Welcome to the Job, Chief Dunn!

police_091508.jpg
Downtown Ojai, 10:00pm

A brief but high-speed chase ended abruptly at the corner of Grand and Signal Streets when the sedan being chased by Ojai police jumped the curb and traveled nearly 50 feet, landing upside-down in the backyard of the home there.. The driver then fled on foot, with police in pursuit. Many area residents came to the sidewalks, some with flashlights, as indistinct yelling was heard nearby.

By 10:15pm the suspect was apprehended, and witnesses say he was yelling "Mama, Mama!" as he was loaded into the police car. Sheriffs say the unidentified man, whom they're not sure is from around here, fled from the police after they responded to a domestic abuse call.

thanks for the report, E, I came upon the scene on my way home from a friend's and was curious what had happened...

additional info:

local residents were told that the 17-year-old man had beaten his girlfriend on Shady Lane, then led police on a 100mph chase along Grand Ave from Gridley to Signal. The man's grandfather lives on Summer Street, which is where he may have been heading when he lost control of his vehicle at the corner of Grand and Signal Streets. The man was injured in the crash but was not reacting to his wounds, leading police to believe that he was under the influence of unknown substances.

Here's a Police Update on this incident:

Vehicle Pursuit

Last night (Sept. 15th), at 10:00 p.m., deputies received a call of a
male and female fighting in the area of Shady Lane and Ojai Avenue.
When Deputy Dike arrived on the call, he saw the suspect vehicle driving
without lights. When he tried to stop the car, the male driver fled at
high speed eastbound on Ojai Avenue. Deputy Dike turned on his lights
and siren and pursued the vehicle east on Ojai Avenue to Gridley Road.
The driver continued northbound on Gridley to Grand Avenue, where he ran
the stop sign and nearly lost control of his vehicle. The suspect sped
westbound on Grand Ave., running stop signs at the intersections of Park
Road, and Montgomery St. When the driver reached Signal Street, he
tried to turn south but lost control and his car overturned. The car
came to rest in the back yard of a residence at the northwest corner of
Summer and Signal St. Though the car was totaled, the driver fled on
foot but was quickly apprehended by the deputy. Johathan Mosqueda, 22,
was arrested for failing to yield to police, and suspicion of drunk
driving. He was taken to VCMC to be checked for injuries he sustained
in the accident. As a precaution, he remained in the hospital overnight
for observation.

thanks for the clarity, Suza! how interesting to see what was told to people by the police immediately versus what ends up being true upon further investigation!

i'm feeling some sadness for the young man and his family and girlfriend. this must be a very difficult time.

This whole incident saddens me also. Someone could have been killed in a situation like this. There are so many converging forces at work here that led to this young man's second arrest.

I do believe in individual responsibility and protecting the public, but there are many questions that need to be asked and things to look at with wisdom and compassion in order to prevent a third arrest, for possibly a worse crime.

Oh how this saddens me too. Jonathan has been in and out of trouble most of his life. Many times when he was young I would come in to my Juvenile Hall classroom look at the pop sheet and see his name. The last time I saw him was a couple of years ago, he was in transitional housing, working, clean and sober. Since then I've seen his father many times and asked him how Jonathan was doing. His dad would always thank me for asking and say he would tell Jonathan. Again, how sad.
