some of them want to shoot me. I am not sure what to do I understand about what you want me to do, but it is such a long distance and I am confused about roads. I do not like the feel of them on my feet. Why are they so close to the tree? Didn’t you say they would leave me alone? I am so thirsty. If they kill me what will they do with my body? I don’t want any humans to eat it. I got so confused last night because I could not smell the mountains that I came from. I need to eat. I would never eat a dog. I don’t know why they would bring a dog here?”
Bob Kilpatrick brought his dog to the scene earlier in case the bear started to come down the tree. But the dog was never needed.
6:10 Now Fish and Game and Ojai Police talking about which route he should take to the mountains. Joe Evans the Sheriff is all for my idea of sending the bear up signal and up the ravine or up to shelf road. Let’s all continue to hold that image.
Bear talk, “I need to get to the forest soon. I am having a hard time still being up here. My muscles are starting to cramp. How much longer do I need to stay here? Do they trust me?”
To Quote Chris Nottoli on facebook “Bear Watch 09! Breaking News. As the situation worsens, Team Bear Watch 09! member Brent Florence has come up with a stroke of genius, plan C! He’s going to rob a bank to draw the cops away.”
6;43 getting dark. guns are loaded. men standing in a circle in the street near the bear chatting eating apples and discussing what to do. Thriller plays at a party a few houses down. I am worried. I hope they make compassionate decisions.
getting prepared just in case
Bear talk, “It is getting night and if the men will leave I will come down. But if I sense them here I am not sure I am going anywhere. I want them to go away?” I dont know what to tell the bear. I was welcomed earlier in the day for my assistance, but I had to climb over a neighbor’s fence to get here after I left to walk my dog. Thanks to Jay who helped me with a ladder and his kind mom for allowing me through their yard and over their fence. Jack their dog was also friendly.
Brent has been listening it sounds as if they may try and discourage the bear from traveling down the wrong route by hitting him with rubber bullets on the shoulder????
Night has fallen and the bear is pitch black in the tree. The men have dispersed a bit. Ghost busters now blasting from the party.
9:00 pm Brent & I have left the scene. The music from the party stilled blared in the near distance. Roads blocked off with yellow tape. Police officers smiling and saying goodnight. I can honestly say the Ojai Police do not want to hurt this bear. Though there is still a lot of action in Ojai and the bear does not feel safe coming down. I am a bit worried that we left the scene. I hope all bears well.
Bear talk: “I have played what I have to do over and over in my mind. I am just not sure when it is safe to come down. Will they give me a sign? Will they leave? Cars make me nervous. The sounds of their engines and the lights. I am so thirsty. I hope I can even make it. Is there water up that way? I need a big bucket of water.” I wish I could tell the police to leave him a bucket at the bottom of the tree.
I had a dream of the bear falling from the tree and woke up to emails saying that the bear has been tranquilized and then euthanized. I am not surprised. It has been many years that I have heard stories of Fish and Game killing instead of trying to rescue. We live in small valley surrounded by wilderness. It pained me but did not surprise me that no one knew bear behavior. For hours children and people were allowed to frolic and look under the tree. This I thought was extremely dangerous. Although, this bear was docile all wild animals can be unpredictable under stress.
They said they wait for the bear to leave by itself but then they gathered on the street with loaded guns, stern body language, and cars running. Of course he was frightened to come down. He did not have a chance.
They say one of the main problems was that they did not have a holding place for the bear while the tranquilizer wore out of its system. Could not Fish and Game come up with a pen in the backcountry some where?
Their mission statement, “”The Mission of the Department of Fish and Game is to manage California’s diverse fish, wildlife, and plant resources, and the habitats upon which they depend, for their ecological values and for their use and enjoyment by the public.”
I dont think they did a very good job managing this situation. As humans encroach into the wilderness this situation will repeat itself more often. Why doesn’t Fish and Game have an Action action plan? To me it seems so basic. To me it seems like they should have had one implemented for years.
I don’t believe this bear knew how to get back to the back country. I believe he was humanized. I can not say that I am positive he would have made it out on his own. Even though we all visualized him going back, he was thirsty. I couldnt promise him water. I dont know where the streams are running in that direction. I understand why they didn’t want him roaming the neighborhood again. What I don’t understand is their lack of resources and an efficient plan. I don’t believe Fish and Game ever had it in their mind to save this bear. Because if they did, they would made it happened and transported him to holding facility. Or tagged him so hunters would be warned of the tranquilizer in his system.
It is injustice to wildlife everywhere.
More to come when my thoughts are organized.

