The Name Voyager

Check out the NameVoyager (JAVA required), to see how popular your name has been over the last 120 years or so.

You might not know that many Tyler's for instance, but you will! As a first name, Tyler was nearly non-existent until the sixties, when it ranked as the 446th most common boys name. In the seventies, its ranking increased to #202, and then up to #47 in the eighties, culminating in the nineties, when Tyler was the 9th most common boys name of the decade. In 2004, it was #16.

Compare that to John, which was the #1 most popular boys name from the 1880's through the 1910's, but has steadily declined in popularity, to a #15 ranking in the nineties. So you'll be seeing more Tyler's than John's in the coming years. Weird.

So check it out yourself, and leave any interesting observations in the comments. Sorry (or congratulations), Millennium and Demitri, you're not in the Top 1000 names.

Well, surprise, surprise, "Lisa," was numero uno in the 60's. I was born right around the time of Lisa Marie Presley ('68), so I guess that was the catalyst. In college, I once had a class with 6 other Lisa's. But, still, I'm glad my mom didn't name me Apple.
