Stop The Trucks: Wreck Photos

An anonymous trucker got in touch with me a while back and said he had some photos of a gravel truck wreck on Highway 33 to share. He dropped them off, I scanned them in, and present them to you for your consideration.

Is this wreckage still there? If so, doesn't the gravel company have a duty to get it out of there?

Dana - not sure of where this is or even when this is. And I am not in touch with the person who provided the photos. But sure, this would be an environmental hazard. I would guess the responsibility actually lies with the trucking company, since my understanding is that they operate independently.

Regarding Stop The Trucks - I was on Hwy 33 today (Friday) at 10:15am driving from Mira Monte into Ojai. I was sandwiched between 2 green gravel trucks and there was another one on the opposite side of the street leaving the valley. Both of the trucks on my side of the street turned left at the "Y" intersection. Now how did there manage to be three trucks on the road at the same time going through the valley...it seems too many to me!

I had the same experience Thursday morning. I was coming in to town and the morning traffic was backed up at the light at 150. Among the cars, bumper to bumper, were three loaded gravel trucks.

My friend Joeseph and I drove up 33 today, to measure the width of the first tunnel - 24 feet. While driving back down, one of the piggy-back gravel trucks was coming up 33 and had a big tire on my side of the double yellow. There was a shoulder which I safely used to circumvent the behometh. This has happened before to me and appears to have become the accepted norm.

Please, everytime you spot a truck that is in any sort of violation, please feel out a violation form and send it to the chamber. This is crucial.

Ozena is ONLY allowed to run trucks from 6am to 7am and from 9am to 3pm, weekdays. Anything else is a permit violation that we need people to report.

Filling out a form only takes a minute, so please do it. Thank you.

Where does one get such a form? Where does one submit it?

The form can be obtained right here at the Ojai Post Truck Resource page and delivered by hand or mail to the Ojai Chamber Office on Signal Street:

or from the Ojai Valley News:

I regulary ride my bike up the 33 to Rose Valley and these photos are just frightening. I think that all of the studies that have been done haven't taken into consideration the impact to cyclists on this route. There are MANY cyclists that ride this route daily. One day I was riding up right before the tunnels and a two trucks were coming thru the tunnels (one each way). There was NO way a cyclist could even ride thru on the farthest right side and if they did, they would have been hit and probably killed. If cyclists were factored into the equation, Caltrans would easily see that it is a huge safety hazard to allow more trucks on this route. Maybe we could push this issue so that they include the potential safety hazards with cyclists on this route. I would venture to say that it would dramatically change the results of the safety hazards outlined in their survey.

Debi,

We need people like you to file complaint forms so the county takes our concerns seriously.

You can find one at:

hjs: Thanks for the suggestion. I will definitely fill out the complaint form. This is so important and serious for all of here in the Ojai Valley. Thanks!

I had a big yellow gravel truck in front of me keep dumping gravel as it went down 33 to Ventura.

1. I couldn't move- 1 lane highway
2. I now have MANY cracks in my windshield on my newer truck
3. I couldn't risk further damage by getting close to get a license #
4. There are no truck #'s, company affiliations, phone #'s or anything
5. In general they drive fast, are reckless, and boy there sure are a lot. Last I counted it was like one every 5 minutes on each side of the of 33.

I really hope & pray that we can do a signature log to bring suit against SB & Ventura Counties for the damage to our vehicles, way of life & roads. This is out of control.

You people all ignore the motorcycles using 33 for their own raceway, all the cars who cannot drive on their side of the road, all the empty beer cans and beer bottles on the side of the road, all THAT noise from the Harleys going thru downtown Ojai,Casitas Springs, Oakview, people who drive 50+ thru Oakview, 60+ in Upper Ojai, passinf on blind turns, double yellow lines that's all ok isn't it. By the wayHoward have you ever called the CHP or the sheriff about the drag racing and all the other noise from that popular spot by your house, maybe setting up a DUI check point on weekends? Didn't think so. You might read the letter in the OVN (8/22).

Well to all of you folks who really drive up the 33 on the weekends surely must have encountered the motorcycles racing up and down the hill. Again my sources relayed info to me that the CHP has again clocked on their radar 105 MPH + this past weekend coming down the hill!!!! The worst part of this true info is the motorcycle shop opening in the old Pine Mtn Inn who caters to these racers. If you haven't heard this is the new sport, it's called Canyon Cutting. Wait until you are passed by 3 or 4 on a blind turn with a car comming the opposite direction. Good luck to you. Travel up the 33 and you will see 20+ filling up at the 76 station across from Vons to race back up the hill. If you have not seen this you are not really going up there or you are blind.

Yesterday morning I took a brief drive up 33 from Ojai. As I pulled over at a turnout to turn around, three double gravel trucks careened past me in rapid order--one heading up and two down.

I wonder if a weight-sensitive traffic counter could be placed across the road to count the actual daily number of these trips.

you people sound like the biggest bunch of little crybabies...you should hear yourselves. Only in California.
