December Holydays
Christmas tends to take center-stage during the month of December (ok, let's be real: Christmas runs all over the stage singing and dancing while plenty of perfectly good celebrations fume in the shadowy sidestage).
But December is full of meaningful days spotlighting everything from disasters to civil rights. Here are some:
TODAY, DECEMBER 1 is World AIDS Day. Around FORTY MILLION people are still living with HIV throughout the world. Actions and information are everywhere, but you can start at here.
SUNDAY DECEMBER 3 is International Day of Disabled Persons, which is a UN-initiated day to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
THURSDAY DECEMBER 7 is Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Self-explanatory, although probably overshadowed by 9/11.
FRIDAY DECEMBER 8 is the 26th anniversary of John Lennon’s murder.
SUNDAY DECEMBER 10 is International Human Rights Day. Learn more here.
FRIDAY DECEMBER 15 is Bill of Rights Day. This holiday was established in 1941 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the document’s ratification, and is intended as a celebration of the civil rights guaranteed to all citizens. By Keith Olberman’s count, we have exactly ONE civil right left, so whoop it up!
SATURDAY DECEMBER 16-23 is Hanukkah!
SUNDAY DECEMBER 25 is Christmas Day!
MONDAY DECEMBER 26 –JANUARY 1 is Kwanzaa! This holiday was founded in 1966, and promotes the principles of Unity, Self-Determination, Collective Work and Responsibility, Cooperative Economics, Purpose, Creativity, and Faith. Learn more here.
SUNDAY DECEMBER 31 is Spirituality Day, an opportunity for all who value spirituality in their lives to connect and unite in our wish for a more peaceful, just and sustainable world based on values grounded in our deeper spiritual connection to each other and the world around us.
