Ojai Skate Park: Guest Editorial

by Tyler Suchman on July 16, 2009

The following open letter is from Skater Mom, whose real identity I know. Give it a read, and please contribute to the Skate Park discussion.
Dear School Board Members,
It is hard to express my disappointment and dismay at the group of adults that are supposed to be leading and protecting our children’s education. What kind of example are you setting for these future adults?
I don’t know if the community realizes the political garbage that is going on behind the scenes at the expense of our children. I repeatedly find my jaw dropping aghast at the actions and statements by our (former) Superintendent Tim Baird and various School Board Members. (Minus Paulene Mercado, who is the only School Board Member at the public meeting last month who stated that they had an obligation to the children and the community to fulfill their obligation on the lease.)

1) The Ventura [County] Star broke the news last week that our School Board has filed a complaint trying to stop the building of the new skate park. I find it hard to believe that first of all, you could even contemplate trying to break the lease on the skate park. The original intention for the wooden skate park was that it was TEMPORARY. You, the school district and the city signed the lease document. It references both a temporary and permanent park. The plan has always been to build a permanent skate park in that exact spot. This is not a surprise.
2) Mr. Baird then tried to claim that they have not been included or invited to attend meetings. That is ridiculous. No one has been hiding information from you. The city has a lease that basically says they can do just about anything they want on/in that space until the year 2025. The plans were made public via the newspaper, the internet and many, many City Council meetings. Oh yes, and there is a thermometer in your parking lot that you drive by EVERY DAY that announces that the money has been raised to go ahead with this long standing plan. There have been at least 25 articles and letters in our local OV News discussing the progress and inviting the public to attend City Council meetings. Don’t feign ignorance. Don’t tell the public you have not been included. You sat in skate park committee meetings at City Hall over a year ago. You have received timelines. But most importantly, there is a legal document that you signed that says you are obligated to 16 more years on that lease.
3) I truly took offense when you released false stories, innuendos and shadowed insinuations that led readers to believe that skaters are a degenerate crowd of hoodlums and are responsible for the high number of crimes on the school property. On the contrary, several times over the last few years the Chief(s) of Police have come to City Council meetings to purposely dispel those false impressions. They stated publicly that the number of crimes reported at the skate park is far less than those reported at Libbey Park. In addition, the crimes that have been investigated (such as tagging, urinating in the park, sleeping under the half pipe and drug busts) in almost every case, involved other citizen groups such as gang members, homeless visitors and day laborers.
4) I am not claiming that every kid who skates is an angel. I am only stating that the teenage crimes occurring in Ojai are an issue across the board and could be helped by more safe places to gather and have fun. The skate park is a needed outlet for healthy teens. You should all be flying a flag above that skate park with a proud announcement. Do you realize that Ojai’s senior high school boys, all 5 from YOUR SCHOOL DISTRICT by the way, learned to skate in that dilapidated park and have placed 2nd – two years in a row in Southern California? Ojai has three boys who have qualified for the X-Games in August, which is like the Olympics of extreme sports. These are serious athletes who practice every day. Currently the skate teams have to drive at least 40 minutes to a decent skate park to practice.
5) Here’s the real kicker. The most appalling part of the School Board’s recent behavior is the outright deception to the community in regards to their real reason for not wanting the skate park. It doesn’t seem to be widely known that the School Board has been drawing up plans, putting out to bid and soliciting funding for a large development on the very property they have leased to the city. Did you know that they are planning a 75,000 sq. ft. development with business offices, a three screen movie theatre, a hotel and low income housing for that block? Was that mentioned in any of the letters in the paper or interviews with reporters by our trusted Superintendent? Or more recently by Ms. Taylor when interviewed by the Ventura Star? No. They cited vandalism and teen drug use as their reasons for not wanting the park there. They used our kids as scapegoats for their monetary greed. They tainted innocent kid’s reputations and basically labeled a group of kids with derogatory names to serve their purpose. SCARY!
6) Now they say it is about a drinking fountain and a bathroom. Obviously everyone wants a bathroom and a drinking fountain. That is not a reason to try to stop the skate park. That is a timeline issue.
Well, Skate Ojai has agreed to move the building and funding of the bathroom and the drinking fountain from Phase II of the project to the front lines of Phase I. Consider it DONE.
Now, be honest School Board members. Talk to the community. Go to the next City Council meeting. Show up at the ad hoc committee meetings you have been invited to attend. You were invited and the committee was created for this purpose. Come and play fair.
There is a 4 Way Test that all Rotarians, which some of you are, pledge to abide by.
It asks Rotarians to conduct their business and lives by the following criteria:
1) Is it the TRUTH?
2) Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3) Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS and
4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
I am asking everyone involved in this dilemma, to step back, to reassess our priorities and to work together with integrity, respect for the kids and for the good of all involved. Let us show these future adults how we can work together to resolve issues by communicating, by sharing our goals and working together to accomplish them. Leave the name calling in the school yard.
If the community supports a development on the property, integrate the skate park into it. Make the skate park the central entertainment, like Rockefeller Center where the skate rink is the central focus.
Create a picnic area and extend the bike path through your development. Be creative and be honest. Keep your promises and legal obligations. You were elected to represent our community and our children. Please do so.

