Happy Birthday, Ojai Post!

Two years in existence! My deep gratitude to our fantastic authors, gracious readers, knowledgeable yet snarky commenters and the Ojai community in general for your embrace of what I've called a "community experiment." Here's to year three of making a difference, raising the issues, engaging our community and laughing out loud.

Happy B'day!!

I keep having this discussions with friends about blogging. The usual argument goes, "Blogging is just a waste of time and no one cares what people say on an obscure blog on the internet". I always end up defending blogging, probably because I'm too prolific on this and other sites.

Setting aside how many people may read the ojaipost for a moment, I think writing comments and guest editorials can ONLY be a good thing. The act of writing for communication forces one to examine and defend ideas and points-of-view. It facilitates understanding and communication in much the same way that a resistor in an electric circuit steps down or conditions electricity to be used for a specific purpose. Unfettered electricity like disorganized thought is just static.

Al Gore, in his book The Assault on Reason he posits the argument that a Democracy like ours needs written discourse to survive. He argues that the founders knew the importance of written discourse and that the 1st Amendment is strong evidence of this. He points to the Federalist Papers to show how the arguments and ideals of the Constitution itself were examined and argued by the framers in written discourse. He also goes on to talk about how this type of communication has atrophied and how the mainstream media has faltered in its constitutionally protected duty. I recommend the book highly.

I'm not saying that the Ojaipost and other blogs will save the country, but it certainly couldn't hurt. Even if no one reads my comments because they're too long or mean or whatever, I still benefit from having written them.

Thanks Tyler.

Well said spk! Thank you!!

Darling Tyler, thank you for letting me be part of "your community experiment" - I love Ojai and have met so many wonderful people through the post! Much love and good wishes on all your future experiments! This one is obviously a huge success! love Dvorah

i don't think that snarky does us justice.

we are way more than crotchety, snappish, sarcastic, impertinent, or irreverent in tone or manner.

You might have a point there!

So, what is a word that means "way more than crotchety, snappish, sarcastic, impertinent, or irreverent in tone or manner."

If you find it, let us know!

Someone had to do it, grateful it is you.

instead of snarky commenters, how about

creative critics
or
untamed multitudes
or
wild choir

The thing I appreciate most
is how the post dialogue brings out thoughful intelligent reflection, not
the warned over milk toast
of the other blog in town.
And how dissent is addressed but not throttled like that news blog depending on which way the political winds happen to be blowing.PL

Tyler,

That number: 4,821. Is that separate, discreet visitors?

It's not uniques, Sean, which run at about 60% of the "daily visitors."

Happy Birthday Ojai Post! Thank you for giving the snarky among us a forum.

Congrats Tyler!
Keep up the good work.
