Ojai Makes Top 3 Best Tennis Towns

Reader Celeste pointed me to good, but unofficial, news that Ojai has made the Top 3 Best Tennis Towns, guaranteeing a prize to "enhance tennis programs" of between $25,000 and $100,000.

In the 10-day Best Tennis Contest online voting contest that ended on Sunday, the other two cities that finished in the top three were Ojai, Calif., and Independence, Kansas. Ten cities were selected for the contest.

UPDATE 9:35AM: It's official!

It's official now, besttennistown.com , thanks to all who voted!

The Open 2009 is scheduled to begin on 8/30, with the Finals 9/11-9/13. No mention on the site about "best Tennis Town" http://www.usopen.org/2009_Schedule/TV_Schedule.aspx

The USTA website says the announcement will happen at the US Open on 9/6 : http://www.usta.com/USTA/Global/Get_Involved/BestTennisTown/Top_three_finalists_named_in_search_for%20Americas_Best_Tennis_Town.aspx

WAHOO! unofficially, of course.

I was soooo excited to read this e-mail from Katrina Rice Schmidt, City of Ojai, that for a moment I forgot everything else!

"Ojai is one of three finalists for USTA's Top Tennis Town, thanks to all of you who voted online for Ojai!

A big thanks goes to Jill Cox and the other volunteers who worked on the application and spread the word.

Making the top three guarantees $25,000 to the City of Ojai for tennis facilities and programs. The winner will be announced at the US Open on September 6.

First place wins $100,000 and second place wins $50,000. The other finalists are Independence, Kansas and Midland, Michigan.

Thanks again!
