Faux News blames Al Qaeda for California Wildfires
From Think Progress:
This morning on Fox News, hosts of the show Fox and Friends blamed the wildfires in California on a new culprit: al Qaeda. They pointed to a 2003 FBI memo, which raised the possibility that al Qaeda may try to set wildfires around the western United States. They also noted that men in a “hovering helicopter” saw “a guy starting one of these fires.”
Later in the segment, host Steve Doocy acknowledged that in memo, al Qaeda didn’t even mention California. “They mention Colorado, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming,” he added. (emphasis mine)
Watch it and read the transcript.
i guess the whole "fight 'em over there so we don't have to fight 'em over here" thing didnt work out so well. Bring the troops home to fight Al Qaeda's fires! is "fear-mongering" one word, or two?

When Chertoff and Bush became almost immediately involved and concerned with the California fires, I told a friend it was too bad that Hurricane Katrina didn't happen the year before a presidential election, and also opined that this was a wonderful opportunity to blame all of this on the you-know-whos. I was only kidding, but obviously some people are not kidding.
The hovering helicopter story sounds like pure BS, doesn't it? They just happened to be hovering at the exact spot where someone was going to set a fire, and the presence of the helicopter didn't scare off the alleged perp? Reet.

When I Googled "arson, southern california" I found terrorist theories all over the internet.
People are saying that "There were 10+ seperate, un-related fires." Even after reading the excellent Fire OpEd in today's LA Times (posted elsewhere) who doesn't wonder about the odds that this many fires could have started coincidentally this close together?

How ridiculous ! Al Qaeda starting fires over here. Why would they want to do that? Everybody knows that these fires are from global warming.

From what I can gather, it appears as though unusually strong winds have been knocking down power lines which have been causing fires. The continued high temperatures and the winds have thoroughly dried out the vegetation as well. I suggest that it may be time to bury our power lines or at the very least reenforce the telephone poles - which have proven to be structually inadequate. Here's one article that mentions downed power lines as the suspected cause of at least some of these fires.

Perhaps we should all surf and clear our heads.
