It's All Happening: Film Festival, Comedy and Running

This week, my social calendar is tapped out, thanks to an amazing number of opportunities to get out there offered by incredibly talented people right here in our own little town. From films to comedy to running for a worthy cause, the first weekend in October promises to get us moving, laughing and thinking.

It all starts Thursday night with the Ojai Film Festival’s free opening night film: In the Shadow of the Moon. Howard posted information about it here. I just love the magic of the Ojai Film Festival and look forward to the Libbey Park special screening every year.

On Friday night, another group of graduating students from Theater 150’s stand-up comedy class will perform at Giorgio’s. My good friend Sheila Murphy is among the half-dozen performing comics, as is Bret Bradigan of the OVN. Under the direction of professional comedian Cary Odes, last season’s acts were a riot, and this one promises not to disappoint. More info here.

Saturday morning (I’ll have to remember to keep the beer consumption at Giorgio’s down) is the annual October Classic Run. Registration starts at 7:15 a.m., the 10K starts at 8:00 a.m. and the 5K starts at 8:45 a.m. If you pre-register by Wednesday, October 3rd, the fee is $25 for adults and to register the day of the event, it’s $30. My husband, Bill, is running in the 10K and I am working the registration table for those who did not pre-register, so I’ll know if you procrastinate (but I will be delighted to see you supporting a worthy cause)! It doesn’t matter if you walk or run, because all proceeds support our hospital. To register, call (805) 640-2317.

And on Sunday afternoon, I will be screening The Price of Paradise at the Ojai Film Festival. This documentary has had three festival screenings to date, and this is the first time it will be shown in Ojai. There has been a lot of talk on these pages about affordable housing. What does that mean to you? Who should have it? What should it look like? Where should it be built? The documentary, The Price of Paradise, does not seek to answer these questions, but rather engage a dialog.

Film's synopsis: Santa Barbara County, paradise to some, has seen a dramatic escalation in the cost of housing, thus displacing the community's critical workforce. The experiences of those workers and the impacts to families, community and employers provide insight and an understanding of the need for affordable workforce housing. Interviews, artistic cinematography and a percussionist soundtrack are featured.

Locals Michael Anderson and Austen Collins of Extra Mile Productions worked with me for about 10 months on this project and we are really proud of the film's acceptance into our own hometown’s festival. For more information, related articles and trailers, go to the film’s Web site.

Congratulations, Tyler!!!

Happy Birthday Rumi

Click here to learn About Rumi

Don't worry about saving these songs!
And if one of our instruments breaks, it doesn't matter.
We have fallen into the place where everything is music.
The strumming and the flute notes rise into the atmosphere,
and even if the whole world's harp should burn up,
there will still be hidden instruments playing.

So the candle flickers and goes out.
We have a piece of flint, and a spark.
This singing art is sea foam.
The graceful movements come from a pearl
somewhere on the ocean floor.
Poems reach up like spindrift and the
edge of driftwood along the beach, wanting!
They derive from a slow and powerful root that we can't see.
Stop the words now.
Open the window in the center of your chest,
and let the spirits fly in and out.
-Rumi

and another....

There is a community of the spirit.
Join it, and feel the delight
of walking in the noisy street
and being the noise.

Drink all your passion,
and be a disgrace.

Close both eyes
to see with the other eye.

Open your hands,
if you want to be held.

Sit down in the circle.

Quit acting like a wolf, and feel
the shepherd's love filling you.

At night, your beloved wanders.
Don't accept consolations.

Close your mouth against food.
Taste the lover's mouth in yours.

You moan, "She left me." "He left me."
Twenty more will come.

Be empty of worrying.
Think of who created thought!

Why do you stay in prison
when the door is so wide open?

Move outside the tangle of fear-thinking.
Live in silence.

Flow down and down in always
widening rings of being.

In Times of War: Ray Parker's Story

"WW II veterans", the letter accompanying the DVD tells me, "are dying at a rate of over 2,000 every day, and we feel it is very important to get their personal stories before they are lost to us forever." This film is one of those stories, and will be playing next friday as part of the Ojai Film Festival.

now, i'm not an objective reviewer...so i think it's important to describe the lens through which i'm seeing this: i'm 27 turns around the sun, and my Pearl Harbor was the World Trade Center. i'm also a peace activist and i believe as Benjamin Franklin did: that there never was a good war (or a bad peace). the whole "just" or "necessary" war thing is frankly lost on me. when i read the film's description, which describes the "incredible journey" of the 18-year-old Parker who enlisted to "serve his country and fight the forces of evil" and shares his "hope, fear, and unrelenting courage", i became cynically prepared for a Sousa-march-littered tale of romanticized war. Twenty-eight minutes later, i was teary-eyed.

The opening frames of "In Times of War" educate me that over 16 million Americans served in the U.S. military during World War II. This blows me away immediately, because i cannot imagine so many troops. as an 18-year old "copy boy" at the L.A. Examiner, news of the Japanese attack on December 7th, 1941 prompted only one question from young Ray Parker: Where's Pearl Harbor? He enlisted the very next day, and it's not til the very end of the film that we learn why: "I was enlisting because I believed in the America that FDR had fashioned. He created the America that I felt loyal to. He created the country that Lincoln was talking about...with government Of the People, By the People, For the People." That America, to him, was worth fighting for.

Now at 84 years old, Ray's voice and memory are strong and clear about his experiences in war. To me, it seems a story of ingenuity more than anything else as we are treated to one anecdote after another about making lamps, newspapers, radios, and booze out of next to nothing in the German prison camp where Ray spent 14 months. He became editor of the underground newspaper, POW WOW, which was compiled by reading the German newspapers they were given and listening to contraband BBC via the nail-and-wire wall radio they'd constructed in secret. the news was transcribed onto toilet paper and transported inside a gear-less watch or tucked into someone's cheek. i'm saddened to consider the astonishing depth of human creativity and courage being accessed only out of such desperation for connection and information, and being employed to create the wars that beget such desperation in the first place.

