Markers for the Blind on Ojai Trail

Great article in the Star (registration required) yesterday about a student at Villanova Prep whose Boy Scout Eagle Project led him to create an opportunity for the blind to use the Ojai Trail more safely. I'm not a big fan of the scouting organization, but certainly what Jake Garrett did for friend, Diane Vlasoff and others is tremendous.

Here is an excerpt:

For more than a year he met with government officials, filing petitions and seeking ways to raise money for the project. Blind Signs Inc. cut the price of the system in half, and the Lion's Club of Ojai covered the rest of the cost.

It cost $900 to install 16 markers at three intersections.

In late January, Jake and fellow members of Scout Troop 504 installed the markers at the path crossings at Montgomery Street, Loma Drive, and the intersection of Highways 33 and 150.

The system is in place and is working.

"The blind signs give me an added sense of security, since I do not need to rely solely on my dog, but I can rely on myself, as well," Vlasoff said.

There are some good kids raised here in Ojai! I recently donated a few dollars to Claire Wade, a student who was raising funds to participate in a philanthropic excursion to India. I received the nicest thank you note from her, including a thank-you haiku. Makes me proud to help out Generation O (for Ojai :)
