Earth Charter Summit Honors an Impressive Group of Local Activists

by Sally Carless on October 17, 2008

Citizens for Peaceful Resolutions sponsored the 7th annual Earth Charter Summit at Ventura College last Saturday. It was truly an inspiring event. While Jackson Browne was probably the most well-known activist receiving an award, he was in very good company. The large crowd gave several standing ovations as eight different activists were honored for their work in several different areas:

Respect and care for the community of life
Lester Goldberg for his work and sharing his home with the homeless of Ventura County.
Susan Haverland of the Mixteco/Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP), for her work in aiding and empowering indigenous Oaxacan immigrants in Ventura County.
Ecological Integrity
Rinaldo Brutoco, founder and president of the World Business Academy and noted author whose works include “Freedom From Mid East Oil,” for helping us identify a path to a sustainable future.Â
Social and Economic Justice
Liliana Santuario for her example and courage with the New Sanctuary Movement .
Democracy, Nonviolence and Peace
Cherish Hodge and IVAW for her work with the Iraq Veterans Against the War.
Youth Education and Outreach
Shiela and Carl Smith for their work with Veterans for Peace on youth outreach and truth in recruitment programs among high school students.Â
Youth Activism
Alec Loorz, age 13, for his amazing energy and creativity in Kids vs. Global Warming
Earth Charter and the Arts
Jackson Browne, musician and activist, for his work throughout his career on behalf of the planet lending his support, voice and talents raising awareness to the perils of nuclear power and to Ventura County in particular for supporting causes from Peace Education to protecting the Ventura Hillsides to the work of the Ojai Raptor Center.
In addition, Rinaldo Brutoco gave a fascinating talk about the current state of the planet and the economy. An article on the World Business Academy’s site provides a brief introduction to his ideas.

My pleasure :-) It really was an inspiring event. (It takes a lot to get me out of the house and down the hill to the “big city” these days, but it was really worth it!)