Ray speaks passionately about his initial capture, during which a German private was scolded by his sergeant for punching a prisoner of war. When they realized Ray was answering their questions in German (which he'd studied in high school, in addition to having German grandparents), they asked - appropriately enough - why he was fighting against Germany. His gave the good-soldier answer: "Roosevelt made me do it!", which he says satisfied them because he was "just another poor sucker, stuck in the war like they were." i bristle at this unempowered, nonresponsible answer, but i have to acknowledge it as the prevailing logic (excuse?) of the time...too much of which continues to exist today despite the growing social awareness of our individual complicity in everything our government does in our names. not-so-strangely, "Hitler made me do it" was essentially the excuse given by Nazi war criminals for the horrendous acts they carried out.

as Ray and others were being transported by rail to the prison camp Stalag Luft 1, they took shelter as one train station was bombed. when they emerged from the shelter to "hell on earth", the civilians who'd already begun cleaning up and putting out fires noticed their flight clothes and began advancing on them with picks and shovels, thinking they'd just bombed the city. the German sergeant who was escorting them called out to his countrymen "HALT! These men are prisoners of war, and we are responsible for them. We are taking them to a prison camp." [ i note with great interest and romantic yearning that he did NOT say "Help me strip these prisoners naked and pile them into a pyramid." perhaps this was a "just war" after all... ] when the civilians slowed but did not stop, he ordered his men to raise their rifles and commanded "Halt, or we will shoot!". Ray credits this man - this "enemy" - with saving his life, and with being the most honorable man he's ever met. in fact, he says, most German soldiers obeyed the Geneva Conventions...a discipline and respect to which he owes everything:
"I get very upset when Americans talk about cutting corners on the Geneva Convention, because I know what will happen to our men...if I had not been under the Geneva Convention, I would not be here today." aah, good times.

Ray Parker's own recount of the day the war ended is both technically detailed and passionately hopeful, but is tempered by his humanity, which brought home deep traumas from which he only wanted to hide. despite being proud of his role in bringing about victory, he still characterizes his four years at war as "lost". but there are differences between those times and these:

"They were great days. They were days when the country was together. I could wish we could see 'em again."

i'd like to see 'em too, Ray. but i hope it's not war that does it, because a nation united in opposition, hatred, and violence is only creating the frayed edges both inside and out that will eventually untie the whole thing.

"In Times of War: Ray Parker's Story" will screen at 3pm on Friday October 5th at the Ojai Arts Center with "Run Granny Run", a film about a fed-up 94-year-old running for U.S. Senate.

All Politics Is Local

Or: As Ojai Goes, So Goes The World

daily ojai news

The Ojai Valley News reports that a potentially gang-related vandalism and assault incident took place on Tuesday on Santa Ana Road in Oak View, resulting in one arrest.

This comes on the heels of the Ojai Valley community's first major International Peace Day celebration, convened by the Retreats of Ojai, the Ojai Peace Coalition, and the Ojai Interfaith Alliance and titled "Living Peace in Ojai". The weekend-long event included the awarding of the first-ever Noble Peace Prize to local activists Clive and Marion Leeman, performance of the nation-traveling play "The Gift of Peace" which explores and urges support for the creation of a U.S. Department of Peace, and a well-attended and inspirational interspiritual gathering.

The Peace Alliance's campaign to establish a Cabinet-level Department of Peace - which holds "Effectively treat and dismantle gang psychology" as one of its foundational efforts - is led by Ohio Congressman and Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich, who was in Ojai over the weekend for two appearances. At the Ojai Retreat on Sunday afternoon, Dennis outlined his philosophy of "Strength Through Peace" to over 100 local supporters. Later that evening at the Glen Muse estate on Libbey Ave, a more informal gathering left many feeling uplifted and hopeful for the Kucinich's new post-election home.

MORE after the jump!

The White House will soon see a $23 billion package that contains a nation's-worth of water- and flood-control projects, one of which is the $144.5 million removal of the Matilija Dam. President Bush has threatened to veto the bill because it's expensive. Meanwhile, war costs us $259 million every day.

War is the subject, or at least a main character, in no less than four (and as many as six) of the over 50 feature films, shorts, and videos in this year's Ojai Film Festival, which runs from October 4th through 7th with screenings at Libbey Bowl, the Ojai Arts Center, Matilija Junior High School, and the Ojai Playhouse. Brief descriptions of the films are HERE, and the schedule is HERE.

PET PSYCHIC INTERVIEW WITH PIT BULL DAISY MAE

 Videos, Movies, Pet Profiles, Dogster

What is it like being a Pit Bull?

"I truly like being a pit bull, but not always. When I was in the shelter, I heard someone saying that all dogs like me will bite. I would never bite. They also say that shelters put us to death more than any other breed. I don’t know if that is true but that scared me.

I like my body because I feel strong even when I am shy inside."

Do you think people treat you differently because you are a Pit Bull?

“Oh, yes. Most people have fearful eyes when they look at me. I use to get scared when

scoring%20another%20hug-at.jpg I saw their eyes get frightened. I use to think there was something scary behind me. Then I figured out it is me they are scared of. Both my mom (person) and I think that people are silly. So my person picks me up and holds me upside down and almost immediately people smile. I love to make people smile. It is amazing how an upside down dog can bring so much joy.”

Have you heard that some people like to watch your breed fright with one another?

"Oh yes, I have heard this and this is a terrible thing. I think that those dogs that fight have had the love beaten out of them and they are trying to protect themselves. That is the only reason a Pit Bull would fight like that. I hope that God fills those dogs up with so much love they never feel pain again. I hope that in death they find peace."

Anything you want to tell your mom?

"There is an old lady who we go and see. I think we should see her again soon. I am scared she is going to die. Sometimes she doesn’t remember us, though when she pets me something goes off in her mind. I think that she needs us.

Just tell my mom I love her and she can hear me like you do and that I understand everything she says. Sometimes I think about what my life would be like if I have not met her. I would probably be scared and stupid. I am so glad my mom came and got me. She is a gift to me. Do you believe God gives us gifts of friendships that last forever? Because, I don’t think that it is just luck. If so I am so lucky."

Anything you would like to tell people about Pit Bulls?

"I want to tell people that by nature we are a very compassionate breed. We like to work for our people and we love to play a lot. I know people are scared of our teeth and that we have a big mouth. But I don’t like to chew on things that are hard. I can’t imagine biting a person. That would be hurtful. I have people and dog friends of all ages. I want to lick them, but I don’t want to get them dirty. I think every Pit Bull on some level knows that people are scared of us. I want people to know that if you take in a Pit Bull from a shelter they will probably love you and be more loyal then any other breed. We know it is only special people who are willing to walk around with someone who has so much hatred directed towards them. I want to tell people to get to know us. If they like laughter they would like us."

The Schools of Ojai

When we count our blessings as a community, something that we may take for granted is that we might live in the richest educational environment anywhere in the State. To begin with, we have an above average public school system with a number of campuses which each seem to have their unique strengths. Add to that nearly two dozen private pre-school and elementary schools, teaching across the spectrum of philosophies and special needs.

Many do not realize that Ojai boasts a greater number of private boarding schools than any other town in the state.
Thacher, Villanova, Ojai Valley School , Happy Valley (recently reincarnated as Besant Hill) and Oak Grove all bring students and families to town, but also offer viable alternatives for Ojai families and students of every need. Laurel Springs , educating several thousand students, is by far the largest school in the valley. Although it serves families from all over the country, many local kids attend as well. Of course we also have schools for adults like Krotona, and a number of other options a short drive out of the valley. I simply cannot imagine another community with so many educational alternatives.

