Sue Horgan backs out for '08

OVN writes that Sue Horgan won't run for City Council in 2008, and requested that she be mayor for her last year. Horgan, who I personally like but politically have disagreed with on a number of issues, including her votes against the chain store ordinance and funding for the visitor's bureau, leaves an opening for a City Council seat wide open in November.

Anyone want to handicap the cattle call?

...but did seat herself as mayor a year early, having
Mr. DeVito postpone being mayor for his last term by a year. Gosh and golly gee whiskers! You mean this woman can use her pull to be seated early as mayor and everyone lets her? Could they(and the bank)
also change the name to County Commerce Council?

Joe Devito's admission that "he had known about Horgan's proposal when he answered interview questions about his upcoming term as mayor, but chose not to divulge anything because he did not want to violate the Brown Act," does not make sense!

Furthermore, according to the OVN's,
he "also added that he didn't want to draw attention to himself or the situation." Surely there was a better way to handle this awkward situation than pretending to be the new mayor. Couldn't he have asked the media to hold off making any formal announcements till after the next City Council meeeting?

There had to be a better way to handle this!

Re above comment, "does not make sense"
I should have said, "does not make sense to me."

I don't know all the facts surrouning this situation, only what I read in the OVN's.

As far as I know, there is nothing that prohibits any council member from taking their turn as mayor outside of the normal rotating order, as long as the other members approve. I can understand Sue's request.

suza, this stinks!! will you be our mayor?

So who should run for city council? Let's see...

In no particular order:

Lenny
Kenley
Leslie
Demitri
Todd
Jeff
Evan
Someone else?

List your nominees

I agree with Suza--"There had to be a better way to handle this".
From all accounts, it sounds like the council was bushwhacked by this move, not to mention the news media and citizenry.
Am I the only one who sees irony in Ms Horgan wanting to "take time to focus on other things in the years to come", so her solution is to become the mayor of Ojai and to upset the accepted order of things in order to do so. Is this a call to service or a forcing of time to put another notch in what she perceives as her belt of achievement? If she really wanted to conclude her term "on a positive note", she should have graciously served under Mayor DeVito. As is, there is always going to be a certain skepticism about her motives. Then again, perhaps this was Joe Devito's idea. Perhaps he didn't feel up to the job......Is that likely or not?
Alas, youngins, marshal your forces and get ready to run for council, because there is apparently something amiss.

hey Sean, don't leave yourself off of that list!

For the list of nominees I recommend looking at some of the leaders in the Ojai Valley Green Coalition such as Dulanie Ellis La Barre.

PS I left out the word "also":

For the list of nominees I ALSO recommend looking at some of the leaders in the Ojai Valley Green Coalition such as Dulanie Ellis La Barre.
