Found Dog at F&C

A reader writes in. Let's find this dog his home. - tyler

A nice beagle was found at the Farmer and Cook on Friday night. He has a collar but it looks like the ID tag fell off (ring but no tags). He may have been recently neutered and seems well fed. We can't keep him, and if we can't find his owner soon, will have to take him to the shelter.

He wandered in to the Farmer while Fred Schmitt was playing on March 7, sometime between 7 and 9 pm. The owners could call Fred at 805-746-4566 to coordinate a return.

UPDATE: (from reader Lynn) Found the owners! Dog is named Duke and apparently he follows his nose, wherever it goes (maybe he should be called fruitloop?) Hound and owner happily reunited. Yay!

On closer look, this dog might be a Basset Hound. His ears are amazingly long. Please help us get him home! peace.... Lynn

Our local Humane Society is no kill and may be the very place the owners go to find their lost pet.

Basset Hounds have a reputation for wandering off. There is a good chance he wandered away from one of the nearby houses, so I hope someone is able to check around the neighborhood before taking him to the HS.

I hope Lynn or Tyler will let us know what happens to the dog.

how 'bout a photo?

It would also be good to call the Humane Society to find out if anyone has come looking for the dog.

El A, made me laugh. That dog is buff.

As I understand it, and I hope I am wrong, the Humane Society may transfer lost dogs to the Camarillo facility, and they are definitely not no-kill. I hope someone will fact-find before dropping off the dog. I surrendered a stray to animal control many years ago and it still haunts me, wondering what happened to that big beautiful rotweiler.

Heather, thank you for mentioning this. I know this was the procedure several years ago when a friend of mine turned in a lost dog. When I went over there to adopt it (with the condition that I would return it to the owners if they came looking for the dog) we were told the dog was in Camarillo. We checked on the dog every day to make sure they knew we wanted to adopt it and that nothing would happen to the dog by mistake. I believe the dog was held in Camarillo three to five days before we could begin the adoption process. The process may be different now, but you are so right to remind us to check on what can happen before we relinquish a lost dog. Even if it is not killed, if the owners don't show up, the dog may wait for years. The future is uncertain.

Ideally, if you find a dog and cannot keep it, as difficult as it might be, do what you can to find it a home your self.

Besides the Humane Society, there are other local animal organizations that may be able to help.

Hey, dog's got his home! See main post above.

Thanks to all who took interest in "The Duke Affair". Special thanks to Tyler for having nano-second-fast turn-around time and being super cool, and to Duke's owners, for looking for him, too.
Just for Info - Ojai (Ventura County) shelter keeps "lost" dogs for 3 days, then transfers them to Camarillo, if the owner is not located. If the owner does not claim the dog at the Camarillo facility within 7 days, the dog goes up for adoption. Typically it is a minimum of 3 weeks in adoption status before anything morose happens. They also work with breed rescue services. I know this because we tend to find a lot of stray / lost canine friends. Call it karma. Or dogma. Either way, it beats getting run over by a truck!
imho. of course ;-)

I don't get it? Don't these people watch their dogs? No leash? NO supervision? They just wander off? Maybe we should give the owner a lollypop for looking for his dog? Anyone ever heard of prevention? Watch your dogs!

I'm with #12 What?
No tags or chip either...lousy parenting! (I wouldn't be surprised if this has happened before). Having a little pooch and loving a little pooch is not enough - you got to watch the little darling and keep him safe 24/7...

d- do you have a chip?

I will pay 89cents a pound for this delicious er I mean precious animal!