It is also important to note that few of these schools could exist without substantial support in terms of volunteerism and donations from community families. I know from experience that tuition never covers the real costs of a school, so parents organize bake sales, book sales, auctions, and special events. They sell cookies and lemonade at half-time, they volunteer to read, supervise, drive, and sometimes teach. They donate to the annual fund, scholarshp funds, and building funds.

Schools in fact bring us together. We attend the games and plays and concerts. For those of us with kids, our social lives often evolve around their schools and the families of their school friends. Today at lunch, I ran into a group of homeschool Moms, kids spread around them like petals, who have clearly formed their own community. The fact is that schools promote and sustain community. They are more than a place to store our kids for the day. They are community centers, centers of information and communication as well as education.

We are lucky to have the many schools that we do and they could not be sustained without the support of the larger community. Additionally, some of the finest people I know in this valley are teachers, such as the recently honored Clive and Marion Leeman, people whose lives are animated by dedication and principle.

So this post is nothing more than a tip of the hat to the schools of Ojai and to the parents who support them and the teachers who work in them. We are a better community because of each.

Dennis and Elizabeth Kucinich at the Ojai Retreat

It's not everyday that a Presidential Candidate visits Ojai! The main room of the Ojai Retreat was filled to overflowing with the green, peace loving citizens of the Ojai Valley, members of the press, including Ojai Post authors Sally Carless, Evan Austin, Dennis Leary (a frequent contributor) and myself. I can tell you this: All my doubts about who to vote for in the primary election have flown out the window. Dennis is my main man! All you short men who worry that tall women look down on you can breathe a sigh of relief. Dennis Kucinich is living proof that if you are a fully realized human being your physical stature does not matter.

While I am still fiddling with the first draft of my experience this afternoon, my friend David Moody wrote the following description of the event:

Dennis Kucinich and his wife Elizabeth came to Ojai today and spoke at the Ojai Retreat. Dennis and Elizabeth have to be mentioned simultaneously, because they appeared together, and functioned as a unit, although Dennis was by far the main speaker.

Elizabeth is about half a head taller than Dennis, and is gorgeous beyond description. She has stunningly beautiful blue almond eyes, long red hair, and a fetching figure as well. And she has some impressive credentials, including degrees from English universities, and involvement in several humanitarian organizations and causes. She and Dennis sat together holding hands while he was being introduced.

Kucinich spoke for ten or fifteen minutes before fielding questions from the audience. His theme was world peace, and he began by invoking the beauty of Ojai, and the importance of harmony with nature, in the endeavor to bring about peace. He quoted Thomas Berry, Wordsworth, Shelley, Tenneyson, and Eliot, as he wove together the ideas of oneness and universal order.

As impressive as this was, it paled in comparison to the performance he put on during the ninety-minute question and answer session that followed. He fielded topics from every angle with insight, compassion, and experience informed by a life in public office. He marvelled at the audacity of the candidates for President who claimed they were misled about the war in Iraq. Don't they have the street smarts yet, he asked, to know when they are being conned?

As the occasion warranted, he deferred to Elizabeth to supplement his answers. She was pleasing to listen to, as well as well-informed. She added interesting commentary to subjects as diverse as health care and the national banking and monetary system.

What I found most remarkable was the contrast between the person I observed in action, and the fragmentary perspective offered by the public debates. There Kucinich is limited to the occasional sound-bite
of thirty or sixty seconds. This is like asking an eagle to demonstrate his flying prowess in the confines of a living room. When Kucinich is allowed to stretch his wings and show what he is capable of, another dimension emerges entirely.

Can Kucinich be elected President? It would probably take a miracle. He only asks this: "It is better to vote for the person you want and to lose, than to vote for the person you don't want and to win." If we all follow that prescription,, I believe he has a fighting chance.

Ojai Peace Coalition Awards First-Ever Noble Peace Prize

Last night was the opening ceremonies of the Living Peace in Ojai weekend, which were all moved to the Chaparral Auditorium due to the rain. Despite inclement weather and last-minute venue change, around 100 people showed up to celebrate the International Day of Peace and to welcome the weekend's activities.

We had all the things that make a great event: improvisation, technical trouble, unanticipated weather...
and yet, it was clearly where people wanted to be:
• when i gently ended our two minutes of candle-lit silence with a Mother Theresa quote and invited people to a brief intermission while we set up for the film, nobody moved for several more minutes. Many continued with their eyes closed as Alitta and Joss' harmonic music soothed us.
• when setting up for the film took something like 40 minutes rather than the 10 i'd intended and announced, people not only stayed but jumped right up to help make it happen.

WATCH video of the awarding of the Noble Peace Prize to Clive and Marion Leeman and the Ojai Peace Vigil.

This evening's activities have also been moved to the Chaparral auditorium. Jonathan McEuen will begin playing any minute now (it's 5:20pm at the time of posting) for an hour, followed by The Peace Alliance's presentation of The Gift of Peace play at 7pm. Tony Khalife and his live world music band will perform after the play.

Tomorrow morning's interspiritual ceremonies and services are still planned for Libbey Bowl starting at 6:30am, but keep an eye on this page and the event website for location updates.

A-Box. These “Intestinal Cleanse” formulas are found all over the internet, on late night TV, at “health food stores” and increasingly at the local drug store. They promise great rewards through little effort. I have huge concerns about the efficacy and safety of these products.

Before you decide to purchase or take a cleansing product, please consider the following factors carefully. I know that many alternative health care practitioners advocate these products. I do not feel that they are safe or valuable for you and I want you to understand why.

Check the ingredient lists. Look for Senna, Cascara Sagrada and Psyllium.
Psyllium is a dietary fiber commonly used to improve bowel regularity. It serves this function well, although I prefer flax fiber which I feel is less likely to cause gas. However, psyllium is very inexpensive. Don’t pay a high price for a “cleanse” that is mostly inexpensive psyllium.

Senna and Cascara Sagrada are potent herbal laxatives. All the medical studies I’ve read say that it is unsafe to take either for more than seven days in a row. They can be habit-forming even in a very short time. These products work by irritating the intestinal lining. Cleansing by irritating? I don’t think that is a good idea.

These “cleanses” promise dramatic results. We see all kinds of sensational, tabloid-style advertising about the weight we can lose by eliminating pounds of waste we are carrying around and the miles of “black snakes” or “mucosal plaque” you can eliminate. Recognize that these are advertising ploys. Senna and Cascara Sagrada are laxatives that can cause you to have a runny stool – much of the weight you are losing may be water your body shouldn’t be losing. Taking some pills and tinctures may lead to some weight loss, but that you are likely to gain most of it back when you return to normal eating and stop taking the product.