the bear wants to go back to Black Mountain which is where he came from !!!! he stopped in Libbey Park yesterday for a drink and crossed Ojai Avenue around 8 PM last night and now he wants to GO HOME and i’m on my way to talk to Sgt Joe Evans and the CA DFG (Fish and Game) to convince them that we must assure him safe passage back across Ojai Avenue tonight so he can return from whence he came …..
Laura, I can tell you it was never quiet enough for the bear to come down.
I’ll gather my thoughts and tell you what I saw from the corner of Signal and Aliso…noise and flashing bright lights all evening long…
Wow what a tree hugger. The wildlife and people must make things work together. There is no segregation between the two and nor should there be. I personaly hunt to feed my family and would in a split second shoot that bear if it was out of city limits and in national forest. You people make me sick to think that you would save a animals life rather than a humans or would go to much greater lengths to save an animal. Keep on eatting your vegi’s and smoking your pot hippies…
Thank you Laura,
I just want to cry and cry when I read this.
You said it best:
“They said they wait for the bear to leave by itself but then they gathered on the street with loaded guns, stern body language, and cars running. Of course he was frightened to come down. He did not have a chance.”
“They say one of the main problems was that they did not have a holding place for the bear while the tranquilizer wore out of its system. Could not Fish and Game come up with a pen in the backcountry some where?”
YES THEY COULD HAVE! PLUS THERE ARE OTHER SAFE OPTIONS.
If we the people, the police and Fish & Game, etc., truly valued and honored the bear’s life, the whole thing would have been handled differently.
I cannot get over the fact that the police seemed powerless to quiet the area down and that they themselves and Fish & Game added to the stressful atmosphere.
People’s driving and partying was more important than the bear.
Saturday night plus the pressure of Farmer’s Market so close to the bear on Sunday morning…
The truth is that there are safe places to take a tranquilized bear and we as a city should demand this. By now with the previous killing of the bear in Meiners Oaks a better plan should have been in place.
I realize it’s easy to criticize and I realize that some involved did the best they could… but whoever was in charge should be held accountable and there should be a full investigation of everything that transpired from beginning to the sad, tragic end.
NOTE: Sent this email to our locals…
Dear Ojai Valley Police Department/Ventura County Sheriff’s Department,
I just want to go on record that I am hugely disappointed with your sad mismanagement of the Bear situation… killing him… and not leaving water for him down at the base of the tree. I checked on the situation – from a distance a couple times during the day.

I’m CERT trained, newly have my Ham Radio License – KJ6BYA — and will be participating in the upcoming OK drill, but will be doing so with a heavy heart and not a lot of faith in this local system.
If you can’t save a frightened bear, how well will you cope with a major disaster? I shudder to think.
That was not well done.

Thank you!
Laura, I am having a hard time getting on with my day.
I keep rereading everything you wrote.
“I wish I could tell the police to leave him a bucket at the bottom of the tree.”
I thought the same thing, as I’m sure others did too.
I asked the police many questions about how and where the bear would be relocated…and if they would leave the bear water or bring him near water…
When I tried to get closer to the tranquilized bear to ask m questions drectly o Fish & Game the police man said something about them being in the process of checking the amount of tranquilizer in relation to his size and weight…
The police said that he thought they would probably tie up the bears limbs in case he became conscious while being transported in the back of a truck. I asked if the truck was coverd…I asked why they dd nt use a horse trailer..none of his excuses ad explanations made any sense… The ore I heard the more my heart sank but still I WANTED TO BELIEVE that their intention was to relocate the bear.
Now I believe that there was a point that the police was lying to me because he knew if I knew the truth I would react…
Ok, Suza,
Posted also on the Ojai Valley News blog.

That was a lovely bear. Too bad he had to pay for his mischief. However, I believe the officers were considering the publics safety. None of the critics here have professional experience with “Wild” animals and please…bears don’t think like humans. In a situation like this they are unpredictable. So have your memorial and when you’re done go and protest the hundreds of “Human” killings that take place on a daily bases at abortion clinics.
I’ve heard several people now mention that if a wild animal is seen in their yard they won’t bother calling anyone. It’s a death sentence for the animal. I have a strong feeling that Fish and Game had no intention of getting the bear out of the tree alive.
It is always sad to witness a parting of a wild soul. Perhaps this bear glorious bear is trying to tell us (again) the value of water and our need to protect it for ALL life to continue….
Amazing, I did not realize bears are intelligent enough to carry on a conversation wit humans..
