McCain won again ! That two in a row !
Comment #1 Posted by: BC | October 7, 2008 07:42 PM
Well, contrary to Brian's "attempt" to shape reality. Clearly Obama won the debate. With the failures in Iraq, Afghanistan and the ongoing economic collapse and the destruction of the Friedman economics of the last thirty years, the Republicans have become incoherent. McCain was the embodiment of that incoherence tonight.

Vicki/Paula/Dave is the same person that I deleted comments from a few days ago - I have matching IP addresses again. I'm removing comments from this schizophrenic person who continues to post with multiple identities, and squarely under the "obscene, abusive" guidelines.
Again, I give LOTS of leeway to our authors and commenters, but I think this person is clearly over the line.
Comment #3 Posted by: Tyler | October 7, 2008 08:24 PM
actually it was Vicki/Paula/Dave/Mark on this thread.
Now to address Brian's spin - nice try, buddy.
CNN, MoE 4%:
Who did the best job in the debate?
McCain (R) 30
Obama (D) 54
Opinion of Barack Obama (before debate)
Favorable: 64 (60)
Unfavorable: 34 (38)
(+8 net favorability rating)
Opinion of John McCain (before debate)
Favorable: 51 (51)
Unfavorable: 46 (46)
(no change in net favorability rating)

Tyler,
I think Vicki/Paula/Dave/Mark is a Republican troll trying to attribute the words he/she was writing to the left.
Comment #5 Posted by: spk | October 7, 2008 08:37 PM
Watching old John McCain is getting to be a little bit sad. He used to have a small fabric of honor and virtue that he held very dear, but he sold it to the dark side in his desperation to get elected. He is starting to seem like King Lear -- an old man, howling against the winds of change.
There is nothing left to this campaign but the sound and the fury. The outcome can no longer be in doubt.
Comment #6 Posted by: david | October 7, 2008 08:49 PM
A little more from that CNN snap poll...
Who expressed his views more clearly in the debate?
Obama 60
McCain 30
Who spent more time attacking his opponent?
Obama 17
McCain 63
Who seemed to be the stronger leader?
Obama 54
McCain 43
Who was most likeable?
Obama 65
McCain 28
Comment #7 Posted by: Tyler | October 7, 2008 08:54 PM
BC, and Vicki/Paula/Dave/Mark may be trolls. And the snap polls may be heavily tilted to Obama. They should be. But as an Obama supporter, I can say there is some work to do with our candidate.
Iran is a threat?
No, its not. Iran is developing a bomb because they have to - they are under threat and surrounded by unstable nuclear powers. Different policy could bring different results over there.
Russia is our enemy?
No, its not. Eight years of misguided George Bush policies have sought to encircle Russia with hostile military force, forcing the Russians to act.
Georgia needs billions in aid from us?
No, Georgia needs to be cut off from corrupt Bushian aid, and encourage to elect its own, non-expansive, non-corrupt democratic leadership.
The Iraqi "surge" is working?
No, its not - or at least, if that is what constitutes victory, let's try defeat, it has to be better than what we've got.
Afghanistan needs more U.S. troops?
No, it needs a multilateral U.N. force and a true effort at stabilization supported by serious reconstruction. The Soviets got ten years in Afghanistan because they spent alot building parts of the country. Bombing alone? We'll suffer defeat there in a much shorter time than the Soviets did.
We'll swoop to Israel's defense if Iran attacks it without going to the U.N. first?
Morons. Iran has not attacked anyone in centuries, and is not about to attack Israel. Iran has never threatened to do so, and never would. The question is based on the kinds of misguided assumptions that have brought us eight years of disastrous foreign policy, and would bring us at least four more of the same with McCain.
We need to focus on energy, health care and keeping people in their homes to help this economy?
Yeah. Sure. Whatever. The market dropped another 500 points today. Massive layoffs are coming. The dollar is plummeting. We are buried in debt. It is all a result of these misguided Bush-McCain policies. I heard one sentence saying that. Mr. Obama, prove to me you get it: Repeat, over and over - do you want a collapsing stock market, massive Wall Street bailouts, decimated retirement, plummeting home values, massive layoffs? Do you like what is happening right now? Then vote for Mr. McCain over there. That's what he brought us, small scale, as a member of the Keating 5, that's what he brought us right now as a Republican senator voting with George W. Bush for eight years, and that's what he promises to bring us big time as President.
That's how stark it is.
Obama didn't lose the debate. But he lost alot of opportunity to get us all fired up.
Please don't take that to be an endorsement of an original member of the Keating 5 as a Presidential candidate, especially in a week when the stock market has lost over 10% of its value, credit is frozen, the dollar plummeted, and 6% of GDP has been devoted to bail out the modern Charles Keatings, all as a result of McCain's lifelong policies of Reaganomics and deregulation coming home to roost. McCain's candidacy is not just ridiculous but ugly. It is not worth words. Nobody sane is voting McCain. Which is all the more reason why it is important to keep on Obama to be the President we know he can be, and push back when it is important.
Although, once more: It would not have been a bad thing for Obama to call McCain on his lies. Look at the record? McCain supports fat cats over the middle class, and always has. Letting McCain get away with promising he'll fix the abuses on Wall Street ... that is just ridiculous.
In case anyone isn't getting my sentiment, yes, I am disappointed with what I saw this evening.

Really now, I think who you are supporting and what your views are may have a little to do with who you thought won.
Comment #9 Posted by: BC | October 7, 2008 09:53 PM
#8 He's winning.