Here’s the technical bit that makes me wonder about the black snakes: medical studies show that use of senna or cascara sagrada can stain the internal lining of the large intestine black. Use of senna and cascara sagrada can cause over-production of mucus, which is protective of the delicate internal tissue. Put the two together. Sounds like black, tarry mucus to me. I have not found a single medical study verifying the existence of mucoid plaque in normal individuals. Is it possible that these expensive “cleanses” actually create the “snakes” they claim to eliminate from the body?

So what to do? I suggest a dietary solution, a dietary cleanse that continues to nourish your body without irritation. You can cut back on calories, take in large quantities of fiber, have a few colonics, replenish your good bacteria with Probiotics and feel as fantastic as all these glossy, well-marketed “cleanses” say you’ll feel. Safely.

Crashing the Voldemorti (Who Crashed Mother Earth ...)

the end of the moldy-Volde-ThingY?

the US has until now been consuming ~*~ EIGHTY PERCENT OF THE ENTIRE WORLD'S ANNUAL SAVINGS ~*~ but that, this, World has announced an end to that, this (our consumer) tyranny ...

that Company Voldemorti !

for the benefit of the youth and students in our Ojai
audience, those who will have been brought up in the Ojai
Valley 'News Speak' -- without benefit of truth or sincerity
on the part of their dis-educators' -- I am going to attempt
a full background on the economic crisis confronting the US,
Europe, and the World at this time.

parts of this you will know, from reading previous OjaiPost
reports, or following the increasingly emotional dialog in
the media and amongst our families and friends -- as to the
down-spiralling US Dollar, the 'Falling Treasurys', rising
Gold prices, exponentially expanding Derivatives monster,
the 'Sub-prime Loan Crisis', the China Gauntlet, and
Private Banking and the Debt-Based Monetary System.

when I was an Ojai youth, in the fifties & sixties, it was
still largely true that "money in the bank" came from gold
and commodities, or at least was backed by cash, paper
money. the tens of trillions of dollars of debt did not
then exist, and a global military police state was not
required to maintain the flow of wood and food and minerals
and products to North America. [ten times our share of the
world's products, mind you.]

the 'US' had conquered a world (under covert direction of
global bankers) with its automobile & aircraft factories,
and nuclear bomb, and demanded the lowest prices on food
and oil, everything, nearly worldwide. nations who did not
agree, disappeared in intelligence wars, then miraculously
re-appeared as ally nations who had signed away all their
minerals and other riches to US corporations, for pennies
on the dollar.

as to worldbanking or economic theory, in order to make
a US population 'happy' (voting), believing the Voldemorti
newspeak, supporting the wars -- LOTS of money needed to
find its way into the hands of US citizen-slaves in order
to pay for all of the world's product we 'needed' to buy,
to keep us fatdumb'nhappy while whoring for the corporate
machine killing Mother Earth, greasing the military-aero-
space production lines maintaining the third world in a
lower pecking rung of servitude.

the result was Debt-Based Banking, what we have today.

Debt-based_monetary_system

money was created out of thin air, by the loan contracts
that the US public signed to buy their land and houses and
cars. and for their college educations. banks were only
required by the US government and the Federal Reserve to
back their accounts with the loan statements from the
borrowers. that is, a bank with only a million or a billion
dollars actual gold or cash in the vault, could lend out
ten million or ten billion dollars, by placing YOUR loan
contract in the bank vault. thus when you borrowed ten
thousand dollars for a car, or a hundred thousand dollars
for a home, the bank simply added ten thousand dollars or a
hundred thousand dollars to its bank account ledgers.

there actually was NO CASH or GOLD or other valuables
in the vaults.

for the last several decades 90 percent of the cash put
into circulation in the Western world has been simply
materialized out of thin air, by the keystrokes on the
computer creating the money in the bank computers. the
money never existed. [backed only the LOANS made by the
banks to the corporations and consumers, and by constant
flow of world cash to purchase of US Treasury Bonds.]

as of last week:

"The US currency has now fallen more than 2 per cent
against the euro in the last week, dropping to a low of
$1.3910 against the single currency, breaching the previous
record low of $1.3852 it hit on July 24. Meanwhile, the
dollar index, which tracks its value against a basket of
six leading currencies, fell to 79.404, its lowest level
since September 1992."

"INVESTORS ALL OVER the world are collectively holding
their breath, waiting to see if the Federal Reserve lowers
interest rates at its September 18 meeting. They are also
looking toward investment bank earnings, specifically Bear
Stearns, Lehman Brothers and Goldman Sachs which will soon
post quarterly results, to get a better sense of just how
very bad the subprime crisis is. While they wait, many
investors are taking advantage of the accelerating chaos by
selling Derivatives calls and puts."

enter Bush1, Clinton, Gore, Bush2, Cheney at al and Gold!

Al+Gore+Clinton+Federal+Reserve+Gold+Price+Antitrust+Reginald+Howe

nearly twenty years ago the Financial powers that be --
centering around Washington DC but including London and all
the European, Japanese and Israeli banking powers --
determined to use a well-known covert financial mechanism
to keep this monetary elephant of the industrial-state
afloat. That mechanism is known as gold price suppression.
that is, if the world governments and media PRETEND that
the market is free -- and PRETEND that gold and prices are
free to rise and all, and PRETEND people actually make
capital gains by putting their money and pensions into
banks and mutual funds etc -- while the price of gold is
actually secretly suppressed, held down by the western
banks and governments, then the OTHER currencies and
economies of the world, as in China, Africa, Latin
American, the Middle East, Eastern Europe will be
depressed, crushed. Their currencies and economies will
always drop, while the western computer-manipulated
economies go up.

thus the monetary scam launched during the Clinton/Gore
administration so long ago now, which evolved into the 9/11
StockPlay in 2001. the "Company's" 9/11 StockPlay ended the
epic-making Global Antitrust suit by Reginald Howe:

Reginald+Howe+Gold+Adam+Hamilton+Derivatives+JP+Morgan

by bringing down fifty floors of evidence, the offices of
JP Morgan Chase which organized the 9/11 Derivatives Market
Crash and Gold Price Fixing scams.

at that time, Gold which had been held down to about $275
an ounce, was now free to rise -- to the Wednesday,
September 12, 2007 price of $706.00 !!

Millennium Twain

Paraphrased from "Gerald T. Agnew", In EnergyResources:

There are two schools of thought on the US money crisis. In
a normal world, a country with a horrendous debt problem
would crunch its economy (to stifle demand) and raise
interest rates to get the capital to keep it afloat. The
alternative would be to let its currency (the US Dollar) go
to the devil and that would raise the price of imports to
the point where purchasing would stop. At the same time,
exports would become cheaper and more competitive and hence
(yet again!) draw (weaker & weaker) money into the US.

This wonderful, and naive, theory was the norm until a
generation or so ago ... [Now money is generated on the
bank ledgers in the forms of loans, and is no longer based
on gold or cash or assets.]

