Ojai Valley Youth Foundation News

Two news items from the OVYF...

1) Pronto, featuring Wilco keyboardist and Ojai resident Mikael Jorgensen, will be performing at a benefit concert for the Ojai Valley Youth Foundation, Friday May 15, 7pm, Women's Center. Opening the show will be Scarnella, featuring Nels Cline, lead guitarist of Wilco and Carla Bozulich, who you may know from Geraldine Fibbers. Nels is a friend of mine and puts on an amazing show.

2) The Ojai Valley Youth Foundation is one of 16 California agencies selected to promote Flex Your Power campaign messages

Generation Communications (Gen Com), a program of the Ojai Valley Youth Foundation, has been selected to participate in a statewide outreach campaign to educate the public about ways to conserve energy, reduce utility bills and protect the environment. The Flex Your Power campaign includes print advertising and community outreach.

“Our organization is pleased to be a part of this important statewide campaign because it benefits the environment by saving energy and it benefits consumers by saving them money on their utility bills,” said Bobbi Balderman, Gen program director. For instance, by replacing older appliances, insulation and light bulbs with energy efficient models, people can reduce utility bills by up to 50 percent. We urge our community to learn more about Flex Your Power and energy saving programs by calling the toll free phone line 1-866-431-FLEX.”

During the coming months, May through September, Gen Com will be conducting a variety of events and activities to raise awareness of energy efficiency programs and products. Included is a “Leave Your Mark” pledge drive where we hope to gather thousands of signatures showing our community’s support of campaign goals. Other outreach activities include a kick-off unveiling of a giant CFL display at the “Y” in the Von’s parking lot on June 15th at 5:30 pm. The display will be used to mark the progress of pledge commitments. The community is invited to attend. Gen Com will also have a booth at the upcoming Music Festival, tables outside of Von’s and Star Market and the Farmer’s Market on some week-ends and boxes at coffee houses throughout the valley where pledges can be made. All those signing the pledges will also be entered to win energy-saving prizes. As part of the project youth interns will do presentations to community groups in the Ojai Valley.

For further information about Generation Communication’s local activities or to schedule a presentation about Flex Your Power, contact Bobbi Balderman at 805 640-9555.

Flex Your Power is funded by California utility ratepayers and administered by the California Investor Owned Utilities under the auspices of the California Public Utilities Commission. For more information about Flex Your Power, visit www.flexyourpower.org.
