Zaca Fire Update
The Zaca Fire in Santa Barbara County dumped a bunch of ash on the Ojai Valley yesterday. The Ventura County Fire Dept. has issued this statement (hat tip to reader Kate):
Update on Zaca Fire
VCFD is currently in communication with the Zaca Fire Officials. The Zaca fire is approximately 16 miles away from the Ventura County Line. There is no threat to Ventura County Citizens, although some smoke will be visible to citizens living on the North Western side of Ventura County. Any further information regarding this incident will be promptly posted on the Ventura County Fire Department website.
Inciweb shows 44,000 acres burned, 60% containment and an estimated containment date of September 7.

And yes tyler, thanks for the photo. fires and particulate matter make for lovely sunsets. As I mentioned, we dined at the Chicago Rib Factory porch yesterday evening and had ashes lightly raining on our table. Like Christmas but not. Fire Christmas.

Article in yesterday's San Francisco Chronicle called New run feared as Calif. wildfire gains strength.

In the article, it is mentioned that the area burning has not burned in over a hundred years. This is probably a result from Man's interference in nature's natural overgrowth abatement process. Had this area been allowed to burn when other fires occurred in the region, the fire of today would not be the feared threat as it is now. I certainly hope no homes are lost, and that these same home owners were smart in abating all the brush around their homes. A very scary position to be in.

and just to reiterate that smoke and ash can be hazerdous to health, this from the
Ventura County Air Pollution Control District or http://vcapcd.org/
Smoke Advisory for Northern and Western Ventura County
The smoke plume from the Zaca wildfire in Santa Barbara may bring smoke and particulates to our western and northern county areas.
The smoke plume is over the northern portion of Ventura County. Smoke and ash may also move over the western sections of our county during the evening and late night to morning hours. The possibility exists for smoke intrusion for the next several days - especially in the Ojai Valley and areas north.
If you smell smoke, take precautions to protect your health. People sensitive to smoke and particulates should limit time spent outdoors while smoke is in the air. People feeling ill should contact their Doctor or Health Care Provider.
If you have questions or concerns you can call Kent Field (VCAPCD) at (805) 662-6960.