We are at the Dollar-depreciation point today. Lowering the
value of the USD would be done by lowering interest rates --
as the US CURRENTLY CONSUMES 80-100% OF THE
WORLD'S SAVINGS just to cover its wanton spending,
consumer consumption!

If Europe were to garner maybe 10% of that amount (to
develop Eastern Europe for example), then this tiny change
would cause a mammoth hit on the USD. The Dollar would no
longer attract the funds it needs in the tremendous volumes
it requires. End of [US] story! Classical theory, outlined
above, would seemingly demand this.

These days, this may not necessarily be so. In the age of
planetwide servitude, citizen-victim obediance, anything
goes. In other words, if the Fed lowers interest rates,
then the drumbeat (newspeak, propaganda) will be that cash
MUST continue to come to the US at any cost. Because if it
does not, then the US will have a balance of payments
crisis which will (thank you globalisation! ) immediately
impact the rest of the world in the most frightening way.
[Cause a global market crash.] Media propaganda to keep
this fantasy daisychain going is if the world continues
buying US Treasuries while the Fed cuts interest rates,
then the global investors would make large capital gains
on the bonds as their prices increase. Hear the laughter
meter topping out?

The entire stock market will also be advertised as "on
sale", claiming lower interest rates mean stronger
equities. Companies that trade overseas in large volumes
(ie Coca- Cola, Microsoft, IBM, John Deere etc.,) will
have large earnings because of the weakened USD and thus
must be a magnet for [compulsory] investments from
overseas. [The laughter meter just broke.]

Things are therefore not as clear as they once were --
"Skim milk is masquerading as cream".

To try and sum this up, a policy of lowering interest rates
by the US Federal Reserve would be accompanied by a barrage
of financial nonsense extolling the virtues of investing in
the "new US economy" facade. The dollar would sink for many
years ... not crash overnight, if we are lucky.

This is what Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson wants right
now, a lower USD especially against the Yen and Chinese
Renmimbi/Yuan. The Treasury will claim it does not want a
Stock Market Crash right now as that would stop the flow of
funds to NY. The truth is, that either way, Stock Market
Crash or no, the US economy will collapse without a more
than impossible expansion of current intelligence agency
and military enforced global investment programs.

Whether they stage another hard 9/11 Crash, or a 'soft'
quarterly-earnings-report crash -- America's economic
future AFTER this September 2007 will require an equally
impossible increase in the global security state control of
Eastern Europe, China, Asia, Latin America, Africa and the
Middle East. The slaves would have to become MORE poor and
numerous, and their countrysides MORE productive and
liquid. The thought would never be entertained, as China is
now the world's greatest economic power, and is committed
to leveling the world economy, which means collapsing the
US Mega-Bubble. Even if China WISHED to continue to work for
pennies, it too is a physical impossibility -- with over
a hundred million of their work population being prisoners
and homeless migrants, and with 95 percent of the world's
ecological/bio-resource base wiped out. The forests and
rainforests, rivers and wetlands, oceans and life, no
longer EXIST to be plundered.

China, like the rest of the world, will no longer accept
any predation from Europe and the US ... THEIR populations
are now at the point of revolt too ... with no more room
left to maneuver. No more food to eat, no more air to
breath. No more love to share ...

There’s No Formula That Fits Ojai

I've got to admit that when I read the agenda item for the joint Planning Commission/City Council meeting scheduled for Wednesday, I was a little disappointed. The staff recommendation simply reads, "determine the specific purpose of an ordinance regulating formula businesses."

In the most recent draft submitted by City Staff, the purpose was to "regulate the location and design of formula retail and restaurant establishments in order to maintain the tourist attracting small town character of the City, the diversity of the community's unique commercial areas and quality of life for visitors and residents." The Citizen Initiative purpose was similar and read, "regulate the location and operation of formula retail and restaurant establishments in order to maintain the city's unique historic and rural character, the diversity and vitality of the community's commercial districts, tourism, and the quality of life for Ojai residents."

These both sound pretty good to me, so I'm not completely sure why we are taking this step back. Despite my uncertainty, it is an important discussion and I hope you can come voice you opinion on Wednesday. Come add your voice to the dozens who have already spoken and to the 20-plus hours of public discussion that has already occurred over the past 18-months. Below you will find some aspects brought to us by another community that successfully passed an ordinance.

It’s about a commitment to local business:
Limits on formula businesses will encourage even more entrepreneurs to invest. Homegrown business keeps more dollars circulating in the local economy – three times more!

It’s about vision:
In ten years, do we want Ojai to look like every other city? Is homogenization a ‘formula’ for long term success and prosperity? Will Ojai’s growth be guided with intention, or left to happenstance?

It’s about balance:
Ojai should include a mix of businesses. Formula businesses can take over if expansion is unchecked.

It’s about Ojai’s economic future:
Homegrown businesses create more jobs locally and expand the tax base. Communities with fewer formula businesses have lower rates of crime and poverty as well as higher rates of civic participation.

It’s about diversity:
Diversity of every kind makes Ojai great. Homogenization spells the end of Ojai’s draw as a place to live, work, and recreate. Homegrown businesses offer products tailored to local demand, not a national sales plan.

It’s legal and not uncommon:
Formula restrictions are legal and have been upheld in court. As towns strive to protect their community businesses, dozens across the country have passed or are considering restrictions on formula businesses.

It’s about common sense:
Limiting formula food and retail nurtures and protects Ojai’s unique and independent character.

OJAI: KEEP IT REAL
Help Protect Ojai’s Unique and Independent Character
Limit Formula Food and Retail in Ojai.

Meeting on Wednesday, September 19 at 7:30pm. Ojai City Hall.

Slow Growth, the Environment, Chain Stores, and Economics

Is Bill McKibbon correct when he argues in his new book, Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future, that the world doesn't have enough natural resources to sustain endless economic growth? He is certainly "challenging the prevailing wisdom that the goal of economies should be unlimited growth." The reason I bring this up is because Ojai is grappling with idea of limiting formula business and I see it relating directly to our long history in Ojai of slow growth and our concern for the environment. Chain stores are an environmental concern. Chain stores relate directly to slow growth.. Come tell the joint Planning Commission/City Council meeting on Wednesday, September 19 what you think. It starts at 7:30pm at Ojai City Hall.

The business person will have concerns about economics and growth and limiting a certain type of business. To that person I suggest reading some of the studies and other articles done on the topic. While there are at least a dozen books on the topic, most of us do not have the time to read all the books. Therefore, I have listed two recent studies and two brief articles on the topic.

San Francisco Retail Diversity Study
This three-part study, released in May 2007, calculates the market share of independents and chains in several categories: book, sporting goods, and toy stores, and casual dining restaurants. The study's second section analyzes the impact on San Francisco's economy of shopping at locally owned businesses versus chains. The final -- and perhaps most important -- part examines the impact on the city's economy of a mere 10% shift in resident spending between chains and local businesses and vice versa, quantified in terms of added revenue and jobs to the community. While the numbers are specific to the San Francisco area, a reasonable "translation" can be inferred.

