Mary always thought she would be a painter or sculpture, but instead followed in her mother’s footsteps and became a chef extraordinaire. She lived in France for a while, studying the art of French cuisine at Le Cordon Bleu and then came back to Los Angeles to work as a head chef at a well-known Hollywood Bistro. At one point Mary became ill from living a “rich French” life and discovered the medicinal properties of food. She became one of those rare vegan chefs that could take an ordinary cashew and turn it into a tasty raw cheese spread: Or grind fresh almonds to magical produce the most delicious almond ice cream you’ve ever tasted.
Mary opened her first Organic Vegan Bistro here in Ventura, offering a “naturally delicious dining experience with consciously prepared food to nurture your mind, body and spirit”. Her menu of organic and natural ingredience include cooked and raw food entrees such as: Yellow Curry Stew, Vegan Shrimp Pad Thai (my personal favorite), Secret Sushi Roll Raw, and a myriad of other delicious combinations of fresh vegetables, raw vegan cheeses, a Secret Burger to “give up meat for” and desserts that will leave you richly satisfied, i.e. Organic 4 Layer Cake de jour, Raw Pecan Pie a la mode and much more. Mary also has a selection of organic fine wine.
This lovely little bistro feels like a delicate posh homey heaven in the middle of downtown Ventura. The prices are reasonable and the environment is cozy. Mary, her husband Hugo, and her friendly staff, make sure that everyone feels at home, and has a memorable dining experience. I’m so grateful for this wonderful first rate Vegan Bistro, 10 minutes from Ojai. Every time I eat there, I swear I’m going Vegan because you feel so light and healthy after a beautiful satisfying meal.
Be sure to make a reservation because it fills up fast, especially on the weekends. Mary is also offering a spectacular vegan Thanksgiving Lunch with exceptional trimmings. Call Tue – Wed. 1-4 p.m and Thurs. Friday & Saturday 11-9:30 p.m. 805-641-3663, 100 S. Fir St, Ventura 93001. You won’t regret it, even if you’re a meat enthusiast.

I LOVE MSG. The restaurant.Been there for lunch only. Try the Mother’s Milk smoothie and faux chicken sandwich, oh and the ravioli. Incredible. Mary and the staff are wonderful, attentive and “into” what their doing.
What a beautiful review! All my friends are forever telling me I must go eat at “Mary’s Secret Garden,”…now I will!
Dvorah, I recommend you send this review to Felicia Tomasko, editor of LA Yoga. Thanks! Namaste.
Now it’s no longer “Secret”.
Alas.
I still know where the remaining “Secrets” are, but you’ll have to seduce me.
Yum, I totally want to go there now!
Yum is right! Thanks Dvorah!
And when did El return? Maybe now you two can start up where you left off (wink, wink). I see lots of “secret” destinations in your future…
Wow! this place is AWESOME! I won’t make an suggestions as to what you should order because EVERYTHING is so good! if you live anywhere in southern cali, you must stop by! Ohhh Maaaarrry!! what great food! Ohhh!!
Mary’s has amazing and delicious food. One of my picky food friends says Mary’s has the best soups in Ventura or SB county !
Her middle eastern platter is delicious and Mary uses our Nutiva hemp seeds in the tabouli.
Try the smoothies – I love the Cherry Cacoa and the raw coconut ice cream is to die for.
Way to go Mary !
Thanks for the tip. What’s the address?
100 S. Fir St. Ventura, 93001 Bon Appetit’!
LTOR-
El never really left.
Been lurking and just generally dismayed at the head-tripping, ego-tripping, irrelevance and insanity of much of the posting here.
Can’t remember the last time I picked up anything useful here, although MSG looks like a winner.
Dvorahji and I have looked squarely into each other, recognized a universal common denominator that could only get us into trouble.
Discretion victoried over valor and now we simply exchange furtive glances at some of your finer Ojai establishments.
Look for us- there is an intense glow when we are in each other’s presence.
Dennis-
How could you ever say/think that?
I (we) hang on to your every word, every thought.
YOU are our savior.
Your incredibly keen insights into the seamy underbelly give us hope that SOMEONE sees it ALL ever so clearly.
Don’t EVER let us down.
YOU are OUR rock, our anchor, our highest symbol (YES a SYMBOL) of goodness, of light, of the womby womam web in which we would LIKE to be.
YOU are IN.
In like the skin on my Bob Dylan leopard pillbox.
Dennis – I’ve deleted all your meanderings – write your own book of “spiritual insights” & post on someone else’s entry…this entry is a restaurant review…
I love eating there!!! I go as often as I can!
