Scariest Part of Halloween is the Child Labor Chocolate

Copied verbatim, but Organic Consumers said it so well.

The scariest thing about Halloween this year won't be the costumes... it's the chocolate. Almost half of the world's cocoa is being produced on West African plantations where, according to the UN's International Labor Organization, 284,000 child laborers "are either involved in hazardous work, unprotected, or have been trafficked." Say no to the chocolate industry's ghoulish links to child slavery by buying Fair Trade and organic chocolate.

Check out The Farmer and The Cook and Rainbow Bridge for Fair Trade chocolate. Check the label for certification.

We love the Chimpanzee Bar at the checkstand in Rainbow Bridge. It's lower in fat and 72% dark chocolate (high in anti-oxidants)- I'll have to check it for certification.

I believe all of the Endangered Species bars are Fair Trade, or, if not certified, using conscientious practices. The founder has an amazing story. He used to work on commercial fishing vessels. He was traumatized by the harvests, which haul in everything from the target fish to dolphins, sharks, small whales, giant turtles and, in the cases of dredging nets, most of the plant life from the sea floor. He was basically haunted by the vision of family members of trapped dolphins and whales following the fishing vessels and sounding - calling for their lost family members. He decided he needed to do something positive in the world and now we have delicious, fair trade chocolate donating a share of the profits to saving those very species!