Brian,
Despite what the Bush Administration has believed for the last 8 years, reality is not subjective.
Comment #11 Posted by: spk | October 7, 2008 10:04 PM
The Democrats could run a refrigerator for President, and if you had two brain cells to rub together you'd have to sigh and vote for the refrigerator rather than McCain.

After maning the phones down at Ventura republican HQ's ( first time for me) I started thinking about the local race with Tony Strickland. I've heard some of his ads and I noticed he doesn't really say anything about drilling or nuclear power so I gave the office a call and asked what's up with that. I got a call back from Tony and he assured me he is for all types of energy. I told him when I hear it on radio I'll believe it. He mentioned tidal power and that was a red flag for me because I happen to know that that tecnology is very inefficant and not worth doing, so I called him on it and he tried to sell me on it. I'll have to straighten him out on that one !
Comment #13 Posted by: BC | October 7, 2008 10:19 PM
I can't wait for "THAT ONE" to take office!
(And for the other one and his hate-mongering Stepford Candidate sidekick to Go AWAY!)

If anyone is as disgusted as I am about the police officer in Florida using Obama's middle name to incite hatred, please call the Lee County Sheriff's office to tell him your thoughts. 239-477-1000. It rings for quite a while, but finally some poor woman picks up and will send you to a voice mail set up apparently to deal with all the calls.
I am also looking into contacting the mayor's office.
Please take the time to call and send a message that the majority of this country find this type of behaviour shameful ESPECIALLY for someone who is supposed to be upholding the law and maintaining peace.

WTF Tyler! This is the only open thread on the front page I could find so I'm posting this comment here.
Four trucks threads without comments being enabled!? In a row?! I understand that Howard brooks no dissent with regard to his decidedly NIMBY crusade, but four articles in a row dealing with exactly the same subject and without any allowable interaction from the rest of the post readers is a bit much, don't you think.
I'm aware that a few people think of politics as a dreary, boring subject, but I would argue that at this particular point in history there are few subjects of grater import. Recently you expressed the opinion that there was too much politics on the front page of the post and declined a guest editorial from a friend of mine who wished to explore the inherent racism of many, if not most, of the McCain voters. I understood this decision, and chalked it up to a wish to inject a bit more local happenings, etc.
I recognize that Howard's Trucks issue has a political dimensions, but surly one thread is enough. Especially when there can be no room for any exploration of those dimensions or even opinions of any kind.

Howard is the Karl Rove of Ojai...
Comment #17 Posted by: Howard's aunt | October 12, 2008 11:24 AM
Howard, I respect your decision not to allow comments, but hijacking the ENTIRE front page of the Ojai Post with FOUR of the same stories is taking it too far.
Comment #18 Posted by: Lisa Snider | October 12, 2008 11:40 AM
Lisa,
"Stop the Trucks" does not make the news nor control its timing, we just report it to a very large public audience through both emails and the Ojai Post whenever it becomes available.
The issues thrust upon the citizens of the Ojai Valley and the City Council this week are, as you are well aware since you've worked in the field of community re-development, critical to very survival of our community as we know it.
To not post in favor of some faux spiritual/racist scree from M.T. or some of J.D.'s pseudo-fascist blatherings would be the real dis-service to Ojai...
Or to not post in order to avoid somebody else's self-promotion of their latest project would also be a dis-service...
"Stop the Trucks" is a dedicated hard-working group of people who not only have devoted an incredible amount of time, money and energy to this cause selflessly on behalf of our community but also work full time jobs, raise families and take care of our homes. Most "Stop the Trucks" members also devote time to many other causes, political movements and organizations in and around Ojai. They tend to be among the most actively engaged people in the Valley.
If this offends you, then I am sorry... for you.
If on the other hand you grasp the significance of what "Stop the Trucks" is attempting to do, then maybe you will join us and support this effort with time, dollars and energy.
Thank you,
hjs

Howard,
Speaking of blathering.... Why don't you allow readers to respond to your posts?
Comment #21 Posted by: howies minion | October 12, 2008 03:17 PM
I don't disagree at all with what you are doing (nor do your efforts offend me) and, yes, it's a nice change of pace on these pages from the others you mention, but one carefully-worded post on the subject now and then would certainly enhance the message.
Comment #22 Posted by: LS | October 12, 2008 03:23 PM
Howard, Why don't you get a life instead of sneaking around before daylight so you can get "criminal" pictures of a trucker trying to make a damm living. What is this Nazi German (goodwin alert
!) where nieghbor spys on nieghbor ! I think your stop the trucks crusade sucks, it's unamerican, it's anti-business, and it's anti-trucker.
Comment #23 Posted by: BC | October 12, 2008 03:56 PM
Wow Howard, you have done some serious damage to the cause you so proudly represent. Your current barrage of posts can be likened to a convoy of gravel trucks parading down Ojai Av. Your disdain for your fellow authors and your disregard for the reader has become glaringly apparent. How sadly ironic that you have begun to copy and mimic in your actions and your words the terrible trucks that you rail against. Obviously, you have lost the plot, Howard the Truck. Here's hoping you have the integrity and strength to find it again.
Comment #24 Posted by: Stop the Howard | October 12, 2008 04:19 PM
What is this Nazi German ...where nieghbor spys on nieghbor !
Surely Brian, you MUST see the irony in your statement! This, coming from a Republican Bush supporter, is almost intolerable in light of the latest news regarding governmental spying!!! Or are they not reporting on Faux News about Bush's wiretapping being used to salaciously listen to phone calls from our overworked service men and women innocently calling home to speak (often itimately) to their spouses and partners.
Glass houses are a bitch, don't you think?!?! If in doubt, just ask the Fallen Angel of the GOP! She'll tell ya! You betcha!