Andersonville Study of Retail Economics
This report, released on October 20, 2004, extends the study done in Austin, Texas in 2003. The study compares 10 independent businesses and 10 chains in retail, restaurant and service sectors. The results further corroborate the local economic benefit of independent businesses, demonstrating that independents generate about 3 times the local economic activity as chains. Further, the researchers make the case for community governments to create policy to protect their independent businesses.

American Independent Business Alliance. A brief article on the "Benefits of Doing Business Locally."

Mainstreet News The Monthly Journal of the National Trust's National Mainstreet Center . Article from a 2004 newsletter on "Protecting Locally Owned Retail: Planning tools for curbing chains and nurturing homegrown businesses." by Stacy Mitchell

How the Food Industry is Deceiving You

This terrific online five-part video series by Peter Jennings explores how the food industry spends billions of dollars to sabotage your health.

Jennings also takes a critical look at our government's agricultural subsidy programs, and their unintended consequences on your nutritional choices and health. For example, sugar and fat receive 20 times more government farming subsidies than fruits and vegetables. Does this oversupply of fats and sugars, compared to fruits and vegetables, affect your food choices?

Some statistics, implicating both the food industry and the government as co-creating factors in the obesity epidemic, include:

* In 2002, consumers spent $174 billion on processed foods.
* 90 percent of foods marketed each year are processed foods.
* Last year, 2,800 new candies, desserts, ice-cream, and snacks were introduced to the marketplace, compared to 230 new fruits or vegetable products.
* The food industry spends $34 billion per year marketing their products.
* $12 billion is spent marketing to children.

The food industry is quick to point out that the choice is always yours (and it is, yet it is more difficult to make informed choices when the spin doctors are influencing the mass decisions, especially if you're a child)-- they're not making you buy something you don't want. They also want to blame the obesity problem on people's unwillingness to exercise.

"No Flights Available" to New York City Sept. 13-15 -- El Al Israel Airlines

Jock Doubleday was suspended as an author in October 2008. Despite his claims of censorship, none of his posts have been removed.

Screen Shot from El Al Website:

Try to get a flight to New York from Tel Aviv on the 13th, 14th, or 15th.
http://elal.com/ELAL/English/States/General

You can't -- not because flights are full, but because there are no flights. To double-check, I went to Orbitz and checked all flights from Tel Aviv to New York City for these dates:

Sept. 13, 2007
Sept. 14, 2007
Sept. 15, 2007

There are no El Al flights from Tel Aviv to New York City on these dates.

El Al's flight blackout timing dovetails with the upcoming September 14, 2007 stand-down of all U.S. Air Force jets. This full-day stand-down is allegedly for a "review" of all Air Force jet procedures. This "review" was sparked by the recent supposed mishandling of nuclear weapons by the U.S. Air Force.

And then there are the recent billion-dollar "put options" placed by anonymous persons who are betting that the DJ Eurostoxx 50 will plunge by at least 30% by the end of this month.

Something -- what I call "the new 9/11" -- is going to happen on September 14, 2007.

Take care. And tell your friends in New York City to beware U.S. government-sponsored (i.e., Zionist-sponsored) terrorism this September 14, 2007.

Jock

P.S. This photo may help to dispel the common notion that the political group whose members call themselves Zionists should be equated with Jews or with Israel.

Stop the Trucks: Overweight Trucks Damage Infrastructure

The Associated Press (AP) released this story today which has immediate applications to Ojai given that Caltrans appears to endorse the concept that Route 150 from Casitas Springs through Ojai to Santa Paula and Route 33 from Cuyama through Ojai to the 101 in Ventura are acceptable truck routes for upwards of 600 - 800 gravel trucks per day. (That's one truck every 3 -5 minutes through Ojai 24/7.)

Some of the highlights are below along with a link to the full, original story:

Overweight Trucks Damage Infrastructure
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

More than a half-million overweight trucks are allowed onto the nation's roads and bridges -- an increasingly routine practice that some officials say is putting dangerous wear and tear on an already groaning infrastructure...

According to a government study, one 40-ton truck does as much damage to the road as 9,600 cars...
Around the country, many transportation officials... express concern that not enough is being spent to repair the damage done by extra-heavy trucks.

As for why they issue overweight-load permits, many state officials said they have no choice -- they are simply carrying out the laws as passed by the legislature....

In the vast majority of cases, a single truck can safely pass over a sound bridge, even if the rig is way over the posted weight limit. But the cumulative effect of stress on the steel and concrete can eventually prove deadly.

Engineers liken the effect of heavy trucks on a bridge to bending a paper clip: It can bend again and again without breaking, but eventually it will snap....

The danger is magnified by a recent federal finding that 18 percent of the nation's bridges either do not have weight limits posted or incorrectly calculated the weight limits that are posted. Also, a federal study last year classified 26 percent of the nation's bridges as either structurally deficient or functionally obsolete...

Public Utilities Commission Streamlines Solar Program

September 7, 2007

San Francisco, CA, USA: California Public Utilities Commission Streamlines Solar Program Requirements

The California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) yesterday approved changes to the California Solar Initiative Program Handbook to speed the application process for solar incentives in California. The California Solar Initiative’s goal is to drive the installation of 3,000 megawatts of high-performing solar installations in the state over the next 10 years, moving the state toward a cleaner energy future.

In January, the new California Solar Initiative program launched and it introduced a number of requirements to obtain

solar incentives in order to ensure meeting the state’s quality and consumer protection goals. Since then, the PUC has been working closely with industry to identify program roll-out issues and solutions. The PUC is closely monitoring the start-up of the program to balance performance requirements against paperwork costs to system owners and installers.

Despite some early concerns from solar installers about the new solar incentive application, which the PUC is addressing today, demand for solar incentives is sharply up in 2007: the California Solar Initiative has received 2,790 applications from January to July, worth 131 megawatts and $406 million in rebate applications.

The streamlining changes approved yesterday were the result of feedback from the solar industry’s early experience with the new program, which launched on January 1, 2007, and these changes are expected to further increase the demand for solar in California.

The PUC has simplified the California Solar Initiative application process in a number of ways, including removing all insurance requirements beyond those required for interconnection, waiving some documentation for smaller systems, and allowing self-installations to receive the California Solar Initiative incentive.

The PUC expects to release a revised California Solar Initiative Program Handbook with the changes in September on www.GoSolarCalifornia.ca.gov and via the PUC California Solar Initiative Proceeding Service list.

