FEMA / Flood Plain Re-Mapping Meeting

by Tyler Suchman on March 18, 2009

from MAC member Jerry Kaplan…save the date if you’re interested.
I have just been officially informed by representatives of FEMA and Ventura County that they are planning a joint Community-Wide meeting in Ojai the evening of April 7, 2009… Supervisor Steve Bennett made a preliminary announcement of this meeting at the MAC (Municipal Advisory Council) meeting on March 16th.

This is the first of several such meetings which will take place at several areas around the County over the next several months. These presentations are being sponsored by the Ventura County Board of Supervisors as part of their Community Outreach Program
This meeting will inform the Community on the status of the Current Flood Plain Re-Mapping process in the Ojai Valley They advise that this meeting will not only provide the residents of the Ojai Valley with the opportunity of hearing from the “Hands-on Managers” of this process, but the residents will also have the opportunity to ask questions and, hopefully, find out how to determine the status of their property, the basis for adjustments and the best methods for requesting adjustments.
As the result of a long teleconference call with FEMA and the County earlier today, I can happily report that they were very responsive to the concerns expressed to me by many Ojai Valley residents who have property in Flood Plain areas. They also advised me that there is a new initiative being developed by the Board of Supervisors which, hopefully, will reduce the cost of mortgage required Flood Plain insurance. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
As soon as the Community Meeting place and time are finalized we will be informed. Meanwhile, I was asked to do all I can to inform the community of this meeting ASAP so that interested Flood Plain property owners can reserve the evening of April 7th for this meeting. Your help in this process is requested.
I understand that Supervisor Steve Bennett, who is the current chairperson of the Board of Supervisors, is to be thanked for arranging for Ojai to be the location of the first of these series of Community outreach programs on this subject.

Can you provide a link to current flood plain maps?

This is a really upsetting state of affairs, especially in the East End, where most properties are mysteriously classified as being in the 100 year flood plain, even when many are uphill from the water. We’ve had record rains at least 2 of the 14 years I’ve lived here, and there has been no flooding on or near our property to my knowledge. Yet we’ve been asked to pay exhorbitant insurance prices to insure against flooding.
Please, if you’re reading this, attend the meeting and find out all you can about this. I’ll be there.
