Sexism’s a Bitch

by evan austin March 27, 2007

(or, The Kids Are Alright)
The library at Nordhoff High School has changed very little in the nine years since i graduated, but this past friday, it actually saw something new: teenagers talking intelligently and purposefully about sexism.
Nordhoff has a new Social Justice Club, organized by twin sisters Sarafina and Darah…

What is Performance?

by Jason Womack March 27, 2007

(fyi: originally posted on my weblog…)
I am speaking and consulting more and more on an important topic:
“Perform at (your) 100%”
I believe this goes beyond business, life, sport, relationships and more…
The idea came to me accidentally, several years ago. In order to present a workshop for the senior management of a…

Dolphins

by Heather MacGumerait March 26, 2007

At the very bottom of a recent thread, I found a video of dolphin slaughter in Japan. Like most Californians, I’m pretty fond of our oceanic neighbors. Unlike lots of people, I’ve had the opportunity to swim with dolphins in the wild – I was in a little boat and…

Literacy in the US

by Heather MacGumerait March 26, 2007

From “The Week” March 30 2007, from the AP
“More than one-third of Washington, D.C.’s residents are functionally illiterate, says a new federal report. The district’s functional illiteracy rate is 36 percent, while the nation’s is 21 percent.”

Ojai Music

by Lisa Snider March 25, 2007

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Fred Schmitt, a prolific singer/songwriter and a musical genius, who lives right here in our little valley. He’s the real deal. He’s been writing music for 35 years and has traveled some million miles over 46 states playing to anyone who would listen.…

Are there solutions to gang violence?

by Kenley Neufeld March 25, 2007

Both Ojai and Santa Barbara were awakened by gang violence in the last month. Ojai had the drive-by shooting in the late afternoon and Santa Barbara had a fatal stabbing mid-afternoon at the corner of State and Carillo (a 14-year old stabbed a 15-year old). Here in Ojai, thirty-five residents…

The Ojai Post Poetry Center

by Suza Francina March 23, 2007

this moment
a bright sliver of the moon hangs over
the dark shadowy mountains of the
valley of the moon
i stand stone still
watching the first glimmers of dawn
the quarter moon so bright it
almost looks full
the valley below so silent
like the beginning of time
no busy minds…no cars…
only the soft soft hooting of the owl

Wired to Unite

by Kira Ryder March 22, 2007

It looks like we are wired to be loving caring nurturing beings, as long as it improves our chances of survival. In Tuesday’s Science Section of the NYT, Nicholas Wade published and article titled, “ Scientist Finds the Beginnings of Morality in Primate Behavior.” The piece presents the work and theories of…