Kudos. Good work here Skater Mom. A truly disappointing and sad state of affairs when the only group opposed to doing something for the children of Ojai is the very group that has the most public influence on our children.
I hope it turns around soon and a happy and creative solution is reached. The School Board should be leading this effort to build a skate park.

Dear Skater Mom (whose real identity I know too),
My heart sank when I saw the recent skate park headlines in the Ojai Valley News. Does everyone realize HOW MANY YEARS have gone by since the idea for an Ojai Skate Park first came before the City Council?
I was there and to the best of my recollection it must be about TEN YEARS!
So much time has gone by that now we have another round of citizens wondering why the Skate Park cannot be located at Sarzotti Park. Many no longer remember how the people living near the park PROTESTED!
A centrally located Skate Park in our downtown core makes it much more possible for youngsters to transport themselves car-free and independent. Not only do we need a Skate Park in a central location, we need a PARADIGM SHIFT and set into motion a truly pedestrian friendly plan/street design for downtown Ojai where KIDS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN CARS..where Pedestrians of All Ages, but most especially the very young and the very elderly are King of the Road. Tourists will LOVE Ojai even more when they see young people walking, bicycling and riding their skate boards safely to the skate park.
Skater Mom, I know your patience is being sorely tested…I applaud and admire your fortitude!

Excellent comments and news from Skate Mom about the skate park trials. Ojai desperately needs to serve our teenage population in a positive way. The skate park has the potential to be a place for recreation and sport for teens, adults, and young kids if it can ever be built. Some of the crime concerns should be addressed by the construction of a real skate park with concrete bowls that aren’t possible to hide behind nor crawl under. I am surprised at our school board. I didn’t realize the park was theatened yet again. It’s been how many years that kids have waited for this skate park? And we think we are family and kid friendly? There really are not many community areas/facilities to be shared in Ojai. What is the school board’s response? Let’s create and serve our community.

This park won’t be just for kids. I’m 40 yrs old and have been waiting/dreaming a long time for this park to be built. I intend to be there when(ever) it opens and shred it old school style. I look forward to bringing my kids there and teaching them the ropes. When I saw the OUSD article in the ojai newspaper, my blood started boiling. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. I think its a disgraceful tactic on Mr. Baird’s part. I mean, a drinking fountain and a bathroom??? Give me a break. There are quite a few stores to buy drinks, public bathrooms and water fountains (the arcade and libby) within a few blocks. Our town is not that big.
I would hate to grow up in this town and I’m surprised there’s not more juvi-crime here.. There is absolutely nothing to do here as a kid. Sheesh, give the kids a break and focus more on how to save your public schools from being sub-standard gang infested crap-holes, Mr Baird.
Skate parks keep kids out of trouble, teaches them how to focus, set and achieve goals and that practice makes perfect. They can apply that gained knowledge and experience to the rest of their lives, just as I did.
You, Mr. Baird, are a dweeb. Shame on you.

Update from Dale Summersille, Director of the Parks and Recreation Department as of July 17, 2009:
The following has been accomplished:
-Design Team submitted “90 percent” construction plans to the Community Development Dept. for review. Plans may change depending on the review process.
-The Planning Commission approved the Design Review Permit for the Park at its July 1 meeting; the Ojai Unified School District has appealed the decision to the City Council. The matter is expected to be heard by the City Council at its July 28 meeting.
-The City has received a response from the School District regarding exercising the City’s option for an additional 3,500 sq ft. for the park, which led to…
-The City Council creating an ad-hoc committee to meet with two OUSD board members and staff to discuss concerns expressed in the response letter.

You know what?
Cut your losses and abandon the idea of building at this site. Do you think it is going to get better? How are you ever going to feel welcome there? It doesn’t make sense. Even if it gets legally resolved? Come on, pay attention. The skate park on district property is not wanted. And this is going to further drive home the point to the kids that they are not wanted. You think the kids are unaware of this attitude?
The worst part of saying this is that I cannot offer an alternative.
I am not a parent and not kid oriented. I think the skate park is a fantastic idea and I am appalled at the decade long inaction or mis-actions of the city and the school district. Why is it that Santa Paula and Fillmore can get it together and gushing little Ojai cannot?
My meager support, besides this missive, has been to pay admission at the fund raising events and walk away. Too much energy for me. And I applaud the fine folks that given so much in their endeavor to raise the funds for Ojai Skate Park 2.0. Wow, it’s just incredible!
There is the property right next to the current skate park location where the old welding shop used to be and has been empty and derelict for years. What’s the feasibility of acquiring this as a site? Horrendous, I’m sure, considering the economic climate of the times. And I am sure it’s probably been considered; but the centrality of the location couldn’t be better.
If there are behavior problems, and there is always some, keep the park close to Ojai Avenue like it now is. And, I wouldn’t hesitate to agree that the district is overstating the problem. But close proximity to this main thoroughfare will help keep an eye on the activities there, and provide the opportunity for us geezers to marvel at the agility of these kids and their superior feats of coordination.
Hell, for me just staying on the board is a superior feat. I fell off mine 43 or 44 years ago, hit my head pretty hard and never got back on.
That’s my two cents worth. But the kids of the Ojai deserve much, much more. The committee spearheading the skate park should seriously rethink the advisability of continuing the association with the school district.
