What IS Wagner Up To?

I was walking up to the stairs to Santa Barbara County's Administration Building yesterday after lunch, where my office is, when a blaring microphone stopped me in my tracks. There was Brett Wagner, holding court with 4 people and a camera, hollering into a mic, which further amplified his sermon, just in case one of the 4 had gone deaf I guess.

Anyway, holding my finger in one ear, I ascertained that Wagner has now decided not to make a run at Gallegly again, but instead, go after a County seat in Santa Barbara County, precisely the 3rd District, in an attempt to recall Supervisor Brooks Firestone, who has been in office for just over a year. I was unclear exactly why, so I just read the Santa Barbara News Press' account, and I'm still a little cloudy on the matter.

Okay, so maybe I'm not that astute, but nonetheless I'm left with a feeling of disappointment aimed at Mr. Wagner. I had really high hopes for him in '04 (I had really high hopes in general in '04, but let's not go there). I wasn't excited about how he was running his campaign, but I voted for him because I liked his platform (well I liked it more than Gallegly's). And with the recent news that the Democratic leadership has been questioning his record, I can't help but wonder if he is now just grabbing at straws.

So just what IS Wagner up to?

Hi Lisa - I agree the switch in focus is unexpected and a bit odd. Regarding the questioning of his record, this is what happens in politics: you can smear your opponent without any truth to the allegations, but they linger and stick. See McCain 2000, GOP primary, as an example. I posted a few days ago on OjaiBlog regarding an investigation that found the allegations unfounded and that the people who spoke did so without the authority of the Democratic Party.

True dat, but the big question still lingers, what's he doing?
