kenley --

what is that sad photo of that poor monkey doing atop your favorite music list???

how ironic that you posted that photo on top of suza's post about humane treatment of animals....

I just picked one of the CD covers and included it here. I've gone ahead and changed it so others are not offended. If you missed the cover, it was for Grinderman's release (see link above).

o.k.... sorry..... i'm probably hypersensitive (being a kittykat and all......)

Sorry, I hit the "post" too soon. That was me above.

What I wanted to further say is that making Kenley feel compelled to edit a post (on a thread that he started about other people's music) out of fear of offending people REALLY makes me crazy!

What I THOUGHT got "posted" (but obviously wasn't) was the following comment:

"On PC Patrol, are we Kittykat?"

I honestly didn't mind changing the picture; and I think kittykat already clarified her position. In all honesty, Grinderman can pretty offensive and I almost didn't use their image (other songs on the CD include Get It On and No Pussy Blues) but the really ROCK and I think Nick Cave is a master. The whole CD is great.

LTOR, you are quite right.... point well taken....

on the other hand, i have already said, sorry....

and also.... what WAS that picture anyway?.... what was that poor monkey doing/feeling/representing??.... especially in combination with that title.... whatever it was.... grinderman, was it??

Circus monkey (turn down the volume on your computer first).

Sorry, KK. I posted rather impulsively. I've come back to the computer fearful I was in for a catfight and am relieved that you are such a good sport.

Rock on....

Kenley-
how do you get exposure to new music?
friends, mtv, satellite radio, etc...
how old are you?

i like to think of myself as a musician, but i barely recognize the artists you cite.

i usually revert back to my ole faves...
Eagles- haven't even heard their new release because of the WalMart only release.
I look forward to anything Steely Dan puts out- even if I only have Donald Fagen's special 3 cd/dvd box set to look forward to.
at this point in the game the only thing i really look forward to are live performances- but not to extreme ticket prices and mediocre seats.

my dream is to take over the Majestic Ventura Theater, pour tons of money into refurbishing it into a world class venue and offer free rock and trance concerts every night of the year

El Anonimo - I don't listen to the radio (haven't in years), so I rely primarily on artists that I know and love and the connections they make (this one on that one, etc.). I also have some good music buddies that pass on music ideas. I've also seen about 1000 bands in concert so I have a broad foundation to draw upon.

If you'd like a copy of the compilation, let me know and I can send it your way. The sounds on this compilation range from Country to Techno to Rock to New Age. I could go through this whole list above and tell you how I heard about each and what connections they have to other musicians.

I'm 40 and I LOVE music.

Kenley-

I's love to take you up on your offer.
Let's see.
perhaps you could drop me an email:

elanonimo@elanonimo.com
(just kidding...)

how about:
ojaiguy@roadrunner.com

i'm a generation older than you and i have a need to act younger.
being hip to new soundz is a sure gateway to that.

Try www.Pandora.com to help find new music you will like.

Since my kids hit their teens…and that was some time ago...I have always asked them to give me a compilation CD for Xmas, choosing contemporary music that they thought I would enjoy. Now they all do it for each other. So every year we get 5 new CDs full of music with homemade liner notes. In this way, I got to know Beth Orton, Tori Amos, Beck, Pavement, PJ Harvey, and Fiona Apple, as well as more esoteric groups like The Bugs, Built to Spill, The Black heart Procession, or Animal Collective. In recent years, it has made me smile to more old familiar artists make their “Hit” CDs, like Neil Young, Otis Redding, or Leonard Cohen. If you donate to KCRW, they will send you a CD of the best of Morning Becomes Eclectic, always a great source of sound.
Thanks for the playlist, Henley.

speaking of "Henley", may I recommend Don Henley (former/current Eagle) who in my opinion is the Bob Dylan of the new millennium and a superbly profound songwriter/singer/drummer/guitarista/ecologista (pretty much saved Walden Pond from condosization)/etc.

he probably put something new on the latest Eagles release but because there's no Walmart in Ojai, I can't buy it (haha), and I can't download it yet and I haven't yet looked around to pirate it.

I love it Dennis! Many of those bands you mentioned have made it to my CD compilation over the years. I'm especially a fan of PJ Harvey (her new one just came out) and Beck (who I saw at Echo in LA earlier this year).

Anybody want to take me up on creating a list of favorites for 2007?

I cannot believe how funny you old folks are!

FYI - El Anonimo...the owner of Ojai Creates will order CDs for you if you have a special request. A great way to support a local business (since Ojai doesn't have Wal-Mart) :)

Leslie-

I know you are kind of a media savvy person.
As I understand it, the Eagles made an exclusive deal with WalMart, who bought 3Million CDs, to distribute their new recording. These new kinds of deals for musical acts are becoming more and more common as the face of the music biz has changed radically and continues to change.

As I mentioned previously the only thing that REALLY turns me on is live music, whether it is my own or others.

But I would pop into a WalMart or Sams Club or Amazon or eBay to find a new or used copy of "The Long Out of Eden". I actually prefer that to downloading it becaus eof the sound quality and the small cover art.

ROCK ON!

Yes, Kenley, thanks for the reminder about '07 best music. I've been all about local original music this year: Champagne Sunday, Fred Schmitt, Myridian, Emy Reynolds, etc. I've been collecting tunes on RadioOjai (click my signature) and eager to hear more locals if you know of any willing to put their music up for all of us to enjoy.

oops

Leslie- I confused you with Lisa, our local radioteer.

El A: One can usually experience local original LIVE music at The Farmer and the Cook on Fri/Sat/Sun eves.

i have not yet availed myself of that scene, but i have noticed that they have quite a culinary and musical enterprise going on down there.

thanx for reminder

"just let the music take you where you want to go..."

doobies?

Eagles: "Long Road Out Of Eden"

No political discussion should be carried on till Don Henley's latest pronouncements are considered.
