UPDATE 1:41pm: USGS says its a 4.2 earthquake, 4 miles east of Ojai, which puts it near the east end.
UPDATE 1:53PM: see the Google Map of the Incident – it looks like it is on the ridge near Besant Hill School and Ojai Foundation.
UPDATE 2:05PM: The Ojai Police Department was informed by the County Emergency Operations Center that the quake registered 4.8. There are no reports of damage.

Yes we live in Upper Ojai, felt a rolling shake then a very strong jolt like I’ve never felt before, and I’ve lived here for over 50 years.
Earthquake. Probably a 4 or 5, though it was more muscular than the last one for sure, particularly the initial jolt. I thought for a moment that someone hit my house with their car. I’m on Hwy 33, just outside Ojai city limits.
It was an eye-opener, that’s for sure.
First block of south Matilija: a shake/roll, followed by a loud punch. I’m giving it a 4.4, if it originated in this area.

Felt like a sonic boom – sharp crack more than a rolling quake. We live in the East End so we were within a mile or so of the epicenter. Scared the cat and next door dog!

I felt it on West Eucalyptus –a big jolt, a boom, my dog sleeping under my desk jumped up…my friend Sholom felt it at the top of North Signal…

google maps puts center south side of reeves road past Mcnell and right before Mcandrew.
heck yeah! felt like a huge boom, the house rocked like it had been hit. was over before we could get under the table!

I was in my kitchen on Lark Ellen Ave. when the earthquake came rolling through @ about 1.27 PM, Friday, May 8th, 2009. Was aware of what was happening almost immediately. It lasted about 3-4 seconds, max. Apparently it’s true what they say, those mere seconds seem to last a lifetime in situations like this. Thank the Almighty, all’s well (minus our cats having “a moment”). I thought pets/animals are suppose to be great early-warning detectors in the events of natural disasters/etc., haha.

Been doing some research. Looks like the Santa Ana Fault that runs along the creek bed and Reeves Rd. I’ll post a Google Earth file with an overlay of the USGS fault map I used. Fun stuff. This is the link to get a really great .pdf file of all the geological info the USGS has on the Ojai Valley. It’s big. Google Earth .kml to come.
USGS on Google Earth is now showing the epicenter right at Happy Valley school’s campus. This could mean it was the Lion Fault that let go instead of the Santa Ana. Having some trouble getting GE to verify my email so no .kml till tonight
Thanks, Sean–people tend to forget just how many faults, and where they are, are running up and down our Valleys. (My cats felt it before I did!) Life in “Pair-O-Dice”: fires, quakes and floods…..
Shake and Bake weather!
Shake and bake….I live on the lower end of McNell and it felt like it was in my livingroom. The propane guy was here filling up the tank and I thought he had blown up the back end of my barn.
My daughter lives on Gridley, she said there was a boom and there was a “motion” of the house.
I was at the Y. I felt a sharp jolt, then a roll, followed by a loud bang.

I was sitting in the Cajun Cafe in Ventura and it felt like the building was hit by a car or truck. I called home to see if my wife felt it, she did and described it much the same as I felt in Ven..
So Folks–do you have your furniture fastened with flexible fasteners? Do you have seismic cabinet latches? Do you have 7 day or emergency provisions? Do you have a plan?
My brother is a professor emeritus in geology at UCSB. He didn’t feel the quake in SB. Maybe they are too busy with the fire. I heard a loud bang and thought something had fallen.

Was at Thacher about 1.5 miles from epicenter. Felt like an explosion then a good shake for a few seconds. Closest I’ve been to an epicenter but not my first quake experience.
Nice jolt in the Daly Ranch area. It felt like it was directly under my house. The computer sputtered off, then popped back on. The window over my desk got a good rattling. Having taught in Los Angeles during the Northridge Quake, I would suggest that you keep the doors to your childrens’ rooms open at night. We had lots of traumatized children who could not get their bedroom doors open after the quake. Take note of where the power lines are around your house, and try to exit your house to an area that is as distant as possible from them. Make a plan and hope that you never have to use it.