“In developing the California Solar Initiative, we take very seriously our responsibility to ratepayers to ensure that their dollars are used wisely. This requires that we implement a program that holds installers and system owners to very high standards,” said PUC President Michael R. Peevey. “We recognize that the simple and expedient payment of rebates is very important for the program, and we work with the solar industry to sharpen a process that can both protect the investment of ratepayers and provide significant financial incentives. The changes approved today are important for the program as we hope to maximize the California Solar Initiative’s ability to facilitate a steady rise in the demand for solar over the next several years.”

Return of Papa Bear?

A September 9, 2007 Stock Market Crash? Or September 11, 2007?

Understanding that many in our audience do not understand the legal gambling known as the Stock Market -- how everything you and your community own, or thought you owned, can be taken from you overnight -- I am posting this intro to Wall Street, on the eve of 9/9/9 as it is called, 9 Sept 2007. (for numerologists, the Year 2007 is represented by the number 9, two plus seven.)

What do you stand to lose?

Your job, your savings, your home, your land ... remember 9/11!

Question) -- for the unskilled, can you explain how derivatives worked in 9/11, and how they were used to leverage takeovers? What is a "put" option and who bought them, is there a compiled list?

Answer) -- simply put -- Bears, ShortSellers and HedgeHogs are the names of the 'Big Boys' or gangsters, those who are above the law, who every few years set up market crashes to steal billions of dollars, and take over trillions of dollars of peoples assets. (every few decades organizing tremendous crashes to take in tens of billions, and takeover tens of trillions.)

some call it legal, but the big events are insider trading, and they currently use Derivatives Contracts. (where you BUY in advance the option or right to buy or sell a stock.)

JP Morgan Chase controls the majority of Derivatives action on Wall Street. in the case of the 9/11 stock play, JP Morgan had placed, bet, $30 Billion dollars at a thousand- to-one leverage, on a GIANT crash. leveraged for taking $30 Trillion of other people's stocks. [that kind of derivatives contract is called a 'Put', right to buy for a low price. the other kind of derivatives contract is called a 'Call', the right to sell for a high price.]

the other banks who bet on 9/11 were Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, Citigroup, and the BIS with the support of the U.S. Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve Board, the New York Federal Reserve Bank, and the SEC (Securities Exchange Commission).

they bet an additional $20 Billion, leveraged to $20 Trillion in takeovers.

this is how the Papa Bears ALWAYS own the media and governments -- they own all the money and the corporations. and will continue to do so, until we show them the GREATER profits of a Global Market of Universal participation and benefit.

what can we do in preparation for 9/9/9 or 9/11/9?

pray.

look to your garden.

ask the 'powers that be' to end this tyranny of economic ignorance and servitude.

Obama to Appear Tomorrow in SB

Tomorrow morning Barack Obama, on his way to a fund-raiser in Goleta, is scheduled to make an appearance at Santa Barbara City College, starting at 10:30. See him speak in the morning and you can save yourself the $2300 you would have had to spend to see him in the evening in Oprah Winfrey's "meadow." -- or the $25,000 you would have had to spend to mingle with him inside. Or the $50,000 you would have had to spend to actually sit down to dinner with him.

But those of us without the big bucks will miss Little Stevie Wonder, who will be performing. Dang.

Remembering Keith Stolz

While making my first 'Subway Means Down' video 4 months ago, I saw Keith Stolz sitting on the bench across from Coffee Roasters. Knowing him to be friendly and considerate, I asked him if he'd like to share his opinion on this fast food operation moving next to Java Joe's. Here's a link to the YouTube video featuring Keith Stolz: YouTube link His segment begins at 1:47.

Go Green: Huge Turnout!

The Ojai Valley Green Coalition put out the call for volunteers this evening at the Go Green: Next Step meeting at Chaparral Auditorium. The response was tremendous, with over 130 citizens coming out to join a committee, buy a t-shirt and contribute to the community they love. Give yourself a big round of applause for being a part of the solution. Our work has just begun.

Shredder Day!

Property tax exclusion for solar energy systems

It is crunch time in the Calfornia Legislature, and there are a couple of critical solar bills in play. Bills are only helpful if they are passed-and we need your help getting them off the legislative playing field and in the office doing some work.
One of the most important bills is AB 1451 (Leno), which extends the current property tax exclusion for solar energy systems to 2016, and clarifies the application to solar on new home construction. AB 1451 makes everything we are trying to do with energy in the state, from AB 32 to the California Solar Initiative to the Renewable Portfolio Standard, both cheaper and easier. It's really a no brainer, which is why the Assembly passed it unanimously. That's right. Not a single no vote.
It's now stuck in the Senate Revenue and Tax Committee. Senator Perata, as the Senate President pro Tem, holds all the cards. He decides what happens next--whether the bill withers on the vine, or moves forward to a Senate floor vote. Please give the Senator a call at (916) 651-4009, and tell him that you support solar, that you believe AB 1451 is sound policy and deserves the consideration of a floor vote. Be polite, be positive--and be persuasive.

Ojai’s First Yogi

Our own Suza Francina gets a really nice profile in the September issue of LA Yoga, which is a print and online publication. Check it out, and maybe Suza can let us know who's presence she is gracing in the photo below. An excerpt...

suza francina ojai first yogiIn the first moments Suza arrived in the valley, known as Southern California’s Shangri-La, she met influential artist Beatrice Wood. Suza attended the Happy Valley School, where classes were cancelled when J. Krishnamurti was speaking, to allow students to participate in another type of education. Suza credits her time listening to the great teacher with giving her courage to always question and never follow an idea or person blindly.

A sense of questioning and curiosity led her to yoga; she watched women traipse with their mats and blankets into her neighbor Sarah Kirton’s living room. Suza joined the class. Inspired, she made a pilgrimage to the B.K.S. Iyengar Institute in San Francisco, where, in 1974, she began the teacher training program with Mary Dunn and Judith Lasater, earning her certification from the institute.

Stop the Trucks: Permit Violations

Kim Rodriguez, Planning Director
County of Ventura
Planning Division
800 South Victoria Ave,
Ventura, CA 93009

Dear Kim Rodriguez:

Please consider this letter my formal complaint regarding C.U.P violations in the operation of gravel trucks in conjunction with the Ozena Valley Sand and Gravel Mine owned and operated by Michael Virgilio of Huntington Beach, California.

Ozena’s violations are on such a massive level, that we believe that their permit should be immediately rescinded.
In the Ozena C.U.P. from 2003, Item #72 specifically set “Days & Hours of Operation.” All project related travel on Highway 33 between Casitas Springs and the City of Ojai (Mon. – Fri) was restricted to 6:00am to 7:00am and from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Total hours of all truck hours through Ojai come to seven hours. On Saturday trucking is limited from 6:00am to 5:00pm, a total of 11 hours.

On Monday, August 14th of this year, I personally witnessed multiple violations of the C.U.P. on at least three separate occasions.

