Observing life outside Ojai
It's already 2008. Can anyone else remember thinking, way back when, "I wonder what it's going to be like in 2000?" Well, here we are 8 years beyond, and my how things are different than what I could have ever imagined.
When I was in high school, and then in college, and then a high school teacher, I always thought about traveling. I wrote school reports on history, politics, language; and, Peru, Egypt and gray wolves... Now, I work in cities around the world. I accept that I could be working in England on a Saturday and gardening in my back yard on a Tuesday... it's the world we live in.
What follows are just a few observations I made over the past 4 weeks...enjoy!
Munich: I flew over to Munich to have dinner with a friend. (Ok, there's a bit more to the story, but I'll save that for later.) I got on a plane in the morning on Friday, 28 January, and landed in the early afternoon on the 29th. I went for a long walk through one of my favorite places in the world, the English Garden (the view of AND from the Monopteros was wonderful!) and then had dinner with a new friend (who traveled to Munich from Frankfurt to have dinner with me!). The next morning, I was back on a plane at 11am for the long flight (actually, three flights) back to California.
While walking through the garden, I caught this picture of someone "surfing" in a river, and am convinced of one thing: Where there is a will, there IS a way!
New York City: This city really never sleeps. I was there during the week before the holidays, and was astounded by how many people were there, out, shopping, eating, laughing...even though the temperature was down in the 20's and the 30's. If there is one thing I could "go back and do again," it would be to change some of the things I taught while working at Nordhoff. As much as I focused on the "past," I wish I could have found some ways to focus on the present, and the future.

I would have wanted to share my love of travel, so that if I ever heard a student say, "Ojai is so BORING!" then I could show up and show them how to see what more the world has to offer through expansion, travel, and learning.
West Marin County: My brother, Nathan Womack, and I completed our 5th annual Womack Annual Century bike ride throughout the northern part of the Bay Area. It was a great day, although in my enthusiasm for planning the "perfect ride," we did wind up riding a bit long - 109.82 miles in total!
