on-demand water heaters are a joke.
BC- how so?
In theory they seem like a good idea. They have a flow device mechanism that senses when water at the tap is turned on. Once water is flowing the burner kicks on and hot water is instantaniously heated and delivered to the tap. Then you have to wait at the tap for the hot water to eventually get there, which you have to do also with a regular water heater. The only difference between the two is that with a standard water heater you have a 40 gallon tank sitting with hot water standing by and the on demand water heater people will tell you that you are wasting energy by maintaining that 40 gallons of hot water, but in reality those water heaters are very well insulated and do not lose an appreciable amount of heat. The instantaneous (or on demand) water heaters will not kick on unless you have a substantial amount of flow going to make them work, this means you are wasting water if you only want a little amount of water to do the dishes. Also since they have a complcated flow device in them they can be prone to malfunction and maintenence on them is expensive and they are also very expensive to purchase in the first place. Another benifit of having a standard 40 gallon water heater tank is that you automatically have 40 gallons of stored water for your house in case there is a line breakage due to an earthquake.
