Happy Valentine's Day! Favorite Love Songs?

Happy-Valentine.jpgIn honor of Valentine's Day, NPR recently shared their listeners' favorite love songs on their show, "All Songs Considered." There are a lot of interesting picks, some that I had never heard of - not your typical mainstream collection. I can't believe Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" didn't make the list. And the one my husband and I love, The Smith's, "A Light That Never Goes Out," also didn't make the cut. What could be more romantic than these lyrics: "And if a double-decker bus/crashes in to us/to die by your side/is such a heavenly way to die./And if a ten-ton truck/kills the both of us/to die by your side/well, the pleasure, the privilege, is mine?" Romantic, funny and sad all at once.

What's your favorite love song? What are you doing for V-day? Do you have a V-Day wish for anyone?

One of my favorite sad love songs from Paul Thorn, "Temporarily Forever Mine"
http://www.amazon.com/Hammer-Nail-Paul-Thorn/dp/B000002GO9

The door on the mailbox is rusted shut
Grass in my yard sure has grown up
One of the chains is broken on the front porch swing
I don't know why I came
I guess I had to see this one more time
This little house we shared in better times

Way out yond to see those big old black clouds moving
I wish the wind would blow me back in time
Those were the days, I had it made
When you where temporarily forever mine

Did you know your mother still calls me?
She's got a special place in her heart for me
I'll always be her favorite son-in-law
She wonders what went wrong
And I know that time could take this pain away
But time can't take me back to yesterday

Those were the days, I had it made
When you where temporarily forever mine

dear Lisa,

There is no open thread available on the Post so I hope you will forgive me for posting this political comment on this thread.

Hillary took the occasion of Valentine's Day to initiate the new phase of her campaign.... the one I have been predicting.... phase four of the scorched earth policy against Obama. She literally held up boxing gloves to emphasize that she is coming out swinging. She accused Obama of offering nothing but speeches, and she said "words are cheap." Bill is back in action too.... he had the audacity to say on a radio talk show in Wisconsin that their campaign has been operating "on a shoestring." This is just a preview of what we may expect in the next two weeks.

If this is what the Clintons are capable of on Valentine's Day, who knows what they will come up with before Texas and Ohio on March 4.

Let's not turn this into a political thread. Please post those comments here:

Thank you.

I am QUITE partial to "Slave to Love" by Brian Ferry.

i have a couple of votes:

"Banana Pancakes" by the none-too-popular-among-the-old-and-bitter-crowd Jack Johnson.

Brak is a zany romantic. He's also a former space pirate, and is now a prisoner/co-host on the Space Ghost talk show. You might like these two, Lisa:

from "I Love You, Baby"
We could get married, just the two of us!
You could get a job, driving a school bus!
I love you baby, will you marry me?
You don't have to decide right away...think it over...who's it gonna hurt?
Where you going?...

from "Crazy Lovesick Fool"
Brak: I remember the night we met. It was in the laundromat.
Zorak: You came in to wash your feet. She was eating a pile of meat.
Brak: And that, as they say, was that!

very sorry, Lisa,

as a mere commenter, i don't know how to remove my comment from your thread..... but i believe you as Author have the Power to do so..... please feel free..... this one too.....

(actually i kind of thought that if you could consider death by a ten-ton truck to qualify as a love song, you might allow Hillary in this category too..... mea culpa....)

Interesting but odd list. Hard for me to believe that most NPR listeners would rate Magnetic Fields and Bert Jansen above better-known songs by famous singers (such as "Court and Spark" by Joni Mitchell, "To Love Somebody" by Nina Simone, or "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground," by Willie Nelson, to mention just a few personal favorites).

"If you had not have fallen
Then I would not have found you
Angel flying too close to the ground
And I patched up your broken wing
And hung around a while
Tried to keep your spirits up
While you were feelin' down
I knew someday that you would fly away
For love's the greatest healer to be found
So leave me if you need to
I will still remember
Angel flying too close to the ground"

Keb' Mo' - Dangerous Mood Lyrics

Look out baby
I'm in a dangerous mood
I done called up the bossman
Told him where to go
And just what to do

Call me crazy
But i did what I had to do
You can call me stupid
I just did what I had to do
I had to steal a little time baby
So I could spend it all on you
I parked the car down the street
And I unplugged the phone
So it would look just like
Ain't nobody home
I put a rose on your pillow
Where you lay your pretty head
I'm gonna rub your tired shoulders
Bring your dinner to your bed

Look out baby
I'm in a dangerous mood
I had to steal a little time baby
So I could spend it all on you

I'm gonna light a candle
Put the champagne on ice
And if one ain't enough
Well we'll just have to do it twice
I done made myself a will
And I've called my next of kin
'Cause I'm gonna love you over
And over and over
Again and again

Look out baby
I'm in a dangerous mood
I had to steal a little time baby
So I could spend it all on you

Look out baby
I'm in a dangerous mood
Look out baby
I'm in a dangerous mood
I just this one last paycheck baby
And I'm gonna spend every dime on you

new open thread at the top of the Post, thanks all!

