Fall Gardening Discussion

by Tyler Suchman on September 22, 2008

OK, Ojai garden enthusiasts. What should we be planting in our fall gardens? What are some good container plants for those of us with an abundance of gophers? Where can we get free dirt for raised beds? Have at it…

Free aged horse manure can be had at any of various ranches on Creek Road, which turns into South Ventura Street.

Hey Tyler,
A good winter garden should consist of a variety of veggies as well as legumes for fixing nitrogen back into your soil for your spring and summer garden.
Some suggestions:
Root Crops
Beets, carrots, potatoes and globe onions
For potatoes just take a bag of your favorite potatoes and wait for them to sprout “eyes” then cut them into sections and plant in very loose, sandy soil)
Leaf Crops
Broccoli
Peas of all varieties (these will fix nitrogen, and let decompose with the soil and till in the spring)
Brussells sprouts
Cabbages
Cauliflower
Fava Bean
As far as dirt for your raised beds, I would suggest a combination of three parts free fill dirt (which you can find on craig’s list or a variety of construction sites in Ojai), one part manure (poultry or horse), and one part sand (Ojai lumber or Ojai Concrete). After your winter harvest, which occurs over several months, till in your plants in the early spring and let worms decompose. You should have some awesome soil for your spring and summer crops.
Hope this info helps.

Brian H. – that’s great info, thanks for continuing the discussion. I’m getting fired up for a Victory Garden!
