Ojaians' DVD Rental Habits Uncovered

According to Netflix, these are currently the top 10 movies watched by Netflixers in Ojai:

1. Bee Season
2. Rabbit-Proof Fence
3. Nine Lives
4. The Best of Youth
5. Oliver Twist

6. Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story
7. Six Feet Under: Season 5 (5-Disc Series)
8. Ushpizin
9. Mrs. Henderson Presents
10. In Her Shoes

I haven’t seen any of these DVD's, but I can tell you that Netflix is making a lot of money on me. Hotel Rwanda has taken up residence on my coffee table for months, and I still haven’t watched it. I keep thinking I will wait for a quiet moment when my mind is ready for a heavy movie, but that moment has yet to present itself.

I did, however, manage to see nearly all of the Oscar contenders in the theater. Yes, I sat through chit-chatters, cell phone texters, popcorn chompers and crying babies just to find out what would become of Jack and Ennis, Truman and Johnny (Cash, that is). Nearly all of these movies transported me to another time, another place, another reality. Oh, until I had to shush the lady behind me who would belt out a guttural sigh every time Joaquin Phoenix's mug appeared on the screen. Yeah, I walked the line alright.

Have you seen any good movies lately?

Check out "Peace One Day" through Netflix. It is incredibly inspiring - how one person can make a huge difference in the world.

"This extraordinary documentary poses the question, Can one individual really make a difference? For filmmaker Jeremy Gilley, the answer is a resounding yes. For five years, Gilley tirelessly dedicated himself to persuading the United Nations -- and the world -- to officially sanction a global ceasefire day. This film charts Gilley's passionate journey -- and ultimate success in establishing Sept. 21 as the International Day of Peace."

Now THAT'S heavy. I'll have to add it to my queue. Right now I'm more in the "Napoleon Dynamite" mindset, though. Be honest, you loved it, too, didn't you?

Ha! I only saw the dance scene at the end. That was great. I guess I need to watch the whole darn thing, don't I?

oh, what a turn this thread has taken!

first: YES, watch every damn minute of Napoleon Dynamite. then watch it AGAIN.

second: Hotel Rwanda is worth waiting for. it's a great film, and one of the few that i've recently begun to classify as "violent with meaning", as opposed to "violent for the sake of violence". i'm encouraged to see that nothing in the top 10 (not that i've seen them all either) seem to be violent films. for more "violence with meaning", check out Crash and Munich. DO NOT watch Sin City. :)

Violent with meaning: City of God. Fantastic flick about the rise of the barrios in Rio de Janiero. Great piece of filmmaking, great acting, true story, the whole package.

OK, OK, I watched Napoleon Dynamite. And it was pretty great. Thanks for ruining my life. Freakin' idiots.

Vote for Pedro!
