Ojai Peace Coalition Awards First-Ever Noble Peace Prize

Last night was the opening ceremonies of the Living Peace in Ojai weekend, which were all moved to the Chaparral Auditorium due to the rain. Despite inclement weather and last-minute venue change, around 100 people showed up to celebrate the International Day of Peace and to welcome the weekend's activities.

We had all the things that make a great event: improvisation, technical trouble, unanticipated weather...
and yet, it was clearly where people wanted to be:
• when i gently ended our two minutes of candle-lit silence with a Mother Theresa quote and invited people to a brief intermission while we set up for the film, nobody moved for several more minutes. Many continued with their eyes closed as Alitta and Joss' harmonic music soothed us.
• when setting up for the film took something like 40 minutes rather than the 10 i'd intended and announced, people not only stayed but jumped right up to help make it happen.

This evening's activities have also been moved to the Chaparral auditorium. Jonathan McEuen will begin playing any minute now (it's 5:20pm at the time of posting) for an hour, followed by The Peace Alliance's presentation of The Gift of Peace play at 7pm. Tony Khalife and his live world music band will perform after the play.

Tomorrow morning's interspiritual ceremonies and services are still planned for Libbey Bowl starting at 6:30am, but keep an eye on this page and the event website for location updates.

I couldn't get the video to work but I thank you from the bottom of my heart for awarding the First-Ever Noble Peace Prize to long time Ojai residents Clive and Marion Leeman, two of the brightest lights on Planet Earth, and the noble, dedicated participants of the weekly Ojai Peace Vigil! I feel so guilty that I did not make the extra effort to attend and hope I have a good Karma credit from the past.

Keep up the good work, evan!

I can't think of anyone who deserved this award more than the Leemans. Great call, evan.

I have known the Clive and Marion for over twenty years and I am pleased to see them so honored. However, their stand for peace through the weekly vigils are just one expression of their commitment. From their lives and work in Africa to their many years as classsroom teachers, the Leemans have spoken out for human justice, peace and sanity. It is a pleasure to see this commitment recognized.