Northern Sky by Nick Drake. My wife and I chose this as our wedding song.

I never felt magic crazy as this
I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand
Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree
But now you're here
Brighten my northern sky.

I've been a long time that I'm waiting
I'VE Been a long TIME that I'm blown
I've been a long time that I've wandered
Through the people I have known
Oh, if you would and you could
Straighten my new mind's eye.

Would you love me for my money
Would you love me for my head
Would you love me through the winter
Would you love me 'til I'm dead
Oh, if you would and you could
Come blow your horn on high.

I never felt magic crazy as this
I never saw moons knew the meaning of the sea
I never held emotion in the palm of my hand
Or felt sweet breezes in the top of a tree
But now you're here
Brighten my northern sky.

Put me down for Joni’s “(I could drink) A Case of You”; Etta James’ “At Last’, and Sinatra doing “I’ll Be Loving You…Always”. Gotta include Greg Brown’s “Spring Wind” and Righteous Bros ”Unchained Melody”. Happy Valentine’s to all.

My personal favorite is White Dress by Fairport Convention led by the late, great Sandy Denny:

"Kiss me
and I might
put on the white dress
If you'll take me dancing tonight."

A young couple I know chose I'll Follow You into the Dark by Death Cab for Cutie as the first dance at their wedding:

"Love of mine
Someday you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark
No blinding lights or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of the spark

If heaven and hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark"
and so on...

Shoot, I'm feeling all mushy and romantic now. NPR's list doesn't hold a scented candle to the Ojai Post's! I'm going to add one more: "Only the Lonely" by the Motels. My husband and I danced to that song at our wedding. C'mon, david, dontcha have a love song in you?

i'll take the grateful dead's "they love each other" and jill scott and mos def "love rain" (sometimes more of a spoken word piece i guess).

love to all.

dear Lisa,

How sweet of you to ask.... may I offer a poem instead of a song? This is for you, and for Suza, and for Leigh, and for Dvorah, and for LTOR, and for Tyler, and evan, and spk, and Millenium, and Kenley, and El Anonimo, and old ojai coot, and everyone i have forgotten to mention, and all the anonymouses, and everyone else who makes Ojai Post such a great place to visit.....

It is by W.H. Auden....

Lullaby

Lay your sleeping head, my love,
Human on my faithless arm;
Time and fevers burn away
Individual beauty from
Thoughtful children, and the grave
Proves the child ephemeral;
But in my arms till break of day
Let the living creature lie,
Mortal, guilty, but to me
The entirely beautiful

Soul and body have no bounds:
To lovers as they lie upon
Her tolerant enchanted slope
In their ordinary swoon,
Grave the vision Venus sends
Of supernatural sympathy,
Universal love and hope;
While an abstract insight wakes
Among the glaciers and the rocks
The hermit's carnal ecstasy.

Certainty, fidelity
On the stoke of midnight pass
Like vibrations of a bell
And fashionable madmen raise
Their pedantic boring cry;
Every farthing of the cost,
All the dreaded cards foretell,
Shall be paid, but from this night
Not a whisper, not a thought,
Not a kiss nor look be lost.

Beauty, midnight, vision dies;
Let the winds of dawn that blow
Softly round your dreaming head
Such a day of welcome show
Eye and knocking heart may bless,
Find our mortal world enough;
Noons of dryness find you fed
By the involuntary powers,
Nights of insult let you pass
Watched by every human love.

Happy Valentine's Day
Wavy Davy!
With love,
Beau,
Trixie,
Faccia,
Green Dream,
Blue Moon,
Princess Pricilla,
Leo the Lion,
and the spirits of
Whitey,
Rossie,
Tiny Cat,
Queenie
and Pierre,
who lives on eternally
in all of us...
We send you our
unconditional love
and gratitude,
Always.

good grief

how could i have forgotten to mention the brave Brian

and fabulous phalarope: (whatever happened to phalarope?)

and who knows who else??

(and to Mysterious Benefactor... nobody but me will get quite what you mean.... but maybe that will make it of the essence......)

Touch Me

Sometimes we go too far,
There's no turning back now,
Walking the razors edge.
Giving more than we take,
Taking just what we need,
And needing to be close to you.

Touch me, come on and touch me,
Taste my breath inside your breath,
Hold my hand up to heaven,
Hold my hands to your heart, Hold my hands to your heart.

Too much conversation,
So much self control,
So much excitation.,
Burning in my soul.
Too much confrontation,
Pounding in my head,
Shaking with sensation,
Drop the skin.,
Drop the skin you’ve shed.

I feel so much love for you,
I feel so much love for you,
Like the clouds to the sun,
Waters to the cliff,
Rivers to the sea.
Flowers to the fragrance,
Fruit to the trees.
I feel the above and below of you.

Sometimes we go too far,
There's no turning back now,
Walking the razors edge.
Giving more than we take,
Taking just what we need,
And needing to be close to you.

(might as well face it You're) Addicted To Love...???

only because of those stone cold foxes prancing in their black miniskirts, and oh those luscious red lips!

awww...thanks David! Hope everyone had a lovely evening last night!!
