Poetry At The Village Jester
Starting this coming Monday, Tree Bernstein will host a regular poetry reading series at The Village Jester Restaurant & Pub on the first Monday of each month. The evening will start with an open mic at 8PM and a featured poet at 8:30. This coming Monday, February 4th, the series will kick off its feature with poet and Ojai Poetry Festival co-founder James P. Lenfestey and his collection of poems inspired by the 1200-year-old Chinese hermit poet Han-shan, including titles such as "Han-shan is the Cure for Warts," and "Thinking of Sex Like the Chinese." This is an evening not to be missed.

At first when I heard that Nigel wanted a real "pub" in Ojai, I just didn't believe it. I've been watching closely and I and very encouraged. Local music, good open mic, now poetry. That's awesome! If we can get some real beer on tap, I'm there.

Mr. Anonimo, do you really live in OJai? Have you lived there long? Have you been to the Jester's open mic? Clinton does an excellent open mic of local Ojai musicians at the Jester. The majority of them are fairly young, but I actually heard original music there. That's pretty cool.

yeah, i really do live in the ojai valley- lower ojai-upper oak view as i like to say.
not very long, but enough to sort of know the score.
i have been to an open mic.
As a musician myself, and not as a parent of one of the young performers, it was sort of painful.
but i cant wait to try the tofu there

I believe/assume the open mic on Monday night will be for poetry (not music). I recommend showing up before 8PM to make sure you get on the list.

Yup, only spoken word on Mondays. Come and enjoy. And...the tofu is great (if you like that kind of thing!).

I will come to the poetry reading because I am a (not-so) secret admirer of Tree Bernstein.
I can think of nothing as remotely enjoyable and profoundly romantic as sharing a tofu steak with Ms. Bernstein, while neo-syllogistic couplets in the background presented in a mellifluous and sonorous sotto voce

What a great turnout and an entertaining and eclectic mix of readings (I was wrong; there was singing). Kudos to Tree and The Jester for a great kickoff.

Hi Nigel,
I'm communicating with you here as I know you're busy, don't have your number, and The Village Jester does not have a site yet that I'm aware of.
#1: It was nice meeting you last night!
A name with a face is always nice. I've heard many good things about you and what you're doing to help energize Ojai. Yes, Ojai has needed some new energy! Also, I cannot wait to try the fish and chips.
#2: Was wondering if you were planning to have (or perhaps you already have had) a Grand Opening party. Regardless, as I was listening to the English Beat and a variety of other British bands from the 80's this morning was thinking it might be fun for you to have a "British Invasion" night. As you might have guessed; I just happen to have a great collection of British music, past and present. Please let me know if the idea appeals to you (or anyone reading this).
Thanks and have a wonderful Ojai day.

Hi All. The Grand Opening kind of never happened. Things just got going real fast and here we are 5 months later! I am sure that Daniel will come and spin at some point. Kristine, nice meting you, too. Sorry I couldn't chat more...I tend to get a bit busy as you saw. We'll have you down in the future so you can do your thing. I'll look forward to it.

No worries, Nigel. You were taking care of business. :)
In the meantime, may I suggest you check out my site by clicking on my name? I have a music library browse and search feature on the home page that is unique among deejays. You can search my current 5200+ song library by genre, artist, song name, or album name. I have over 1,000 songs from the 80's!
One thing that makes me unique is I never use MP3s and further enhance sound quality with digital to analog converters creating a very rich sound. Am starting a "U-DJ" service which allows much more audience participation. People get to select songs from my laptop and play deejay for a set and I'm the facilitator-technician. Used it for the first time at a New Year's eve. party and it was such a success! Plus I get to dance more. :D
BTW I mentioned your acoustics before and realize with a new business you probably can't take care of everything at once and I would not consider it an impediment at this time. My sound system may be able to overcome any imperfections.
Keep dancing everybody!

Kristine, that's your third sales pitch to Nigel on these pages! Why don't you just pay Nigel a visit in person?
Comment #17 Posted by: To KL | March 20, 2008 01:56 PM
#17 I did.

BTW 17:
I appreciate your viewpoint, and I wasn't just sales pitching to Nigel, I was sales pitching to anyone who reads this blog, as I'm sure you're aware. Am peddling my wares rather shamelessly as I feel that what I have to offer is unique and shamelessly fun. There may be people out there looking for the unique thing I have to offer, but obviously if I don't toot my own horn about it, no one will know. I may be guilty of "impropriety" but I doubt it will be the last time. :)
Also, I have a daughter, a mortgage, and a lovely cat to support besides myself, which makes me even more shameless in sales pitching. Hope you can appreciate that, but first and foremost, my motivation as a deejay is to facilitate the flow.
