Wagner Backs Off

Brett Wagner, who made an unsuccessful bid for Gallegly's seat in '04, had recently flapped his wings at Brooks Firestone in an attempt to recall the 3rd District Supervisor from his seat in Santa Barbara County. I ran into Wagner again yesterday in front of the County's Administration building in downtown Santa Barbara while he was quietly chatting with a newspaper reporter, and this is the account in today's Santa Barbara News Press. An excerpt follows:

The former candidate for Rep. Elton Gallegly's 24th District House seat submitted a petition earlier this year that launched a 120-day filing period in which supporters must collect at least 7,600 valid signatures to get the recall on the November ballot.

Mr. Wagner, who has clashed with regional Democratic Party chiefs, has touted himself as the recall's replacement candidate -- an unusual posture for a person attempting to remove an elected official from office.

While he says he would still run as a replacement candidate if other people succeed in getting the recall on the ballot, Mr. Wagner said he was dropping his role in the bid because he could not collect enough signatures to get the measure on the Nov. 7 ballot.

Mr. Wagner said he would focus on challenging Mr. Firestone when his term ends in 2008.

I wonder what he'll be up to in the meantime.

Brett's a really nice guy - maybe too nice for politics. He has not shown a tremendous amount of political acumen and now finds himself standing on the sidewalk watching the parade.

By the way, Lisa, I like your extended metaphors, from the Live Eagle Cam a few days ago to Brett "flapping his wings"... :)

:) You know, I've never really thought of him as a "nice guy" because the handful of times I've seen him live and in-person, he's always seething, spitting mad about something! Gotta go, I'm hearing the Colbert eagle screeching overhead!
