Candidate Vision Statement: Steve Olsen

I'll be 71 in 2020 and will most likely still be living in Ojai since I have already spent 57 years here. I would hope that Ojai will have retained it's small town feel while slowly changing to make a better life for us. I would like to see more people using alternative transportation to reduce the use of cars. Our schools will be well kept and academically strong.

Our young people will have a variety of constructive activities and won't have any use for gangs. Our citizens will support our local businesses so that they are prosperous and successful. Our air quality has been improving as we have continued to fight and win battles that could affect our air quality. It was satisfying to stop the liquid gas terminal in the Santa Barbara Channel in 2012.

Housing for low and moderate income families has improved as the city as been purchasing existing housing stock and using a rental housing assistance program to keep these homes affordable.

My personal vision is to still be surfing in 2020.

Steve Olsen

Dear Steve,
How disillusional are you? You write about the future as if you think it's assured. No, Steve, your record has been a school system that is below average API with the state, a disfunctional Chaparral continuation school and no focus on the real problems of the city of Ojai. You've been a government employee your entire life and your school system is a failure by private sector terms.
BTW: the state of california will be beyond domestic supplies of clean burning natural gas very shortly. A PERFECT place for a terminal for LNG is 15 miles AND OVER THE HORIZON off the shore of Malibu. California needs this fuel for clean burning electrical power NO MATTER HOW MUCH ALTERNATE energy sources we properly develop. The terminal would be in the safest proposed location on the ENTIRE west coast.

so perhaps while you'r surfing out there.. you can ruminate what a vacuous and meaningless "vision" statement you posted waaay back in '06.
Trust me, if you win in '06 you will enjoy but one term. Promise.

Hey Leland - how about engaging in some constructive dialogue? I would assume you have some positive things to contribute, but its difficult to get past opening salvos like "How disillusional are you?"

By the way, the word you're looking for is delusional. "Disillusional" isn't even a word. Promise.

Yes, thank you Tyler. I'm surprised at some of the violence some people perpetrate against others on this post. Does little to unify our community.

You got me there Tyler.. I should have written: "delusional"
"Delusional" works equally as well.
As in: "Raymond is delusional": Critical words are not "violent" merely "critical". Violence is what Islamo-fascists do to demonstrate that they don't use violence to spread their beliefs that Christians and Jews are infidels and thus worthy of instant death. THAT'S violence, Raymond. Not critical words that are standard usage in the world of DEBATE. Tyler doesn't want debate rather soft words. I got news Tyler: Politcs IS a contact sport.
Part of this "touchy-feely" new age crap that some in the valley put forth is certainly open to both justifiable criticism and satrire; such as in: "birkenstock wearing, wheat-grass consumming, oak-hugging/climbing 'we're so enlightened' pretense and non-judgemental is the way to be". I'm ALWAYS willing to satirize and be critical of the no-cajones non-judgementalist who put multicultralism on a primacy level.
One should always have tolerance... but tolerance doesn't imply endorsement.
Tyler, apparently from my POV doesn't want "dialogue" but rather self-affirming liberal/leftist mush rhethoric to wrap himself in. Please worship your crystals with that unobtrusive New Age music wafting through the air as you contemplate your organic granola bar.
Now that I've discovered what's going on in this limp blog.. happy to no longer bother with it.
P.S.
Tyler, thanks SOOO MUCH for the word usuage tip. There ARE ocacassionl faux pas even with a Masters degree in screenwriting. You're right, ALWAYS best to use the spell check so as to avoid that sniping at my cuffs from such a toy poodle!

Dear Leland -

Regarding this: "Tyler doesn't want debate rather soft words. I got news Tyler: Politcs IS a contact sport."

When all you have is a hammer in your toolbelt, I guess everything looks like a nail, doesn't it Leland?

It's one thing to have a heated political debate, its quite another to make it personal, particularly in a community where the same people at which you hurl invective from behind a keyboard are the same ones you see at the market or in the restaurant every day.

Tell me, when we finally meet in person, are you going to continue your sterotyped insults and call me a "toy poodle" or are you going to be civil?

Let me quote one Leland Hammerschmitt, who a mere six months ago, was pleading for civil discourse:

"It is intellectually dishonest for you to presume what I think... join the debate, argue from points of logic not personal attacks." - Leland Hammerschmitt, Ventura County Star

Ah wiser words were never spoken, were they, Leland?

You say you'll no longer bother with The Ojai Post, but I doubt we have seen the last of Leland Hammerschmitt, Masters in Screenwriting.

I doubt it too Tyler.

Leland,
I enjoy reading your posts to this blog, but sometimes you are a bit abrasive to those of us who do enjoy your ramblings! You don't need spellcheck to get your point accccrosssse....We do get it!

Tyler,
Thanks for keeping it real.
Brad

Well stated Tyler. What a bummer that we've gone this far off track and gotten away from the fact that this is supposed to be in response to Steve Olsen's vision. I think it is a great vision and deserves a compliment... as do the other candidates. They've all put in a great effort. Good luck to you all! Let's keep in clean and let's not respond to Leland anymore... it's only a distraction.
