Is Leaking Classified Information the Same As Gossiping?
I've been described as the Ojai gossip columnist. Not that I am, officially, anyway. There are quite a few who can be wear that crown. But I must confess, I do like gossip. Thus my obsesssion with the Valarie Plame leak investigation. I've followed this investigation as if it were a plot line straight out of Pine Valley. Imagine my surprise when haearing the news that it was none other than our fearless leader himself who had given the okay to spread classified information like malicious small town gossip - just to get back at that know-it-all neighbor.
To be fair, it appears that President Bush was unaware of Cheney using him. Or was he? For those of you who have been following this yarn you might recall that at the start of this investigation both Bush and Cheney were summoned to appear before Fitzgerald. They hired criminal attorneys and Bush refused to be questioned without Cheney being present. With this in mind I'm left only with that recurring question: How much did Bush know and when did he know it? This latest revelation is of no surprise. It brings it all back to the beginning. The new question is does this leave Bush and/or Cheney open to purgery charges? What did they say before the grand jury? Does it contradict previous statements they have made? Will this be the straw that breaks the camel's back? Who will ultimately be held accountable?
I've always felt that this story is far more important than it's been given credit. Neither Wilson nor his wife have been in the public eye as much as in the beginning. When I last saw Wilson being interviewed on the subject he eluded to the fact that death threats have been made against his family. Plame's career was abruptly ended. The damage done is as unknown as how much secret service was given by Ms. Plame, whose job involved stopping the spread of weapons of mass destruction. It seems that gossipmongering and warmongering run in the same circles. What's at stake is our national security. It raises another issue. If someone can be put to death for not saying something that could possibly have prevented deaths on 911, what's the penalty for someone who knowingly allowed classified information to be released putting undercover agents in the field at risk and possibly even resulted in the deaths of countless people. Just like All My Children, you'll have to stay tuned.

You can't start impeachment hearings if you don't control the House. So if people want this administration to be held accountable, then they have vote in the party that is willing to do their job: oversight of the executive branch. By the way, I think the word you want to use is "heuvos".
