Ojai Post: New Partnership with Scripps

by Tyler Suchman on April 1, 2009

I am very pleased to announce that the Post has a new partner in E.W. Scripps, which also owns the VC Star. Scripps is taking a minority stake in the Post, and will be providing much needed resources and some capital infusion, so that we can expand greatly, including highly targeted local and national advertising that will allow us to hire a staff to do local news and investigative reporting. More from the press release below…

OJAI, CA (AP) — Community blog The Ojai Post (www.ojaipost.com) today announced the sale of an equity stake to media publisher E.W. Scripps.

E.W. Scripps has committed significant resources in a cash and stock deal worth more than $1 million. Funds will be used to expand on-site advertising, create a daily print publication, install newspaper racks and acquire shares in a tree farm co-op to hedge against increasing paper costs.

“The Ojai Post is our gateway into a well-educated, upwardly mobile market that we have long coveted,” said Robert Zurunkle, VP Acquisitions for E.W. Scripps. “We also see operational synergy with The Ojai Post’s new sister publication, the Ventura County Star.”

Many noted investigative efforts by the Ojai publication contributed to its valuation and subsequent investment by E.W. Scripps. Ojai Post founder Tyler Suchman will take a position in the interactive team at the new online version of another E.W. Scripps publication, the Rocky Mountain News.

What will this mean in terms of guidelines for authors and comment moderation? Will the print and online versions be mostly separate with different staffs?

All fooling aside, this is a very bad sign. I knew they were going to have to do something about the dollar, but I never expected them to devalue it by 30%! http://tinyurl.com/d4x5ay

Hopefully, the Ojai Post won’t turn into a Ventura County Star…ultra-liberal drivel with a smattering of politically-correct nonsense!
Bye-bye, Ojai Post! It was nice to know you as a real paper!

Bravo, Tyler — totally fell for it until the “upwardly mobile market” line and then had a moment of, huh?
(I’m going to choose to believe my excuse was that I didn’t read it until Friday the 3rd and w/my short term memory, April Fools Day had lonnnnng since disappeared in the outer reaches of my brain) >;-)…
…but I was formulating the “way to go, Tyler!” post in my head… :-)
Excellent!
Best,
Leigh
