A heartfelt thanks to the citizens who turned out for
the July 10 historical meeting. The city
chambers were filled to overflowing with mostly
voices against the Mallory Street condo proposal. It
is important to the welfare of Ojai that these
projects are framed in the true light of what they do
not contribute to the small town charm of Ojai. Please
consider attending future council and planning
meetings, to participate in the process of decisions
being made at city hall.

I see Bury has decided not to run again.

Ojai City Council members voted Tuesday night to give
themselves a $400 per month raise, although it
won't take effect until after the November election.
The council's current salary is $75 per month, but
until this year, it was supplemented by $250 per month
to cover expenses. A new state law eliminated such
blanket expense payments, so in January, the total
monthly pay for each council member dropped from
$325 to $75.
The new salaries will be $475 per month. Council
members also can be reimbursed for specific
expenses
by providing receipts.
The council voted 4-1 in favor of the raise, with
Councilwoman Carol Smith dissenting. There was a brief but lively debate on the issue, and one audience
member was escorted out by police when he would
not surrender the podium.

Pete LaFollette, a regular at Ojai council
meetings
and often a vocal critic of city government, told
council members that if they were going to approve
the raise, they also should mend their "adversarial"
relationship with the public.

Mayor David Bury responded the council doesn't have an
adversarial relationship with anyone except LaFollette.

LaFollette then sat down, but he rose again a few minutes later and approached the podium. Bury told him
he had already had his chance to speak, and when
LaFollette began speaking again, Bury told Ventura
County Sheriff's Capt. Bruce Norris to escort him
out.

Norris said Wednesday that LaFollette was cited
for "disturbing a public meeting."
