Y Kant Sarah Read?

I was going to post on something local, but saw this gem from the ongoing Katie Couric interviews. This is truly stunning. You know, I don't think Sarah Palin is dumb at all, judging by her meteoric political rise.

What strikes me is a fundamental incuriosity about the world outside of Alaska. The fact that she was only able to name a single Supreme Court decision earlier this week? She refuses to or can't name a single publication she reads? How do you defend that?

COURIC: And when it comes to establishing your world view, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read, before you were tapped for this, to stay informed and to understand the world?

PALIN: I've read most of them again with a great appreciation for the press for the media, I mean...

COURIC: Like what ones specifically? I'm curious that you...

PALIN: Um, all of 'em, any of 'em that um have been in front of me over all these years, um...

COURIC: Can you name any of them?

PALIN: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news too. Alaska isn't a foreign country where it's kind of suggested it seems like, wow how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, DC may be thinking and doing, when you live up there in Alaska. Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America.

and this from a woman whose major was Journalism.....

What specifically is the problem with this exchange with Couric ? Are you saying that she doesn't know how to read?

The title was a play on words, Brian, based on an old pop album. If you read the first two paragraphs, I think it explains pretty clearly what I think about this.

my favorite line:
like, wow how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, DC may be thinking and doing, when you live up there in Alaska.

The rest of Washington DC?

If you are trying to make something of this exchange I'm not catching your drift.

"She refuses to or can't name a single publication she reads?"

It sounded to me like she reads many different publications and Couric's insistence on having her name them was an irrelevant question. Perhaps she thought that Couric was baiting her on the question. As soon as she would mention a magazine the next days headline would have read - " Palin gets all her information from Time maganize..bla bla bla " Tyler, you have to realize that with 80% of the media in the Obama camp our side has to constantly deal with a hostil media.

Does it really sound to you like she reads many different publications? Couric didn't bait her with an irrelevant question. What happened was Palin turned a softball question about what she reads "to stay informed and to understand the world," and she choked on it. Palin is the story, not Couric, my blindedly partisan friend.

And on the "hostil media" being 80% in the Obama camp, that's absurd.

According to a July 28, 2008 study by the Center for Media and Public Affairs, a 501(c)(3), nonpartisan research and educational organization which has conducted scientific studies of the news and entertainment media since 1985, "since the primaries ended, on-air evaluations of Barack Obama have been 72% negative (vs. 28% positive). That’s worse than John McCain’s coverage, which has been 57% negative (vs. 43% positive) during the same time period."

According to a September 25, 2008 study from the same organization, "Sarah Palin has been more visible and received more positive coverage on television news shows than either John McCain or Barack Obama... Palin has received more positive coverage than either presidential nominee. On the broadcast networks three out of four evaluations (74%) of Palin have been positive, as have three out of five evaluations (60%) on FOX."

So out of what orifice did you pull your 80%, Brian?

OMG, what planet are you inhabiting these days?

Here is the orifice that you requested:

And look who is moderating the VP debate !

Geez BC. Palin's performance here really doesn't bother you, coming from a potential commander in chief? You should be terrified.

Call me "partisan," but somehow I suspect that your reaction would be shrilly different were Obama or Biden to have given that answer.

Recall how Bush famously answered a similar question: "I don't read the papers." Most sane people were appalled by that; most realistic people knew he was shamelessly lying. But all that aside, it was certainly a much better answer than, "oh, all of it..." And then being unable to name a single thing she reads!

Come on BC, get real. You must be getting paid alot to keep stepping up on these. How do they do it? Per post, per word, per line, per hour?

However they do it, I advise you to get paid in cash, up front. It would be truly sad to sacrifice both your credibility and dignity for a bounced check.

I am sure she can read, I am concerned about her ability to speak! She sounds almost as bad as W! Forget "Barracuda", her theme song should be "Ramble On".