Round One: I was awoken by a gravel truck heading north through Ojai on Route 33 just north of El Roblar at 2:55am. Staying awake for the next two hours I saw four more heading north. Two were of the red and white type that Valley Bulk uses with Ozena. The others were the double hopper dump truck style used by Ortiz Trucking and Cardenas Trucking. My observations of these trucks were later confirmed by John Broesamly of Ojai, who spent the early hours of the morning truck spotting just outside the Ozena facility in Cuyama.

Round Two: Leaving Ojai at 7:00am via Route 33 South on my way to work in Oxnard I saw one loaded truck from Cardenas heading south and spotted three more heading north. Two were Valley Bulk, the other was from Ortiz. These vehicles were all in violation of the next blackout period (7-9am).

Round Three: On my way home from work, I entered Casitas Springs at 3:45pm and spotted one empty truck from Cardenas heading north and saw two more loaded double hopper type trucks heading south. These trucks were of the style used by Ozena in their own website photos which apparently have absolutely no corporate markings on them, a seemingly common practice. These were also during a black out period for Ozena, which is not allowed to ship in either direction through Ojai after 3:00pm on weekdays.

Although these violations were recorded on a single day, in fact they could have been recorded on any single weekend since Route 33 was reopened after the Day Fire.

Despite the fact that since March of 2007, the Ojai “Stop the Trucks” Coalition has sent over 35 public letters and emails to Mr. Ellison and that there have been over 25 news stories about the gravel truck situation, the department has apparently informed Supervisor Bennett that there has only been one complaint against Ozena last year and that is was supposedly investigated.

These news stories have appeared in the LA Times, the Ventura County Star, the Ojai Valley News, the Pacific Coast Business Times, the Ventura Reporter, the Santa Barbara News Press, the Santa Barbara Independent,; and the Santa Maria Times. Additionally the Ventura Planning Department staff was sent copies of over 350 letters complaining about trucks that were originally sent to the Santa Barbara Planning Commission along with a copy of an Ojai City Council meeting in January of 2007 in which dozens of citizens complained about truck operations.

That any intelligent public employee would consider Ozena’s violations non-existent, minimal or a non-issue, is too ludicrous to be given any credibility at all. That, we the citizens of the Ojai Valley are forced to do the monitoring of a permit issued by the County, also borders on the absurd.

The constant violation of the hours of trucking has created an intolerable situation for the residents of the Ojai Valley. It has increased the not only the number and hours of trucking, but has potentially increased air pollution and noise pollution; diminished the quality of life and property values of all those who live along the Route 33 corridor; increased the odds of accidents on all stretches of Route 33; perhaps inflated the profits of Mr. Virgilio and possible others and opened up the County to civil liability lawsuits.

Further, the Ozena mining operation is now in ongoing and massive violation of their C.U.P. for regularly running trucks at hours outside the limits. There exists no reason for them to even be in business now while they are awaiting the EIR process. Given the enormity of their violations it is inappropriate that they would even be considered for a new C.U.P.

I respectfully ask you to investigate this matter and to take appropriate actions that lead to a termination of the Ozena C.U.P.

Sincerely,
Howard Smith

VICTOR KEITH STOLZ 5.6.61 - 8.16.07

Keith (or Keiter) was born in Ventura and lived most of his life here in the Ojai Valley. On Thursday, August 16, 2007, he was found dead outside the Ojai Library. He was 46 years old.

I am writing this in remembrance of my friend Keith Stolz. I met him about six years ago. I would walk the bike path with my two dogs in the early morning. We would meet him half way through. Sometimes Keith would walk with us and other times we would just stop to say hi. I have many stories in my memory about how kind and compassionate Keith was. I would like to share two of them.

A while back, I was going through some traumatic times. Keith saw me one day crying. He shared some sweet words and I went on my way. The next morning, there was a little white heart shaped rock in the palm of my St. Francis statue. I cannot put in to words how much light that little stone brought into my life. I collected heart shaped rocks and I could not think of a soul who would have put it there. My life was full of darkness and every time I saw it I smiled. I swore an angel had placed it there. Weeks went by and Keith stopped by for a visit. It was then he shared that he had carved the heart out of an alabaster stone and placed it there on his way to church. St. Francis has held that rock for the last two and half years.
It was rare that Keith would ask me for anything. One evening, he showed up at my house with tears in his eyes. He said that a car had hit Jeff, his best friend, and he didn’t know if he was alive. I told him to get in the car and we would go find which hospital he was at. When we found Jeff, Keith embraced him with such love that I was in awe. It was so endearing. I had to ask myself, “Do I have a best friend that would be so genuine, compassionate, and upset if I was hurt?”

When I first heard of Keith's death, I was not surprised. I was grateful that his spirit left his body at the library and not someplace else. It was my understanding that Keith had been in and out of the hospital for heart and liver problems for many months. For the last two months, every time I saw him I was worried it was going to be the last. One of the last times I saw him, he told me he was dying. I hugged him and told him I loved him and was worried about him. He replied, “Oh honey, don’t worry about me. I can’t wait to go fishing with Jesus”.

He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Sandy and Bob Smith and Kristina Thom; great-nephew Jerry Don Drury; and many other friends in Ojai, who were also his family.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Jean Stolz, who worked for many years at Grey Gables of Ojai; his brother, Randy McGahey of Coverdale, Calif.; and his grandparents MoMo and PaPa Stark.

Kathrina Smith said (on The Ojai News blog)... http://ojaivalleynews.blogspot.com/2007/08/remembering-keith.html
Keith Stolz is my uncle and a very loved part of our family. He was a gentle kind soul and a very talented carpenter. He loved to work with his hands and to be out doors. We grew up together in the Ojai Valley and he always thought of it as his home. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. I and his family would like to say thank you to the community for your kind words and well wishes at such a difficult time. Sweat Dreams Uncle Keith. You are always in our hearts. Soar with the angels and may God Bless You and keep you.

Keith was also referred to as “a good hearted guy who showed up for work when he said he would”, “always kind…and had an unselfish heart”.

Keith Stolz was my friend and an angel on earth. I miss him greatly. Sending love and blessings to his family and friends and may Keith and Jesus catch some mighty fish.

Open for Discussion

"It is high time to ask whether it is really any scandal, any deplorable inconsistency, for a human being to be both angel and animal with equal devotion... Not to cherish both the angel and the animal, both the spirit and the flesh, is to renounce the whole interest and greatness of being human, and it is really tragic that those in whom the two natures are equally strong should be made to feel in conflict with themselves. For the saint-sinner and the mystic-sensualist is always the most interesting type of human being because he is the most complete. When the two aspects are seen to be consistent with each other, there is a real sense in which spirit transforms nature: that is to say, the animality of the mystic is always richer, more refined, and more subtly sensuous than the animality of the merely animal man."
