Ode to Ojai Spring

This has to be my favorite time of year. It all starts with the time change. It’s like something inside me is awakened. I think it’s just me thawing out.

Finally the turtlenecks are banished to the back of the closet in favor of a soft faded tee. Loafers and sneakers are kicked off and newly liberated feet find comfort in a pair of flip flops. Oh, my, I need a pedicure. Maybe later.

I followed a humming bird around the yard the other day on her quest to find the sweetest nectar from the new white spathes of my calla lilies. The oak trees are sprouting their seeds and tiny green worms are hanging off the branches. I leave my flip flops on the path and wander onto the lawn. The blades tickle the soles of my naked feet. My toes wriggle in the squeaky green grass. Dance, little piggies, dance.

My dog follows my journey, turns her nose up to the sky and sniffs. I notice it, too. The air is perfumed by the valley’s orange blossoms. I make a mental note that it’s time for an early dinner on a picnic bench at Boccali’s. It will be too soon for tomato salad, but no matter, it’s where one goes to celebrate the arrival of spring.

I close my eyes and take a deep breath. It smells like Ojai. Another deep breath. My nose twitches and wrinkles up. Oh no. Ah, ah, ahhh-chooo! The dog jumps. The humming bird buzzes away. My eyes water and my throats gets scratchy while I brace for anoth…AHHHH-CHOOO!

I make another mental note to stop at Ojai Rexall on my way to Boccali’s!

What’s your favorite springtime pastime in Ojai?

Hiking, rockhopping, gardening...an iced coffee on the warmer days...enjoying the wondrous lushness and greenness of our hills and paths...having an extra big smile on my face that I share with my fellow residents...counting my blessings I can call Ojai home.
