doublespeak at its best

apparently, black really IS white.

at least that's what you might be tempted to believe if you'd listened to President Bush's recent ABC interview with George Stephanopoulos, in which Bush tried to distance himself from his core "stay the course" strategy, which is both well-documented and retarded.

truly, there's no commentary necessary here. the transcript and assembled quotes speak for themselves:

THE CLAIM:
STEPHANOPOULOS: James Baker says that he’s looking for something between “cut and run” and “stay the course.”

BUSH: Well, hey, listen, we’ve never been “stay the course,” George. We have been — we will complete the mission, we will do our job, and help achieve the goal, but we’re constantly adjusting to tactics. Constantly.

watch it here.

THE TRUTH:

BUSH: We will stay the course. [8/30/06]

BUSH: We will stay the course, we will complete the job in Iraq. [8/4/05]

BUSH: We will stay the course until the job is done, Steve. And the temptation is to try to get the President or somebody to put a timetable on the definition of getting the job done. We’re just going to stay the course. [12/15/03]

BUSH: And my message today to those in Iraq is: We’ll stay the course. [4/13/04]

BUSH: And that’s why we’re going to stay the course in Iraq. And that’s why when we say something in Iraq, we’re going to do it. [4/16/04]

BUSH: And so we’ve got tough action in Iraq. But we will stay the course. [4/5/04]

can i comment on my own post, or is that like crossing the beams in Ghostbusters?

it occurs to me shortly after posting this that it might be highly tempting to forego constructive comments in favor of yet another Bush-bashing session. while i have no control over what's posted here by others (and in respect for my hope that what is posted is meeting the needs of the poster, at the very least), i would simply encourage a discussion with more depth and real-world application. whether that means "how do we get a million people to see this?" or "where's the next impeachment meeting?" remains to be seen.

so why did i post it in the first place? partly out of a pure joy that came from discovering that in spite of the past six years of Bush's presidency, i still retain the ability to be astonished, incredulous, and disgusted. and partly because a lie will circle the earth ten times while the truth is still putting on its shoes. Truth, dear friends, needs all the the help it can get.

Here, here!

evan - I embedded the video in your post - I was unable to embed it in a comment, but I felt it was important for people to see. Hope that wasn't presumptuous. Just an absolutely shocking piece of video. Had Enough?

not presumptuous at all, tyler...i'm very grateful for your ability to fill the gaps in my posting skills. it IS important to see and hear...reading alone is still shocking, but something is still lost.

Saw this today on Talking Points Memo...

Laura Bush, when asked on the Today Show (9/18/06) what she tells people when asked about Iraq: "Well, I say the--exactly what the president says, that we need to stay the course."

Double speak, indeed. Forked tongue, too. Thanks for this truth speak. Beating around the Bush to beat him at his game is a bit of Bush bashing with the sharp edge of wit. Ojai has its own version of truth bashing. I'm going to get the audio tape of the last council meeting, and transcribe the parts where Bury beats Bush for double speaking with a forked heart. It should be sweet and sour fun.
