Betsy Clapp - A New Face on City Council

Betsy Clapp

Let me be the first on the Ojai Post to congratulate Betsy Clapp for her stunning victory in the Ojai City Council race. In this five-way race for two slots, Betsy took the lead position with 28% of votes. From the very first day I heard Betsy talk and announce her candidacy, I have supported her campaign. She has worked diligently over the last several months to meet the community and to understand the issues and concerns. I am certain she will do an excellent job and I look forward to her leadership on the Ojai City Council in the next four years. If you would like to read more about Betsy and her positions, visit her web site Betsy4Council.

Congratulations, Betsy, and best wishes for your next four years on the Ojai City Council. I enjoyed working with you on the campaign trail!

Congratulations, Betsy. I am so happy there's finally been "hope and change" added to the council.

Way to go, Betsy! Congratulations! I'm sure you will serve Ojai well.

I had the great pleasure of calling Betsy at 2 am and telling her that she was miles ahead... and that she won!

Congratulations, Betsy! And good luck with all your objectives for the next for years!

Congrats, Betsy!

Congratulations Betsy!

Congratulations, Betsy, on your victory.

We all look forward to working with you and the Council over the next few years.

A note from the City Clerk:

This is just a note to clarify. If you have been monitoring election results via the County Election's website and have noticed the "100%" total, that means 100% of the ballots counted, not ballots cast.

The number of registered voters within the City of Ojai: 5,089

Approximately 2,324 ballots have been counted. That’s only about 46% of the registered voters. I expect the voter turnout to be at least 72%.

This is too unbelievable for words. Since when does 100% mean 100% of votes counted, and not votes cast?????????

Whatever idiot clerk said those were 100% of the votes should lose their job. This is a case of GROSS NEGLIGENCE.

(On the positive side.... the results are still not in!!! ... what a bittersweet state of confusion this is!!!)

Wow, Betsy great victory. Go got it girl!!

It's not the Ojai City Clerk's fault...let's just blame it on the County Computers...saying 100% leads to misleading assumptions...

I believe the 100% is of those cast at the polls. It does not include the absentee ballots. I did the math and this could mean up to 1,200 more ballots remaining (if 70% vote and they all select a council slot).

This could be good news for Measure P because it is trailing by just a thread - needs 67% to pass.

Suza,

I didn't mean to blame the Ojai City clerk.... I assume it is some Ventura County Clerk, since that is where the 100% figure came from....

Kenley,

You may be right, but the note from the Ojai City Clerk does not distinguish between ballots cast at the polls vs. absentee ballots..... It distinguishes between ballots counted and ballots cast. Now, that may turn out to be the same distinction, but if so, why didn't she say so? And if so, why haven't any of the absentee ballots been counted yet???

The "absentee" caveat is my own and could be incorrect. However, based on past experience the absentee ballots sometimes take a week or two to get counted.

Check out the same commentary from the 2006 Ojai City Council Election Update post right here on the Ojai Post.

Wow.... that is a great link Kenley posted above, for anyone interested (and confused!) about the outcome of this city council election....

Talk about deja vu all over again!!

I called the Ventura County Elections Department and found out the County has 76,000 vote-by-mail ballots and 10,000 provisional ballots left to count. This represents about 35% of the 243,000 regular ballots cast at precincts county-wide.

If the same proportion holds for Ojai ballots, it would indicate there are some 1627 votes for City Council left to count, in addition to the 4648 votes already counted.

The lady said it would not be until late tomorrow that updated vote counts become available.

As things stand at the moment, Sue Horgan leads Suza by only 88 votes for the second seat on the Council, so this thing is still up for grabs!

Thank you for calling the Ventura County Elections Department...

note to Tyler:

Glad you posted that there are "more votes" out there.... in fact there are MANY more votes out there.... about half again as many as the number already cast....

(i.e., estimated 2700 still to count in addition to the 4600 already counted)

I want to thank everyone for your support during my campaign and give a huge THANK YOU for your votes. I will work hard on your behalf to help Ojai become the economically strong model sustainable community it needs to be. Wish me luck.

Thanks,
Betsy Clapp

So, who is the other elected council member, Suza OR sue,?

Still pending, Sue has a lead over Suza. The last update on 11/06 showed very little movement in percentages.

Please someone relay the latest breaking count of absentee and provisional and their likelyhood. One third yet to be counted votes out of a total of over 5,000 votes cast yet raises more than a little suspician and is weirdly simular to 2006 council vote.

Congratulations, Bestsy!

as president-elect Obama (!) has reminded us over and over again during the past several months, it's important that we treat everyone with dignity and respect, even if / when we don't agree with them > thank-you Betsy for being a shining example of what it means to exemplify this philosophy !!!
