Indians Fire Update

from the US Forest Service... we'll keep an eye on this one, but its pretty far away at this point.

A fire located 21 miles west of King City, in the Ventana Wilderness of the Los Padres national Forest, was reported today at 12:36 p.m. The fire is now approximately 125 acres in size and continues to burn in oaks and brush and heavy grass. There is currently no containment of the fire which is burning on both sides of the Arroyo Seco-Indians road. No structures are immediately threatened, but 10 summer cabins located 3 miles south east of the fire were evacuated as a precautionary measure only. Temperature in the nineties and relative humidity as low as nine percent have been observed. Wind is predicted to remain out of the north and North West at between ten to fifteen miles per hour. 290 firefighters are currently assigned to the incident, inclusive of 6 hand crews, 2 helicopters, 13 engines, 1 dozer and 1 water tender. Crews will work throughout the evening to build a line around the fire.

9AM UPDATE after the jump...

The Los Padres National Forest Fire Information Call Center at 805-961-5770, will remain in operation this evening until 9:00 p.m. A recorded message will be available at that number throughout the evening. The Call Center will re-open tomorrow at 7:00 a.m., or if there is a significant change in the fire’s behavior.

The Indians Fire is located approximately 21 miles west of the town of King City in the Ventana Wilderness of Los Padres National Forest, in Monterey County. The fire has burned 800 acres and has been burning in a south east
direction from Escondido Campground. It continues to burn on both sides of the Arroyo Seco-Indians Road which is bounded on both sides by the VentanaWilderness. The fire is burning in steep rocky terrain and heavy grass, oaks and brush. The north side of the fire is now 5% contained. Fifteen summer cabins in the Santa Lucia Tract, have been evacuated as a precautionary measure. Temperature in the area today is predicted to be in the 80's with very low relative humidity and winds 4-8 mph out of the northwest. There are 383 firefighters currently assigned to the incident
including 15 handcrews, 3 helicopters, 16 fire engines, 1 bulldozer and 2 water tender. There have been no injuries reported. Cause of the fire is under investigation.
